Understanding Fitness and Wellness
Professor Katherine Cabai
26 May 2013

Every day the fitness world is becoming larger and larger. Everyone is trying to work towards having that “perfect body”. With that in mind, there are some important aspects an individual must understand about fitness and wellness in order to achieve their goals. Usually the best place to start is with themselves, by having figuring out their current fitness status. They need to also evaluate the exercises and activities they have been doing and improve their programs that will help make improvements towards their goal. Fitness and wellness isn’t all about working out, the individual needs to work on a diet plan and ways to control metabolic functions. Exercise and eating healthy are inseparable and come hand & hand with one another. Many people in the United States have struggled to eat healthy and also stay with a work out routine, which has resulted in an increase in obesity in America. Good health is just as important as fitness is, so it is important to create a good balance in order to achieve a high quality of life.
To get a full understanding on where you stand on your health and fitness levels, you should regularly assess yourself. There are some specific attributes that an individual should check often to properly judge where they stand on their health and fitness levels. Doing an assessment on your fitness level is a great way to find out how healthy you are and your physical abilities. Before you start any exercise program, it is best to start by doing an assessment so that you know your fitness level before proceeding. Muscular strength and endurance is one of the first things you should check because it is apart of your everyday life, such as walking. According to Livestrong.com, “Muscular strength is the ability

A Diehard Fan Through and Through

...A Diehard fan through and through The lights dim, as a familiar song begins to blast from the stadium speakers. As an engine revs to life, you see two red headlights in the darkness. The crowd roars and jumps to their feet. The song continues on until the lyrics "Bad to the Bone" begin. At the very same moment, you see a truck hauling down a dirt alley into the arena. The crowd is roaring on their feet chanting, “Grave Digger!” Monster Jam World Finals is a hidden gem; Very few people even know about this event, or that they have been held every year since 2000. This year, they changed the event to a two-day show instead of a one day like previous years. At first, I wasn’t sure if two days was going to be a good fit for this event. The price of the tickets went up increasingly or some it seemed. Many people would say that they should have kept the event at a one day. Although I believe that even though the price might have gone up. The two-day event is actually beneficial to you and also the finer quality of the show you receive. Excitement and anticipation overwhelmed me as I stood in line to enter the stadium. The first night was the racing potion of the championship. As you enter the immense red dome, you are immediately greeted with concession stands everywhere. All the cinder-block walls were a mustard yellow with massive signs separating the different sections of the seats in the arena. I walked into the arena down a long tunnel that had the same color and textured walls...

...SWOT and Strategy Evaluation: Fitness Centers Industry Amberly Locke PHL/320 September 14, 2015 Carolyn Harrison It today’s society, “going to the gym” has become a normal phrase heard around the world; however, the fitness center industry is not exactly in the spot light of today’s media and headline news. So, that sparks the interest of what makes the fitness center industry succeed, what are their strengths. What about the fitness center industry in the future; are there weaknesses that could ultimately cause them to fail as a whole? What about opportunities that could add to their success? Are there threats that lean on the shoulders of those managing such an industry? With all this curiosity, a SWOT analysis needed to be done. Are you curious about those results? Are you curious about the future of your gym? Industry Background The fitness center industry only came to light in the 1970s and 1980s with simple cardio (running), and aerobics. Though, in the early 2000s an enormous growth occurred in the industry; in the beginning of the decade there were 16,938 combined gyms and clubs, and by January 2008, there were 29,636 combined gyms and clubs (Franchise Help, 2015). This industry comes in many shapes and colors, so to speak; there are large name-brand franchises such as LA Fitness, 24 Hr. Fitness, and the YMCA, there are small local gyms that are ran by neighbors and friends of a small town, and of course the private, elite country clubs and spas (First Research:...

Total Quality Management

...strategy aimed at embedding awareness of quality in all organizational processes. It has been widely used in education, government, manufacturing, and service industries. TQM processes are divided into four chronological categories: plan, do, check, and act (the PDCA cycle). In the planning phase, people define the problem to be addressed, collect relevant data, and discover the problem's root cause. Next in the doing phase, people develop and implement a solution, and decide upon a measurement to gauge its effectiveness. Third is the checking phase, where people prove the results through before-and-after data comparison. The final phase acting is where, people document their results, inform others about process changes, and make recommendations for the problem to be addressed in the next PDCA cycle (Green 2003).  The large and growing importance of world trade is a major phenomenon of our time. This trend has been increasing from the merger of Europe into the European Union and by the rapid growth of a few of the less developed countries of Latin America, South America, and Asia. A customer needs assurance that quality products will be supplied while dealing assertively with any supplier. This assurance is principally important when customer and supplier are on a global basis,...

