My name is Florence Kelley.

I am from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I am a supporter of women's suffrage, African American civil rights, and children’s right. I am working for an eight-hour workday and minimum age.

I became active in Progressive reforms starting in 1891 and I still participate in reforms to this day.

As a child, I was surrounded by a progressive and highly political family. However, by the age of twelve, my five sisters had died at young ages. Due to the fact that I had become the only female child within my family, I felt that I had a duty to make a difference for my family. I did most of my early schooling in my home, which led to my deep love of reading.

We lobbied for better working conditions, an eight-hour workday and a standard minimum wage for all citizens. By the year 1913, we had some success, as a total of nine states adopted some form of minimum wage law. I also had a part in other organizations, such as the New York Child Labor Committee and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

My colleagues included Jane Addams, M. Carey Thomas, Gabrielle D. Clements, Eliz Sproat Turner, Alzina Stevens, Frank Alan Fetter, W.E.B. DuBois, Ellen Gates Starr, Mary McDowell, Edith Abbott, Grace Abbott, Julia Lathrop, Alice Hamilton, Sophonisba Breckinridge, Upton Sinclair, Jack London, Frances Perkins, and Friedrich Engels

Some of my greatest obstacles in my fight to reform were the declarations made by the United States Supreme Court stating that our legislative reforms on the state and even the federal level are unconstitutional. But those rejections did not stop me from trying to defend my stance. I studied harder, found better evidence to support my arguments and learned from past failures in the courtroom to succeed.

I am a follower of Karl Marx and socialism. I come from a progressive Republican family and I follow those beliefs

Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
