Filled With The Spirit In Ephesians 5: 18

While the Bible teaches us to be filled with the Spirit in Ephesians 5:18, we read in our textbook “The key to life in the Spirit…is to spend much more time in thanksgiving and praise for what God has done- and is doing and promises to do” (Fee, 2011). The history of Christianity can be confusing and there can be much controversy surrounding this matter and what it really means to be filled with the Spirit. “When it comes to our practices and behavior, we need to avoid making rules and laws, and trust the leading of the Spirit” (Smith, 2010). The historical Orthodox Church believes that the Person of the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity and comes to live inside us through our trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. I believe through this class I have become much more aware that it is not up to a few individuals to tell you what they think God wants to do with your life. We read in our text, “One of the fads among evangelicals in the final decades of the twentieth century has been that of finding your spiritual gift” (Fee, 2011). We need not put limitations on God, I have heard it before as saying putting God in a box. When we hear of the gifts of the Spirit, we tend to think of Paul speaking to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians chapter 12 through 14. We do read in Chapter 14 some interesting advice that is what has really made me think a great deal about the gift of tongues. 1 Corinthians 14:4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church (NLT). 14:6 Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? Fee (2011) explains, “Paul does not damn tongues with faint praise, as some have argued, nor does he stand in awe of the gift, as the Corinthians had apparently done” (pg. 169). I enjoyed coming to the realization or revelation that what Paul was trying to do was warning the Corinthians about their misuse of the gifts. I agree with Paul on the idea of the gift of …show more content…
We can experience in this day and age things that appear to be holy but are not. A genuine experience involving the Holy Spirit will reveal Jesus Christ and help us become more like our Lord. The Holy Spirit otherwise known as “Paraclete” which is a Greek word that means “called to one’s side” (Gaultiere, n.d.). We know from scripture that the Holy Spirit is to be many things, they include but are not limited to; Helper, Advocate, Counselor, Comforter, Friend, and Strengthener. For the mystery will continue on throughout the generations however, “The reason for the gifts in the assembly is to build us up as we live out the life of the future in the present age” (Fee, 2011). We also need to be mindful that the gifts of the Spirit will be used to keep fellow believers in unity and not division. It is also a warning that we do not judge others based on the gifts of the Spirit that they do or do not possess. Our focus should remain on the one who gives and provides for us

The Holy Spirit

...The Holy Spirit “…Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” Ephesians 1:13 (see also 4:30; 2 Cor 1:22) When Jesus went back to His father, He did not abandon us as spiritual orphans in the world. He sent us his Holy Spirit into our lives. The Holy Spirit is the personal presence of God. “…I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.. I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you…” John 14:16-18;16:5-7 (read Acts 2:1-4). The Holy Spirit is one of the three Persons of the Godhead (Matthew 28:19). That means that although the Holy Spirit is distinct from the Father and the Son, He is indeed God (note Peter’s words in Acts 5:3-4 and John’s description of Jesus in John 1:1-2). All three Persons are actively involved in the process of salvation, as shown in the scripture: “For through [Jesus] we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” Ephesians 2:18 THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT “We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.” 1 John 4:13 The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to every believer. When a person personally receives Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, the Holy Spirit comes to live on the inside, imparting spiritual life. “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized...

Glossolalia or No Glosssolalia

...INTRODUCTION Church history has been filled with heated debates about speaking in tongues. This modern movement has been one of the most intriguing and apprehensive trends of the contemporary charismatic movement. Glossolalia (speaking in tongues) has been responsible for numerous divisions among Christians because advocates who observe and practice speaking in tongues take the matter seriously. The gap in this division is wide, ranging from accusations of mental instability and personal impairment to direct and holy communication with God. It is the purpose of this paper to show that biblical evidence demonstrates that glossolalia is irrelevant for today. We will first introduce a working definition of glossolalia, then look at some important historical facts revealed in Acts, the gospel of Mark, and 1 Corinthians, consider supporting arguments from each side of the debate, and finally conclude with a position that is supported by thoughts from informed theologians and more importantly, the Holy Bible (God’s word). DEFINITION Glossolalia is derived from the Greek noun glossa which is interpreted as “the tongue, a language,” and the verb laleo which is interpreted as “to speak”. Therefore, glossolalia is a literal translation of the Greek words “glosso” and “laleo” meaning “speaking in tongues”. Oxford Dictionary defines glossolalia as a phenomenon of (apparently) speaking in an unknown language, especially in religious worship. The most common usage for the phenomenon...

