For many ppoems in light of this statement.eople home is defined by the people who live there. Compare and contrast the ways in which home is represented in at least two poems. Many people associate home with the people living in it. So for them home could be anywhere in the world as long as their loved ones are with them. But when that person dies one loses their sense of security and also tends to feel abandoned. In Aunt Julia the poet speaks about her and his loneliness and anger after she passed away and also his childhood memories. He says she used to speak Gaelic but he could never understand her. In the 2nd stanza he says she used to wear men’s boot and her strong feet were stained with peat. By this we can tell that his aunt was a very strong and independent woman .In the 3rd stanza he says that he was the most comfortable in her house and even the sound of crickets at night used to comfort him. In the next stanza her strength is personified through the word “flouncing”. He says “she was buckets and water flouncing into them.” This suggests that she was very lively and energetic. In the 5th stanza we come to know that his aunt has died. He uses words such as “silenced”, “black” and “grave”. He says that he can still hear her voice welcoming her and it sounds like a seagull’s voice. Seagulls have a very homely sound and this tells us her presence made him feel at home. But as he says he still hears her voice even after she’s dead suggests that he had a spiritual connection with her even after her death. He’s angered by her death because he had so many questions to ask and now he’ll never know and he never learnt to speak Garlic either. So in this way he talks about his childhood memories and how she meant a lot to him. He uses positive words to describe her never suggests unhappiness in her presence. He also respects her immensely and grieves a lot when she dies. In Autobiography, poet talks about the loss of his mother and his emotions at that time. In the 1st stanza he talks about his happy childhood days and how cheerful they were. In the 2nd stanza he says that his father made the walls resound and wore his collar the wrong way round. He’s trying to be humorous here because his father was a clergyman. In the following stanza he talks about his mother and he says he used to wear a yellow dress. The colour “yellow” is a very warm and secure colour and he’s probably saying that his mother made his feel secure and safe and also brought happiness to his life. But in the 4th stanza he says that “When I was five the black dreams came ”. So this shift in colours from yellow to black suggests something bad has happened. The black dreams could have also been his father because a clergyman usually wears black. He says that his mother died and no one cared for him maybe because they were grieving as well. He says that “When I woke they did not care; Nobody, nobody was there”. It sounds like he felt abandoned after his mother’s death and it’s even self-pitying. In the last 2 stanzas he says that “When my silent terror cried, Nobody , nobody replied”. This suggests that he kept all his emotions bottled up and failed to express them and in the end he’s determined to carry on. The “chilly sun” is probably his happy childhood days which have now become cold and unpleasant after this mother’s death and he decides to move on alone. Both the poems are very similar in terms of losing someone very close to them. They’re both angered by the death of their aunt and mother respectively. But the 2nd poem seems more self- pitying. In both the poems their childhood days are happy. But in Aunt Julia, the poet talks more about his aunt and the things she used to do. Whereas in Autobiography, it’s more about the poet’s pain after his mother died and more about the feelings and emotions he had. So in both the poems home is defined by the people in it and when the aunt and mother dies they feel more alone and lonely.
