List a SPECIFIC source(s) after your answer for each question, EXCEPT question #12. If you use an online source, provide the EXACT website URL for the page where you found your information. If you use a printed source (like a book or a pamphlet) you must list this source using APA style. This assignment is DUE ON WEDNESDAY, 11/06/14 by 23:55. This assignment is worth 100 pts.

Remember that each question EXCEPT QUESTION 12 must have at least one source listed. Some questions will, of course, have the same source.

The internship exploration should be a typed document with the following format:
Questions ending in ? or … should be answered in a few sentences.
Questions ending in : can be answered in a few words or as a bulleted list.

1. (6 pts) What key factors are important to you for selecting an internship? (for example: salary, duration, reputation, location close to significant others, specialization, etc.)
For me, I want to be close to home, so probably near Chicago, but I am willing to go out to somewhere completely new. Also, an internship focusing on finance or trading is ideal, but I still want to do an internship. For duration wise, hopefully over the summer, thus I can gain more experience and do more.

2. (6 pts) Identify three specific resources you could use to gather information about potential internships: • I-Link https://i-link-illinois-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?s=home • Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/ • Indeed.com http://www.indeed.com/

3. (6 pts) Are there ways to specialize within your field? Discuss which area(s) of specialization are you considering presently and how this might dictate your choice of internship?
There are some ways to specialize in my field. For instance, this field usually requires a master or bachelor’s degree, extreme complex problem solving, and a lot of math. Because of this, I would definitely want an internship where there is a lot of decision making and high stress situations since it will exemplify to companies that I have this skill. http://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/11-9199.03 4. (6 pts) List the top ranked employers/companies in this field: • Barclays PLC • JPMorgan Chase • Citigroup Inc • Goldman Sachs Group Inc • Bank of America Merrill Lynch http://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/010715/worlds-top-10-trading-companies.asp

5. Research two possible internship opportunities that interest you and record the following information:
There are two possible internships that I look forward too. First one is the Future Leaders InTernship Experience. https://i-link-illinois-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?mode=form&id=f50f8b070a854af2ac30f552f74cbae9&s=jobs&ss=jobs

Next one would be KPMG LLP. https://i-link-illinois-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?mode=form&id=b1b0d54b0c52602ff693fe6c86939418&s=jobs&ss=jobs

a. (8 pts) Record information about application requirements, particularly regarding prerequisite coursework, previous internship experiences, required certifications, and letters of recommendation:
Future Leaders InTernship Experience – There are almost no requirements, but simply being an undergraduate student. They are willing to show you potential jobs for you to choose.
KPMG LLP – One must be a business student and must be graduating in 2016 or 2018. Also, one must make a cover letter, and send an unofficial transcript to them.

b. (8 pts) How long would it take you to complete this internship? How long would it probably take you to obtain an entry level job in your field if you were hired for this internship? (e.g. does this internship lead directly to a job, or would you have to apply elsewhere?)
Future Leader InTernship Experience – This internship does not give part straight to a job, but it gives one a better opportunity to gain the same internship again next time. Overall, it is a summer, semester, or a part time internship which allows for great flexibility.

KPMG LLP – This is a summer, semester, or part time internship which is great as it is flexible like the other internship. There are no way to gain an entry level job from this internship, and must apply to a different company.

c. (8 pts) Briefly describe the benefits you would receive as an intern, including salary, health insurance, vacation leave, sick leave, etc. Would you need to obtain loans to pursue this opportunity? Would you need to start paying any student loans you might have while still an intern?
Future Leaders InTernship Experience – There are actually many benefits. The salary is $18.27 an hour plus free housing for internships that are more than fifty miles away. There are also paid days for being sick and vacation leave. There are no loans to pay at all.

KPMG LLP – This is a paid internship, but it does not state how much. Also, there are no other fees, thus it is better. One does not need a loan at all.

d. (8 pts) If you were to decide to apply to this internship, what would your timeline need to be in order to adequately prepare for the application process? Include information like application due dates, prep classes for certifications, and estimated interview dates.
Future Leaders InTernship Experience – The application process will be accepted until March 31. There is an interview process which will be given to you if you are accepted as a candidate.
KPMG LLP – Application will be accepted until March 3rd, but in order for someone to truly apply to the position is by KPMG’s website. Also, one must only apply to one position. Also, one requirement is to have some marketing background which would mean I would have to do a class on marketing or read a book about it.

