Making the project the past couple weeks really involved a lot more self-reflection than I initially anticipated. It took a couple of hours to come up with three core values that I truly felt defined me. After finding those values, trying to discover where exactly I learned each one presented its own task as well. I noticed that we have grown up and we very much consider ourselves individuals. We like to think that we are all made uniquely and that being ourselves is a good thing socially because it provides diversity. This term project showed me that I am not as much of a unique individual as I believed. I kept observing my progress and seeing that I am merely a reflection of the important people in my life. If my parents were people who boasted and bragged, I probably wouldn’t value humility so much. If I had never experienced hardships concerning my family’s economic status, I might not have ever developed the sense of compassion that I possess today. I didn’t come out of the womb as some extremely different kid because my environment made me that way. Realizing all of these things made me appreciate the work of Geoffrey Canada that much more. Even though he’s helping out young people in Harlem, New York, I am very grateful for his overall awareness. He has done everything he can to change what those kids are reflected off of. The program that teaches young parents various things about raising a child is crucial. Because of his ability to see the services that will reflect positively on the children, Canada has experienced a great deal of success. The three values that I think are important are humility, compassion, and honesty. I think Geoffrey Canada embodies every single one. After all of the stories written about him and his impact on those children, Canada could easily become full of himself and think his job is done. His humility and compassion allow him to maintain a leveled head while also connecting to those who need his help the most. I believe he is very honest in his assessment of those that need assistance and this allows him to actually see improvements. Many people give back but they don’t see the true issues outside of the ones on the surface. During our discussions, was there any value that a peer brought up that caught you completely off guard? Do you think a guy like Geoffrey Canada could actually be hired by hired by our government to find away to improve all the education and poverty issues nationwide?
