My perspective

After shopping with my roommate, we passed by a restaurant, and decided have dinner in the restaurant. When we entered the restaurant, I looked around, and found that the restaurant was filled with people. At the same time, one waiter asked us if we had a reservation. Because we didn’t have, he told us to sit on a couch and wait for a minute. Five minutes later. The waiter came, and led us to a table. Then, he gave menus to us. When I looked at the menus, I got in trouble because they were English menus. I think it is most foreigners’ trouble. They either don’t know the words or know the words, but don’t know about the courses. I looked around since I wanted to know what the other guests ordered. “Look, I like their dishes,” I pointed at the next table’s dishes and said to my roommate, “What kinds of food are they eating?” “Wait, let me look.” He responded and looked at the next table too. After few minutes, he pointed at one dish on the menu and indefinitely said “Maybe, they ordered these. We can ask the waiter.” Finally, I ordered the one which was the same as the next table’s dishes. While we were waited for our dishes, we were talking about some interested things and laughing. After about half an hour, here came my food which is steak, salad and soup. I tasted the dishes and found the food were very delicious. I ate the meal very fast and finished it very quickly. I wiped my napkin across my mouth, and belched loudly. After we finished the meals, we needed to wait for the waiter to pay the bill. When we got the bill, we started talking about how much tips we needed to pay. Finally, we just paid a ten percent service charge because in my mind, I thought it was enough. Then we walked out of the restaurant.

Experience at Food Bank

...My experience at the Houston Foodbank I have always had a passion for getting involved in community activities and helping people as much as I can, being able to translate that passion into a reality at the Houston Foodbank was a memorable experience for me. The activities of the day started at 8:00 am with registration and a welcome address from the staff at the Foodbank. After the address, the group was split into two subgroups, people with blue tags and those with orange tags. I was part of the group with the blue tags. One of the leaders took us into a sorting room where we had to separate and sort items from big boxes into smaller banana boxes. The items range from cereal to drugs to toys and other household products. Items such as water, soda and items that were too big to go into the banana boxes were placed into different boxes. Once a banana box has been filled, it is covered and carried to the packaging unit for proper packing and storing. We did this for about an hour until one of the leaders pulled the UHD students out of the room as it was getting too crowded. The UHD students were then moved to a separate unit where we had to further group the items packed into banana boxes into different categories which includes non-food products, drugs, condiments and soda, dry foods and snacks. Expired food items were placed into a separate container to avoid giving them out. We worked in this unit until the end of the period. Working at the Houston Foodbank taught me a...

Instuctional Strategies and Learning Materials

...Materials The training program for Dan McGuinness Irish Pub will be carried out by The manager, Brad O’Sullivan, and head server, Tony Ainsley. Both have had many years of experience in the restaurant and bar field, and will bring that experience to the table for the duration of the course. The company believes the best way to handle the training, is to treat everyone who participates as if they are brand new to the business. The company understands this may cause some of the more experienced participants to become frustrated, but the company believes everyone should start at the beginning and learn together. Instructional Strategies The management at Dan McGuinness believes it is important for the course to be informative, instructional, and just as important, fun. Much of the groundwork in the classes will be familiar to many of the more experienced personnel, however the company believes any member of staff coming into the business for the first time will benefit from the more experienced personnel. The first strategy to be put in place will be to set up learning teams; each team will include an experienced person as team leader. During the course of the program, there will be situational roll playing; this will be overseen by the experienced personnel because they will most likely have had experience in dealing with most situations the server, or bartender will have to deal with. The two main instructors, Mr. O’Sullivan, and Mr Ainsley, will teach their respective area...

Business Management

...2011). Every person in the world has values and they have been taught to them by what is around them. They may not all have been taught intentionally, but they are instilled in a person and stays with them as they get older. It either comes from experience, family, peers, or even from television. For me personally, I value most is independence. Not everybody feels the same way as I do but it’s what I have seen and I have experienced. Not only have I experienced it in my personal life but I have also learned how to be independent in the workplace. I am told or taught something once and from then on I need no help. My managers in the past have told me during my evaluations that it is something I succeed at. I have prided myself in never having to ask what I should be doing at work and I always keep myself busy. According to my self assessment reports, what ranked highest in were knowledge, self respect and security. When it came down to the ranking of instrumental values, truthfulness ranked number one. The reason I ranked it number one was due to my past experiences in the workplace. There are times when you have to be true to yourself and ask for help. I can relate to Kathy, the owner of Kudler Fine Foods Company, when it comes to trying to do everything. While she is the owner, that doesn’t mean that all of the responsibilities should be held by her. When a person tries to take on more than they should, they don’t see what can fall through the cracks...

