The Flipped Classroom

The Flipped Classroom A concept that has become popular is the "flipped classroom." A flipped classroom is a form of learning in which students watch a short video clip as a homework assignment at their own pace. The student can communicate with teachers and peers through online discussions about anything they may not understand. These videos are created by teacher, they are 5-7 minutes long providing information on the idea that a student would usually learn in the classroom. This allows the teachers to act as a coach or advisor during class, encouraging students to work collaboratively to complete activity. In the video, Katie Gimbar stated that the students are able to "pause, rewind, and rewatch" the video for a better understanding (Gimbar, 2011). This approach will lead to positive outcomes in the classroom. The idea of the flipped classroom is to allow more time for active learning, instead of the traditional lecture. "Educational technology and activity learning are two components of the flipped classroom. They both influence student learning environment in fundamental ways" (Strayer, 2011). The idea of a flipped classroom seems fairly easy. The teacher will need to have access to technology in order to record and capture the lesson they want to teach. The first step is choosing a screen casting software, such as Jing or Camtasia. This software will capture anything on you see on your computer screen, as a video, and lets you share it instantly. "Educators can insert their voice, video clips, photographs and images when creating their video" (Alvarez, 2011). The teacher needs to think about and select the ideas, topics, or concepts they want to flip and how they want to present it. Powerpoints, whiteboards, and posters are ways of doing so. The teacher must also have a webcam and a microphone to record video. When the video has been recorded it will need to be posted for students to view. The video can be uploaded on the teachers personal website or YouTube. I chose Divisibility Rules for the topic when flipping my classroom. This flipped lesson is for a group of middle school students. Divisibility rules are a short way of discovering whether a given number is divisible by a divisor without performing the division. The idea of this lesson is to get the students to look at the digits to determine the divisibility. Divisibility rules help with division, factors, prime factorization, simplifying fractions, and finding a LCD. Students struggle in these areas, creating this lesson will give them a better understanding of the rules and be able to apply them to the activities that will be available in the classroom. I will start the classroom lesson by assessing their knowledge on the video assignment and answer any questions. Once I see they understand the concept we will get to work applying those rules, by working in small groups. This will allow for informal assessment of the flipped classroom lesson. When wrapping up the lesson, I will give a short quiz to see if the outcome of the flipped classroom was a success. I can see myself implementing a flipped classroom into my daily lessons. I feel there is never enough time to apply the lesson being taught. I am a fan of inquiry based and active learning. This is the perfect way to incorporate my ideas and create the perfect lesson. This approach provides the student more opportunity instead of reading a textbook and completing an assignment, they are able to view and listen which meets the needs of many learning styles.
