Notes from Interview 1. Learning new things such as how the jail systems work and how important a detention officer’s job really is 2. Requirements: must be 21 years of age, undergo an extensive background check, U.S. citizen, high school diploma, college education not required but could be extremely helpful 3. Pros: the knowledge of the jail/court system, good benefits and pay, job security
Cons: long training, dangerous, work holidays, and odd shifts 4. Go in briefing room where the LT comes in and let them know about what was going on the shift before them and things they need to do or watch for. LT calls out duty assignments, go to assigned areas where they begin supervisory rounds. Feed twice a day during day shift and one time at night during night shift. We get any people out of court that need to be placed in the facility. Every day is not the same, it could be hectic or laid back. 5. She had an incident where an inmate came in mad and disruptive. She began to talk to him to try and diffuse the situation. The more and more she talked to the inmate he began to calm down. He finally told her what was wrong with him which, was one of his family members had passed and it was hurting him. The next day the when she saw the inmate he stopped her and told her how much he appreciated her. She felt really good about that situation. 6. Criminal justice always appealed to her. She could be hands on with different things in the system and how to handle different types of inmates. 7. She would recommend this job to other people because it is a great job. Even though it has its pros and cons like any other job. It is an opportunity to change things on the inside instead of doing from the outside looking in. 8. The best advice would be to remain humble as you possibly can. Hard work and dedication is important but not as important as being humble. Never forget that the inmate is not beneath you but is just as equal as you. 9. Would eventually like to try being a probation officer, because it is more laid back and could get a chance to explore instead of being confined inside the jail.

Reflective Summary

I selected a woman by the name of Ms. Shanita House. She is a detention officer at Pitt County Detention Center in Greenville, NC. I choose her because she is a person that inspires me. She graduated from high school and then went straight in the work field. She felt that she was trapped in the situation of just working the same job forever, so she decided to go back to school. She did not attend a traditional 4 year university, but a community college and majored in criminal justice. Soon as she graduated she received a job at our hometown detention center. She currently still works there and is constantly looking to be promoted into a higher position. Her experience has relevance and importance to my own career goals because we both worked before the decision to go back to school. It is important to do what is best for you and your life choices when dealing with how you plan on making your money for the next couple of years. The idea of working in a facility is not my first choice, but it I consider it to be a strong alternative decision. Her ambition to strive for better and continuing to work hard at what you want is why she is important to my career goals, because she is leading by an excellent example. When I asked her would she mind doing the interview, she was more than delighted. We had set the date and time and she came up with the idea that we should do it while she was at work so I could shadow her around for the night. I was more than thrilled to experience the jail system from another standpoint other than a visitor to an inmate. When arriving to the facility and her getting everything in order for the interview the actual hustle and bustle of the facility had me thinking that I picked the right person. My first couple of questions were the basic why this job, what are the requirements, and what are the pros and cons of being a detention officer. She felt that she could learn more by working in the jailhouse than the court room. The requirements for the jobs are must be 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen, extensive background check, a high school diploma, and a degree is not required but it can certainly be helpful for the job. The pros and cons that she felt needed to be known were that you get knowledge about the jail/court system, you have job security, and good benefits and pay. The cons are odd shifts, working holidays, long training and could be very dangerous. A turn of events then took place, where the interview had to be shifted to another time. We both heard the siren that indicated that there was a lockdown going on. I had to be escorted out and she had to get in position, so our interview had to be rescheduled. On the next day when the interview took place we picked up where we left off. I continued to ask the other questions that we did not get a chance to answer. We then discussed the typical day, any ethical scenarios, and advice that would be given to help the aspiring officer. Every day does not go the same, sometimes it can be hectic or laid back. She had an encounter with an inmate that came in mad and disruptive. She began to talk to him to try and diffuse the situation. The more and more she talked to the inmate he began to calm down. He finally told her what was wrong with him which, was one of his family members had passed and it was hurting him. The next day the when she saw the inmate he stopped her and told her how much he appreciated her. She felt really good about the way she handled the situation. She explained that she always wanted to be hands on with her learning of jail/court system. She loves the job that she does, she would recommend the job to others and plans to continue trying to make a change from the inside out. From this interview I learned that as long as you have a passion and dedication for the job that you do it will be forever be a great feeling. Some advice that I got from this interview was to always remain humble. Even though being a detention officer is not my first choice, the aspect of being humble is very important. Hard work, dedication, and communication can get you far in life, but being humble can take you even farther. Knowing that the people you encounter are your equal and not beneath you helps you gain the other factors like confidence, attentive listening skills and ambition to get the job done.