...convictions regarding the theological truths of the Bible, built on years of study and teaching. They are the primary doctrines of the Christian faith, and they reflect the heart of the teaching of Grace to You. John MacArthur  ------------------------------------------------- The Holy Scriptures We teach that the Bible is God's written revelation to man, and thus the sixty six books of the Bible given to us by the Holy Spirit constitute the plenary (inspired equally in all parts) Word of God (1 Corinthians 2:7-14; 2 Peter 1:20-21). We teach that the Word of God is an objective, propositional revelation (1 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Corinthians 2:13), verbally inspired in every word (2 Timothy 3:16), absolutely inerrant in the original documents, infallible, and God-breathed. We teach the literal, grammatical-historical interpretation of Scripture which affirms the belief that the opening chapters of Genesis present creation in six literal days (Genesis 1:31; Exodus 31:17). We teach that the Bible constitutes the only infallible rule of faith and practice (Matthew 5:18; 24:35; John 10:35; 16:12-13;17:17; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:20-21). ...Bermudez 1 SPC Bermudez, Joshua CH (MAJ) Johnson, Jerry PHIL 127- Living Religions of our World 5 October 2013 Pentecostalism Pentecostalism is a Christian denomination or movement that places special emphasis on achieving a direct or personal experience with God through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I was born and raised as a Pentecostal myself so I will not only be talking about the history, beliefs, and background of the Pentecostal movement, but also about personal experiences gained through my faith in God. There are four fundamental beliefs of Pentecostalism: Jesus saves according to John 3:16; baptizes with the Holy Spirit according to Acts 2:4; heals bodily according to James 5:15; and is coming again to receive those who are saved according to 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17. Those four fundamental beliefs will be talked thoroughly about further on. It is said that Pentecostalism is believed to have been emerged from late 19th century radical evangelical revival movements in America and Great Britain. There was no one founder of the Pentecostal Movement; instead, isolated Christian groups were experiencing phenomenal experiences such as divine healing and speaking in tongues. These are what according to the Bible are called gifts of the spirit. The spiritual gifts are found in the Bible in Romans, 1 Corinthians, and Ephesians. Pentecostals believe that Bermudez 2 spiritual gifts continue to operate within the church today. Pentecostals...

Adultery, fornication and other forms of sexual immorality have been in the news a lot lately. The military in particular is undergoing a top-to-bottom review of its sexual policies because of various misdeeds of its officers and troops. From the lowest to the highest offices in the land, marital infidelity and sexual improprieties are the buzzwords. Tabloids scream the latest "love triangle" discovered. Magazines contest each other to picture the cover girl with the least covering. Headlines tease readers with articles about sex. Within their pages sex sins of every stripe come out of the closet. Whether its movies, the Internet, bars, parties, homosexual activities, parades or whatever, sex is the vehicle that attracts interest. It has even encroached into children's cartoons, books, magazines and videos! "Living in sin" is now par for the course. People refer, not to husbands or wives, but to "significant others." They speak of "satellite relationships" rather than affairs. Perversions have been downgraded to "personal sexual expressions." What was once shameful is now acceptable. Why is sex promoted so extensively? Because sin is pleasurable, and sex sins are particularly so. Moses chose to forego the "passing pleasures of sin" (Hebrews 11:25) for a greater ultimate...

