DQ 1 1) Would a traditional income statement differ depending on whether the business is a service organization, merchandiser, or manufacturer?

2) The answer to this question would be yes and no. I choose to answer this way because regardless to what is a service organization, merchandiser, or manufacturer the purpose of the traditional income statement is to determine the net income. The only thing that differs is the way the sections are labeled.

Are raw materials, labor, and overhead direct or indirect costs? How do we determine the behavior of these types of costs?

When determining if a cost is direct or indirect we must determine if the cost is physically connected to a product. Therefore, raw materials, and labor will be considered direct cost, because they are used to make or produce the final product. Overhead will be considered an indirect cost, because it includes expenses needed to produce the product but no physical attachment. This will include: facilities, utilities, administrative, and etc…

DQ 2
Go to page 130, Case 3-30, Ethics and the Manager. Let’s discuss the questions, make value-added comments, points, and share personal experiences of unethical situations.
When we discuss ethics, the conversation leads to the acts of management to make the "best" decision for the organization. Unfortunately, this has not been the case in the past. Therefore, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (Act) was enacted in 2002. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act requires that a company develop sound principles of internal control over financial reporting and continually verify that these controls are working. The act specifically requires top management to attest that the company’s internal controls are reliable and effective.

Do you feel that the Act truly holds managers accountable for their unethical behavior?

Yes, I feel the Act holds managers accountable for their unethical behavior. The Act states managers are responsible to insure internal control is administered within the company. Therefore, managers will suffer the consequence if any unethical practices occur within the company.
Should Cristin Madsen go along with the general manager's request to reduce the direct labor-hours in the predetermined overhead rate computation to 105,000 direct labor-hours?
If Cristin Madsen goes along with the general manager’s request to reduce the direct labor hours in the predetermined overhead rate to 105,000 that will be unethical. The reduction will increase the cost of goods sold, making it look as if the company’s profit increased and generating a bonus for management. The ethical thing for Cristin to do is report the direct labor hours at 110,000 as determined in her analysis. This will give the company an accurate overhead rate and helps the company determine goals in production.

Galaxias Fasciatus: Ecology and Conservation Implications

...Galaxias fasciatus: Ecology and Conservation Implications The Galaxiidae (Order: Osmeriformes) are a family of freshwater fish generally found in the cool-watered temperate latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere (McDowall, 2000). Galaxiidae derives its name from the comparison of the galaxy with the typical profusion of shiny flecks in the colouration of its members (Alibone, David, Hitchmough, Jellyman, Ling, Ravenscroft & Waters, 2010). Within New Zealand there are two genera of galaxiid, Neochanna, containing five species of mudfish, and Galaxias which contains twenty diverse fish species (McDowall, 2000). There is a high rate of endemism within these New Zealand genera. Only two of these species are found in other Southern Hemisphere countries (G. brevipinnis and G. maculatus) (Alibone et al, 2010). The banded kokopu, G. fasciatus, is an endemic species of galaxiid fish found throughout New Zealand and its offshore islands. However, populations appear to be sparse south of East Cape on the North Island and the east coast of the South Island (Department of Conservation, 2005). Banded kokopu occur primarily in coastal streams, rivers and lakes, but can also penetrate 180 kilometres inland through waterways in lowland areas no more 550 metres above sea level (McDowall, 2000). G. fasciatus is not considered to be a threatened species because they remain relatively widespread in distribution. However, range and abundance in several areas has declined due to habitat...

Technology

...oday's technology is already producing a marked shift in the way we think and behave, particularly among the young. I mustn't, however, be too censorious, because what I'm talking about is pleasure. For some, pleasure means wine, women and song; for others, more recently, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll; and for millions today, endless hours at the computer console. But whatever your particular variety of pleasure (and energetic sport needs to be added to the list), it's long been accepted that 'pure' pleasure - that is to say, activity during which you truly "let yourself go" - was part of the diverse portfolio of normal human life. Until now, that is. Now, coinciding with the moment when technology and pharmaceutical companies are finding ever more ways to have a direct influence on the human brain, pleasure is becoming the sole be-all and end-all of many lives, especially among the young. We could be raising a hedonistic generation who live only in the thrill of the computer-generated moment, and are in distinct danger of detaching themselves from what the rest of us would consider the real world. This is a trend that worries me profoundly. For as any alcoholic or drug addict will tell you, nobody can be trapped in the moment of pleasure forever. Sooner or later, you have to come down. I'm certainly not saying all video games are addictive (as yet, there is not enough research to back that up), and I genuinely welcome the new generation of "brain-training" computer...