Nt1310 Unit 8 Final Project

...Final Design Project The final design was a combination of a month’s worth of creativity, ingenuity, hard work and most importantly, team work. Although the preliminary design was determined to be mostly unusable, we did gain a vast amount of knowledge which was critical to the final design of our project. The first portion of the project was tasked with catching all of the marbles as they were going to be dropped all at once. Our goal was to create a mechanism which would all for the balls to be sent through the project one by one as we believed that this would allow for more efficient and more accurate sorting. Thankfully, we were able to use the same design for the ball delivery system as in the preliminary design as the entire team was very pleased with how well it worked. The final design for the mechanism was built on a cardboard shoe box which was flipped...

Abolish Finals

...are inaccurate. This week of exams is often spent cramming, consuming dangerous amounts of caffeine, and abusing drugs for ADD and ADHD. Teachers who discourage cramming are correct – students will not adequately learn the material through it. A simple solution can be created by slightly changing the system. In an ideal world, grades would not even be assigned. Learning would center on a small group of students discussing the core concepts directly with a professor in an open forum. Unfortunately, our society requires a methodology to differentiate students from one another for college admission and later for internship/job placement. To make this possible, grades should best reflect the aptitude of the students. Instead of having one final exam that heavily determines a student’s grade, teachers should space out assessments evenly throughout a semester. These assessments will force the students to absorb the concepts as the semester progresses. While the assessments should play a major role in determining grades, they should not play the only role. Class can still be held like an open forum in the aforementioned example. To encourage attendance, make class participation a component of the grade. By utilizing the open forum method of class, a professor can very accurately assess the knowledge of a student on a subject. This system can also help students feel confident about assessments, since they were able to answer the exact same questions in class. Any student who is willing...

Fin 516 Final

...In order to assure that you are prepared for the Final Exam, I have been reviewing almost 50 questions for clear wording, sufficient information and correct answers. Most importantly, I wanted to make sure we have covered in class the relevant financial concepts and applications to enable you to respond appropriately. Although I did not generate the Final Exam, I took the liberty of making a few changes in the questions when absolutely necessary. If you stayed to the end of our last class, you have already benefited from my review of the last 3 charts I had added to the Lecture for Week 5, covering “MM Extension Theory” for levered and unlevered firms with growth. Please note the appropriate discount rate rTS is the unlevered cost of equity rsu, which will come up again in this week’s material on mergers and valuation. Bond refunding decisions might appear, either with flotation cost expressed as a percentage of face value or with annual flotation cost tax savings, which will be handled similarly to our treatment of annual post-tax interest savings. I have also added a few charts to the Lectures for Weeks 6 and 7, and have earlier today updated their files in Doc Sharing. The Final Exam, to be taken online, will be open on either Sunday, October 27 or Monday, October 28, to be determined, from 1 PM until 11:30 PM. You will have 4 hours [not 3] and 30 minutes to answer 12 short-answer questions worth 20 points each, for a total of 240 points. They appear on 3 separate pages...

Final Exams

...ARE FINAL EXAM NECESSARY I have news for many of you who have yet to live and work in the real world: rarely in your life will success at any endeavor come down to one event. The real world is getting up every day, going to work at whatever it is you do, making mistakes and learning from them while trying to get better with experience. Although most of you have been conditioned through supposed “make or break you” tests like the SAT and ACT to believe that the culmination of your learning can be gauged by one score on one test taken one particular day, this is a lie. The truth is, that is a ridiculous measurement of successful learning. The way our system is set up is fundamentally flawed. Ending high school with the SAT or ACT, finishing each college semester with a round of heavily weighted tests and basing entrance to graduate schools on standardized test scores like the LSAT, MCAT and GRE does nothing but teach students that attendance and regular work are optional as long as they manage to save themselves with a good midterm and final test grade. This is a bad lesson to teach students because this is not the way the real world works. The classes that allow for you to do this are not helping you at all. By procrastinating all semester long and expecting some miracle to happen where you will suddenly learn everything from the last four months you are not helping yourself at all. Some classes don’t weight or even require a final, they base the grading on quizzes...

...Career Exploration Reflection Paper Monica Jimenez BCOM/275 July 15, 2015 Prof: Richard Dunn Based on what I know from my Career Exploration paper, although I was not so much interest with business, my career were must of them based on business and management offices. I has so much relative to this class because it shows you how to act in front of you co-workers and to approach different types of situation in the work setting. This course show so many stuff about communication that I did not expect could influences so much in my career and also learning to keep away some problem by not using the right word or the right posture, even by making facial expression you might offense someone and brings so many problem to the table. So I realize to keep a flow mood we have to keep some manners at home and try not be so social or silly at work to avoid some misunderstanding. However, we cannot ever be like robots, trying not to express anything, we have to keep a pleasure posture for ourselves in which we think we are not offending anyone. Being at work is just a places where we have to take in consideration everyone around and keep anything that could be annoyed for others to ourselves. Like being in a theater, we have to be quite and relax, so we do not bother anyone. My career is all based on that, must of the thing that I learned from this course I know I am going to implement at my job....