Genetic Algorithms

...the analogy of finding the shortest possible distance between two towns or cities in a graph or a map with potential connection, which means that the path distances are always positive. Typically this is represented by a graph with each node representing a city and each edge being a path between two cities and there exist some traditional algorithms that produce solutions for the problem. A new method is found to solve the shortest path problem using GAs. The algorithm has been tested for a road map containing more than 125 cities and the experimental results guarantee to provide acceptably good solutions for the given search space. HE shortest path problem is typical in the world of combinatorial systems. This research will attempt to apply a Genetic algorithm to solve this problem based on a real world system. This is based on the analogy of finding the shortest path (i.e. the shortest possible distance) between two towns or cities in a graph or a map with potential connections (assuming that the path distances are always...

Bally's Total Fitness

...“True enjoyment comes from activity of the mind and exercise of the body; the two are ever united.” (von Humboldt, n.d.). As the public becomes more health-conscious and the aging population places greater emphasis on remaining healthy and fit, the fitness industry is maintaining steady growth because of better dietary practices and a resurgence to play and become more active. It is no surprise the demand for gyms and health and fitness clubs will continue to rise. Therefore, my paper will cover the critical concepts as it relates to Bally Total Fitness Case Study. I will highlight Bally’s history, macro environment, SWOT analysis, corporate-level strategy, business-level strategy, and my recommendation for Bally Total Fitness. History, Development, and Growth Dave “Wild man” Wildman is said to be the founder of Bally Fitness, but it was Raymond T. (Ray) Moloney back in the early 1930’s who decided to create an affordable past time of pinball. Anyone could play pinball at the price of seven balls for one cent or 10 balls for a nickel. In January of 1932, Ray founded the popular past time while working under Lion Manufacturing in Chicago. The Ballyhoo pinball game was easy to make and very profitable. With the creation of the “Goofy,” the “Airway,” the “Rocket,” and the “Bumper” pinball machines, Bally Manufacturing, under Moloney’s leadership, took off. Bally Manufacturing headquarters remained in Chicago at the same address for almost 50 years. In 1936, Bally Manufacturing...

...would result in more familiar structures, we combined an evolutionary algorithm with a model of the physical reality and a purely utilitarian fitness function, providing measures of feasibility and functionality. Our algorithms integrate a model of the physical properties of Lego structures with an evolutionary process that freely combines bricks of different shape and size into structures that are evaluated by how well they perform a desired function. The evolutionary process runs in an environment that has not been unnecessarily constrained by our own preconceptions on how to solve the problem. The results are encouraging. The evolved structures have a surprisingly alien look: they are not based in common knowledge on how to build with brick toys; instead, the computer found ways of its own through the evolutionary search process. We were able to assemble the final designs manually and confirm that they accomplish the objectives introduced with our fitness functions. This chapter discusses background and related work first (section 2), then goes on to describe our methods; first the model we use to simulate Lego structures (sections 3-4), then the representation and evolutionary algorithms (section 5). The results sections (6-7) discuss applications, showing the results of several evolutionary runs and illustrating with pictures of the final assembled Lego...

Case Study: Developing an Overweight Program

...proud heritage and reputation of being the greatest fighting force in the world. It has upheld this status by maintaining the physical fitness and appearance of its soldiers. Every soldier is individually responsible for his or her overall fitness and body fat percentage. In addition to this, every unit appoints a Weight Control Non-commissioned Officer (NCO) to ensure that established weight and body fat standards are adhered to and followed. It is the sole responsibility of the Weight Control NCO to identify soldiers not meeting the standards and develop a program in order to assists those soldiers in meeting the standards. If a unit’s Weight Control NCO successfully develops and implements an effective program, the unit will have a high percentage of physically fit soldiers, who can be mission ready at all times. Background Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, currently has 25 soldiers, who are overweight and do not meet the body fat standards. In light of this problem, First Sergeant (1SG) Jeffery Clark quickly appoints Staff Sergeant (SSG) David Upton as the company’s new Weight Control NCO and charges SSG Upton with the task of developing a program to solve the overweight problem in the company. To accomplish his task, SSG Upton will have to develop a program that incorporates periodic weigh-ins, body fat percentage tests (also known as tape tests), extra physical fitness training, counseling, and nutrition advice for the 25 overweight soldiers...
