College Education

...College Education Essay I always said that I would never go back to school. But now with raising a family of four and the cost of doing so and being told that I am in a position at work that has met maximum raise potential, I have decided to take the steps in completing a degree of higher education. I would love the opportunity for career growth, be the first to graduate from college in my immediate family and set an example to my children that completing college is an obtainable goal that can be reached at any age. When I was up for a review at my current job, I was told that they had to cap my salary of my current position. There was also no position I qualified for that I could transfer to have an opportunity to grow with my employer. I was devastated. The management positions at my company were reserved for those who had an advanced degree and no matter how great of an employee I am, the lack of a college degree was truly holding me back. I did not want to continually make the same salary for the rest of my life. I knew that I was worth more to my employer, but needed a degree to achieve this. This was a vital key to making a decision to go back to school. I worried as well on the cost and knew that I could not afford to pay for school myself. But through my research regarding loans and scholarships, I felt comfortable with financing my way back to school. There are numerous benefits an advanced degree can bring to my professional and personal life. Giving my...

Personal Responsibility the Key to Success

...ability to make decisions and act by oneself for oneself” (“What you don’t get out of a college education,” 2003, para. 1). Personal responsibility means different things to different people, but I describe personal responsibility as holding yourself accountable for the choices that we make in our lives and accepting the consequences. Whether it is our academic, professional, or personal life win or lose we are responsible. Personal responsibility is necessary to succeed in college because when students have personal responsibility it will allow students to achieve their future goals. Everyone has responsibilities, to our families, our employers, and to our self. How we handle those responsibilities determines how successful we become in life. Without personal responsibility a person can become dependent on others for acceptance or to make him or her feel valued as human beings. At the moment my responsibilities are to myself as a student, and my responsibilities consist of managing my time, my health, and my finances. Setting time aside to study and do my assignments, making sure that I eat healthy, exercise, and get enough rest and also sticking to my budget so I do not spend more than I have. These are my ways of taking personally responsibility. In order to be successful in college, I must be personally responsible for my own learning. I must participate in my own learning by, logging in to my online class regularly, participating in discussions, and by asking questions if I do...
