Flathead Catfishing

Flathead catfishing is frequently seen in the United States. Why! Because flathead catfish are a native species of the waters there and are popular among the masses as game fish and food. Initially, Flathead catfish dwelled in the Mississippi River and its outlets, but later it found its way to the slow moving waters of the nation. Today, flathead catfish can be found in big rivers, streams, lakes and ponds across the entire United States. Deep waters are their favorite hideouts where they take cover under fallen logs and rocks.

Flatheads derive their name from the shape of their heads which is slightly long and flat. They also have flat oval shaped eyes and a bigger lower jaw that sticks out past the upper jaw. When they reach the length of fifteen to nineteen inches, they are considered mature, and can live up to twenty five or more years. A flathead catfish is not a fussy eater; it will chomp down anything that it can bite into. Although it does have a preference for fish, especially bream. More favorites are perch and sunfish, which often form tempting bait for these flatheads. Flatheads are formidable foes and can wipe out entire populations of sunfish; this mostly takes place in smaller ponds where the flats are non natives. Most redbreast sunfish communities suffered the same fate in small rivers of Georgia, after the invasion of the flathead cat. Light also attracts the flatheads as they tend to feed by sight. Although most catfish feed during the night, a flathead catfish hunts during the day as well. If you are hunting flatheads during the night, you can entice them with light.
