Final Project
Learning what diversity means is the first step to learning how it has helped the United States to be better. Diversity is defined as the state of having different races, ethnics, cultures working together in a group or organization. ("Diversity," 2014) Different cultures and races working together make the United States stronger and better as one. Understanding that everyone is the same, even if they each have different colored skin or believe in different things, each person may have their own beliefs but just like you or me they are a person with feelings.
I personally have learned new thing out about my own family history. After a few weeks in the class I decided to join ancestry.com to see if I could learn more out about my family. I most certainly did learn new things out. At the family reunion we like to have everyone to bring a dish and a dessert to the function. We like to do this that not one person or family is responsible and to also exchange all the different ways that each family cooks foods.
I believe that the United States population we greatly increase in the year 2050. I believe this because of the population increase that we have already experienced in the last 50 years. According to the United States Census Bureau in the 1960 census population was estimated at 179,323,175. In the 2010 census population was estimated at 308,745,538. (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2014).Thus being a 129.4 million increase in population in the last 50 year Just estimating that there will be another 129.4 million increase for the next 50 years to come means that we are looking at estimated 438.1 million. I have only included the past amount of an increase not what it really may be. Keep in mind that there will may be large numbers of increase and decreases, due to the fact that there may be a large number of people to give birth or become residents in the United States as well as possible large numbers of deaths due to baby boomer furthering in age and any kind of mass deaths from illness or other.
There are a number of challenges that the United State will face due to the diversity of its people. One, being that there are people that are going to discriminate against others just because that is how they were raised as a child. Kind of like the dame say the saying “monkey see, monkey do”. People will be have from what they have learned, so if we as the people will improve our behavior and teach others about the negativity of discrimination, they we be able to pass it on to others.
There are large amounts of benefits that come from such a diverse society. There are countries all over the world that have not yet been able to socialize like we do here in the United States. For example some countries do not believe in equal rights of women and men. Men in these other countries are classified as being better and more intelligent than women. The women in these countries have to obey and keep quiet while in public or around other men. In one of the thousands show that comedian Gabriel Iglesias states, that while in Saudi Arabia preforming a show he had to go out of the city of Rio because the type of entertainment that he performs is forbidden inside the city. Gabriel also expresses that while preforming the concert that the audience was segregated by gender and that they women wear clothing that covered the entire body only leaving open a small area around their eyes. (Iglesias, 2013) The United States is not like this. We do not have gender segregation at any kind of concert or other performance to the public. We also do not have to preform entertainment outside of a city limits because of religious beliefs.
In order for the United States to foster a climate of acceptance and cultural pluralism, it will take many people to act out to make the change. It is easy to make fun of someone but the people that are picking on someone do not realize that the person being picked on has feelings the same as others. We have to work together, stop discrimination and prejudice to become a better stronger society. Thus we can foster a climate of acceptance and cultural pluralism in the United States.
Media perpetuate stereotyping and prejudices every day. Is it to get people’s attention? Is it to make ratings go up? Or possible because media personnel believes that the way they report information in the form that they do will not offend people. The News Media perpetuate that all Islam’s are terrorist and cause massive amounts of deaths due to bombs and more.
Media is consonantly pointing out the differences in people. Either being race, religion, age, or sex. Thus making diversity obvious and hard for some to overcome, just because one redneck was pulled over for drunk driving does not mean that all rednecks drink and drive. Or a black person was arrest for braking and enter and theft. A Hispanic person is sent back to Mexico because they were here illegally, not all of them are illegals.
Individuals of the United States can work together to promote further education about the effects of prejudice and discrimination towards others. Diversity is the United States as were there are other countries that do not work together like the U.S. does. There are people in the U.S. that adopt children of different race than their own, and there are people that are same sex couples that adopt children. When a crime is committed people are trying to hand it off to others. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their own actions and not blame it on others when they are the one at fault.
I have changed over the years just as others have. I believe that everyone learns as they grow. The phrase ‘Teach an old dog new tricks”, always refreshes me to remember no matter how old we are we can learn from other and do better. Have my own beliefs and I am not going to push them onto someone else. I believe that everyone will have to answer to their maker and it is between them and not for us to decide. This is very hard for me to express my views because I believe that people that commit crimes needs to receive justice for their crimes but I do not believe it is our place to tell someone what religion to believe in, or if same sex is legal or not. I would not want someone to tell how to live my life; I am not going to do it to someone else.