Hazleton Manufacturing Case Study

...year. However, as time goes on and the cost of fixing damage to transportation increases, the officials of Hazleton must realize that a more permanent solution is needed in order to avoid more costly expenses in the future. The roads in the Hazleton area have been neglected for far too long and in return have caused a burden in the lives of its’ citizens and a financial burden to the city as well. I feel as though the worst part of the pot hole plagued roads in Hazleton is that you never know when your plans are going to be interrupted by an encounter with one. My worst experience was when my friends and I were going to take a trip for the day to celebrate the end of our senior year. Everyone was ready to go and we just had to stop in town to get some gas before we left. We were planning on going to the beach that day. Instead of being greeted by the soft sounds of the oceans and the heavenly smells of the food on the board walk we were faced with the sound of mental dragging on concreate and the smell of burnt rubber. This was all due to hitting an unavoidable pothole when we were driving to the gas station. After living in our area for a while we have become pretty good at avoiding potholes, but in this case there was nowhere to go and if we stopped an accident would have absolutely occurred. In the end our plans were canceled and we had to put our money for the day towards fixing the damage that was done on the car. Overall I feel as though we have progressed so much over time...

Carruthers

...Reading Comprehension Paper #7 What does Carruthers mean by “nonconscious experiences”? How does he argue that they differ from conscious experiences? What conclusions does he think follow regarding the nature of animal experience? When Carruthers speaks of nonconscious experiences, he is talking about the experiences that humans have that they are not active in noticing. It is hard to explain without using examples, so a good example is when you have driven somewhere for an hour, and you get there, and you can’t remember anything about your drive there or your experiences along the way. This is because you are “nonconsciously” experiencing the drive, while your mind is focused on something else, such as your plans for later in the day. Carruthers argues that these differ from conscious experiences in that we don’t “feel” them. That when we have these experiences, we do not consciously perceive them and they are done almost as automatic responses to our environment rather than behaviours we choose to engage in. His conclusion regarding animal experiences is that their brains are not as high-level as the brains of humans, and therefore all of their experiences are nonconscious because they are not self-aware. Carruthers suggests that animals simply automatically respond to their environment rather than actively consciously respond to it. This in turn means that animals do not “feel” and we should not believe that way do. The reason we feel sorry for animals is that they...

Three Reasons a Person Should Attend College

...Three Reasons a Person Should Attend College Nowadays, education is playing a very important role in everyone’ life. Therefore, college serves as a great place to get better educated. When asked the question “why do you need to choose to go to college or the university”, people have different answers. For me, I believe the three main reasons are for more money, for good friends, for the different kind of experience. The first reason refers to money, which may sound common but is really very important. No one can live without food, drinks or anything else. And it is obvious that people who get a bachelor degree can receive a higher pay at first than who do not have one. And the research also shows more exactly that the difference can be more than $1 million in the course of their lifetimes. What’ is more, one having a Master or Doctor degree can do better. With a lot of money, people can travel, relax, do whatever they want, and they can also provide a better life for their parents, children. They do not need to experience much hardship, for example, those who do not have these degrees need to work form the basic level which requires more boring and complicated tasks. So money can be a very attractive reason for people to attend college. The second reason is that we can make many good friends at college. In every college, there are many students from different cities or even different countries. They major in various subjects and have several habits. When we come...

Perfect Pizzeria

...reading, the franchise just hires anyone that is available without fully laying out the requirements for any position opening they have. There are no education requirements for employees or managers, most of the managers are young and either in college or high school. Each franchise has one manager, an assistant manager, and two to five-night managers with part time employees making minimum wage. The managers of each pizzeria work under an area supervisor. The managers and assistance managers were full time employees with chances of getting bonuses; however, these managers can only receive their bonus if the percentage of food and beverages are low. If the percentage is high, the manager doesn’t receive the bonus. The percentage of the pizzeria had been high, but still making a profit, because employees would make up for their paycheck by eating the food themselves or accidentally spilling the inventory. After a while, the main manager was forced to come into work and work side by side with his employees, which is against company policy, to fix these problems. He also had to change some policies to keep the employees from taking advantage of them, such as increasing the hours the employees must work to be entitled to their benefits of free pizza, salad, and drinks. By doing this for a few months the problems seemed to be fixed and the manager stopped coming in to check up on them; however, it didn’t take long before some of the older employees influenced new employees and...

Finally, this report would not be possible without the contributions of the women who told us about their experiences. © 2004 Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children ISBN# 0-9688655-3-4 1 “To understand violence, we have to examine both the personal experience and the terrain of that experience.” Dr. Yasmin Jiawani This report is built on the personal experiences of women who have experienced workplace harassment, but their stories are also about the “terrain” or the context of those experiences. In drawing out the commonalities of their experiences, we have begun to shed light on the terrain. We must transform the terrain if women are to have equality and safety in their workplaces. 2 We dedicate this report to Theresa Vince whose death in 1996 changed the views of many people in Ontario about sexual and workplace harassment. Her tragic and untimely death showed us that workplace harassment can no longer be easily dismissed as a trivial problem. Fundamentally, the goal of this report is to prevent any other woman from losing her ...