The Chinese church is educated, affluent and filled with talent.1 As Two-Third World missions come into prominence in mission circles, the church in the West is looking to the Chinese church to "pick up the baton" and carry out the Great Commission across cultural barriers. Yet with all seven hundred congregations the Chinese church is reaching only five percent of the Chinese community with the gospel.2 She is a small minority. And although endowed with a rich tradition of spirituality and evangelistic zeal, she is weak in two crucial areas: doctrinal maturity 3 and church consciousness.4 She is a young church. Jesus calls the church to disciple the nations (Matthew 28:19-20). Jesus calls us to seek His Kingdom and righteousness in all that we do (Matthew 6:33). Paul tells us that if any human being is in Christ, everything – including his or her whole life -- is made new. The individual is new, or more precisely, there is a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), a new world. This means that the Lordship of Christ includes His lordship over our work, our careers, our families, and our ambitions. We are to live as living demonstrations that Jesus is the answer. If Jesus is the answer, what are the questions? 5 In every culture and in every generation human beings ask different questions about life and the universe. A Love Story

...but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. God’s love never fails.   Now, why is this all so important? Well, it’s because our understanding and experience of God’s love plays a huge part in our love, acceptance, and relationships with other people. For we tend to treat others as we think God treats us. So understanding God’s love for you is not an end in and of itself. The end is that you may share that love with others. Paul tells us what he was trying to achieve through his teaching in 1 Tim 1:5 ‘But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart.’ But how does this come about? We love, John tells us, because He loved us first. (1 John 4:19) And it can also be said that we tend to love in proportion to the love we have experienced from God. So while these points are probably not new, allow God to speak them to your heart once again.   God’s love acts!   Rom 5:8 ‘But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’   The first thing that should be noted is that God’s love acts. And not only that but it acts unconditionally. It was when we had nothing to offer, while we were still sinners, that Christ died for us. It is not just some lovey-dovey, wishy-washy empty talk or promise. It acts! It was God’s love for the entire world that caused Him to give up His only Son as a...

Various Kinds of Prayers

...Various Kinds of Prayer Cheryl Riley Maters II Theology May 9, 2015 Dr. Patricia Yeargan Various Kinds of Prayer Throughout my journey as a Christian I have found prayer to be a relevant part of my life. It is and essential instrument that all Christians can use on a daily basis. Prayer is defined as communication with God as our source of help just as you can use different instruments to make different sounds. Diverse prayers can yield different results. The Bible tells us in Thessalonians 5:16 “to pray without ceasing,” As we pray it opens up communication with our father God and strengthens our faith. As Christians we must pray to strengthen our relationship with him not because times are hard or that we are in need of something. Dr. R.T Kendall topic on the Various Kinds of Prayer enlightens people on the vast areas of praying. For instance the prayer of agreement can be used with intercessory prayer with great results. It also gives us insight to the power of prayer. Our heavenly Father values us more than anyone and wants to talk to us. With prayer, we all have equal access and we are all on level ground. What's more, prayer gives you the privilege of access to ultimate power. God can make anything happen. He can heal, solve any problem and change your financial situation and open doors. Christ Love

...How deep are your Roots in Christ Love. Introduction Be rooted, grounded and established in the word of God is our theme for the church. Since the beginning of the year, as a church we have taken time to understand what it means to be rooted, grounded and enlightened in the word of God. The women ministry/Joy fellowship have also derived their theme for their celebration week to go deeper into the theme and take time to examine ourselves how deep are our roots in Christ Love based on Ephesians 3: 17. Paul was praying for the church of Ephesus, that Christ may dwell in their hearts and that they may be rooted in Christ Love. He also prayed for them further, (Vs 18-19) that they may be able to comprehend the depth, the width of Christ love which passes knowledge, and after they comprehend this love they will be filled with fullness of God. As we endeavor to be rooted, grounded and enlightened by the word of God, one of the roots that we ought to develop and let it grow deeper is the root of love. What does it mean to be rooted in Christ Love? To be rooted in Christ Love means that we are established in the Love of Christ. Christ Love make us complete, the foundation of Christianity is based on what Christ did for us on the cross. Unless we have a clear picture of depth, width, length, and height of the kind of Love that Christ had for mankind then we can never understand what love is. After we have comprehended Christ love for mankind, then we can be able to apply...
