American Dietary Issues: A Personal Responsibility? Throughout American history, American food has represented a big and controversial issue for its consumers. Consumers are getting warn out from diseases that food causes them. On the other hand, the intervention of the government seemed to symbolize a way to fix nutrition problems for some consumers, while for others, that intervention is unnecessary. The government’s influence may be seen in the dietary habits of Americans as consumers are affected by illnesses; however, the dietary habits are entirely the responsibility of the individuals who may be informed by stigmatization and the media. When it comes to diseases produced by eating habits, consumers, doctors, nutritionists, and government representatives are agree that “something” has to be done to end this …show more content…
However, it is necessary to go deeper and discover where the alimentary problems arise. In an essay entitled “Food as Thought: Resisting the moralization of Eating” by Mary Maxfield, Maxfield argues that “Nutritionists suggest that adult humans will eat in a way that is good for them,” while children are not able to reason about whether the food adults provide them could be healthy or not (5). In other words, children might not be focused on how food tastes as they do not have the sufficient knowledge to decide. This lack of knowledge is due to the education that parents give children when children are growing up. The role of parents on children’s eating habits might unveil one solution to dietary problems. Therefore, it is time to provide strict nutrition education to consumers of this