6. (6 pts) Are there courses you could take during your undergraduate training that might increase your chances for obtaining an internship in your field? Similarly, are there extracurricular activities (e.g., volunteer service, leadership roles, student organizations, etc.) that you have sought out or could seek to maximize your chances?
KPMG LLP – Yes, there are some things one can do. For one thing, one can have some kind of financial background going into it. They are also searching for someone who is actively involved in their college, thus being a part of many clubs will greatly aid one’s chances. https://i-link-illinois-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?mode=form&id=b1b0d54b0c52602ff693fe6c86939418&s=jobs&ss=jobs

Future Leaders InTernship Experience – There are actually no other course that would help your chances, but showing that you are a leader in your community is helpful. This company actually simply wants beginners who may or not know what they want to do. https://i-link-illinois-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?mode=form&id=f50f8b070a854af2ac30f552f74cbae9&s=jobs&ss=jobs 7. Bachelor’s Degree Business Administration http://www.online.uillinois.edu/catalog/OnlineDegrees.asp?DegreeType=1

8. (6 pts) In your future occupation, list what you would need to obtain licensure and/or sit for a professional exam: (for example, psychologists apply for licensure after 2 years of supervised practice, lawyers sit for the BAR exam after law school before they can practice, accountants sit for the CPA, doctors have to pass several steps of the Medical Boards, etc.)
A lot of traders actually need a bachelor’s degree either in business, finance, accounting, or economics. Many need special licenses, but it varies with what exactly you want to do. Though, for me, I am looking to get my Series 7 license which allows me to sell all types of securities but not commodities or futures. http://myfootpath.com/careers/business-careers/trader-careers/ http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/series7.asp

9. (6 pts) What types of positions will be open to you after you complete an internship in your field? How might these opportunities differ from those you can pursue without an internship? Does your earning potential increase with an internship in your field?
If I continue to go back to my internship, Future Leaders InTernship experience, there is a 3% increase in pay. On the description, the company actually wants someone who has a strong interest in working for them, thus having this internship will greatly help in acquiring this job. People without internships are truly at a great disadvantage. https://i-link-illinois-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?mode=form&id=f50f8b070a854af2ac30f552f74cbae9&s=jobs&ss=jobs 10. (6 pts)What personal challenges or obstacles do you anticipate having to surmount if you pursue an internship in your field?
For sure, many of these internships might be further away from home, thus I must live by myself or possibly a roommate. Being away from home over summer after being in college for a while is a bit saddening, but it is worth it. Also, the work hours and actually doing real work might be very challenging to me who has no true experience in the business world. To be honest, I feel as if I would be very nervous going into these internships with a lot stress because I want to look good to these people and hopefully get more than experience out of it. Plus, the list of jobs to do is a bit frightening. Lastly, many of them say that the company can fire you at anytime which is not very appealing and worrying. https://i-link-illinois-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?mode=form&id=f50f8b070a854af2ac30f552f74cbae9&s=jobs&ss=jobs 11. (6 pts) Identify key people with whom it would be helpful for your career to network with while at the university: (Try to name some specific people (, like graduate students, professors whom you could develop professional relationships with, etc.)
Definitely Mrs. Dino who is a head of the business career service is a person that I definitely look forward to build a relationship. She can for sure make me look better and inform me of companies coming. Also, my cousin Elliot Kim who is currently a graduate student at UIUC is another individual that I can network with. He is experienced, and has had amazing internships. https://www.linkedin.com/in/megandino 12. (8 pts) Having completed this assignment, briefly describe your feelings and thoughts regarding applying for an internship. What information might you still need to gather to make an informed decision about whether an internship is necessary or helpful for you?
I definitely want to do an internship no matter what it is even if it’s not necessary close to my major. Applying seems very easy, but I am still afraid of the interview process that it contains. There is no information I need to figure out if an internship is necessary because no one can go wrong with an internship. By doing this, it has motivated me to find one.
