The Effects of Music Videos on Kids It is a fact that music and visual pictures affect Kids. At Day Care they use music and pictures to teach kids, singing ABC’ s for instance. They also use pictures to teach kids animals, truck, cars, etc. You can even go back to biblical times, David played a harp to calm a vicious animal. Studies have shown that certain love songs help dolphins mate, has a slow sweet love song ever put you in the mood. So in my opinion I believe it is hard to dispute that music has some effect on all people, but in a youth that is still developing their values and morals I believe it has a lot of effect. So imagine combining both music and pictures , you get music videos. It is hard to pin point why students are in elementary, middle school, and high school grades dropping plus a higher dropout rates are higher . Plus kids are getting STD,s and pregnant at an earlier age. But look at all the sex and sexual things that are in music videos. This kids look up at these artist as role models, but the artist take on none of the responsibility . Just as the kids at day care song songs of ABC, s now it’s about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. The extensive watching of videos has greatly affected the demeanor of dressing in female and male teens. I believe strongly that the sex in music videos is one of the main reasons grades and the youth values on sex have changed. ( Lopez., 2007)

Another horrible vision that the music videos depict is the use of drugs and not just light drugs but heavy ones. In the genre of hip hop if you look at the videos you will probably notice either a baby bottle or a Styrofoam cup. Both represent hip hop artist drinking cough syrup call Tussionex or Promethazine. These are extremely addictive and get you high for days. I have friends that drunk these narcotics in the mid 90’s it was underground and few knew of these syrups got you high ,now thanks to music videos all the little kids know about syrup, they even drink over the counter syrups to get high. The rappers think it’s cool to hold up baby bottles full of syrup in music videos, but they are young and immature their selves, so they don’t know or some don’t even care how it affects the youth that looks up to them. If you were to go to middle school or high school and look at how students dress you would see their dress code is similar to what the artist in their favorite music video wears. The kids that are underage drinking are drinking what their favorite artist is drinking. In fact Courvoisier was losing money until a famous artist Busta Rhymes made a hit song “Pass the Courvoisier “. If companies hire artist to market their products and sign artist to multimillion dollar contracts isn’t that proof that these artist voice has influence on the youth, and if their voice has influence how can the visuals in the music videos not have influence on our kids. A company like Hewlett Packard, Pepsi, Hennessy, Ciroc, the list goes on and on. These are billion dollar companies with million dollar marketing teams that make these decisions. So who do I blame for these music videos exposing our kids to sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll? There are many to blame, adult viewers, artist, record companies and television networks. We always hear sex sells, so they are selling it through music videos. The artist are probably the least at fault because the record companies tell the artist what to wear, how to act, and who to date, it’s all a show. The parents have protested some of these videos, but it looks like the fight has been won by the big money record companies. I think it boils down to who really cares. I think that they all care about making money, and that’s the bottom line. American adolescents demonstrated that listening to music and watching television and music videos more frequently was associated with increased risky behaviors. ("American Academy of," 2009) More than 150,000 arrests of adolescents for violent crimes occur each year. Hundreds of studies have linked exposure to media violence to violent real-life behavior in adolescents. (Cromie, 1998)
