FORCE TABLE — ADDITION AND RESOLUTION OF VECTORS INTRODUCTION Forces add together as vectors. For example, if two or more forces act at a point, a single force may act as the equivalent of the combination of forces. The resultant R of the sum of two force vectors A and B is a single force which produces the same effect as the two forces, when these pass through a common point (see figure). The equilibrant E is a force equal and opposite to the resultant. A vector may be broken up into components. To find the components of a vector in a particular coordinate system, one must find the vectors aligned with each of the perpendicular axes of the coordinate system which give the original vector when added together.

METHODS FOR ADDING VECTORS PARALLELOGRAM METHOD & POLYGON METHOD To add two vectors, A + B by the parallelogram method a parallelogram is drawn of which two adjacent sides have magnitude and direction of A and B respectively. The diagonal of the parallelogram then has the same magnitude and direction as the resultant, R. Thus A + B = R. An equivalent method which may be used to add more than two vectors is to draw the vectors to be added “head to tail” (head of A to tail of B, head of B to tail of C, etc.). An arrow connecting the tail of the initial vector to the head of the final vector describes the vector sum of the vectors added. This is sometimes called the polygon method. COMPONENT METHOD To add two dimensional vectors by the component method, all vectors are regarded as beginning at the origin. The vectors are then resolved into x and y components. These components are then added algebraically, and the sum of the x and y components represent the components of the sum of the vectors. ANALYTICAL METHOD USING TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES The law of cosines and the law of sines can be used to find the magnitude and direction of the resultant when two vectors are added together by the head to tail method. Consider a triangle whose sides a and b represent two vectors added together, and side c represents the resultant vector. Then let angle α be opposite side a, angle β opposite side b and angle γ opposite side c. The law of cosines is then c2 = a2 + b2 − 2ab cos γ, and the law of sines is sin α sin β sin γ = = . a b c These formulas can be proved from the basic trigonometric definitions. Note that in the special case of γ = 90◦ , the law of cosines becomes the Pythagorean theorem, and the law of sines follows from the definition of the sine function. 1

GENERAL PHYSICS I EQUIPMENT Force table, Four pulleys, Four plastic hangers (5 grams each), Weight set (weights of 5, 10, 20 ,50 and 100 grams), String, Bull’s eye level, Meter stick or other measuring device, Protractor. PROCEDURE

EXPERIMENT NO. 5

0. When adding weight make sure you consider the weight of the hanger! Since the hanger weighs 5 grams, if you want 50 grams you need add 45 to the hanger, etc. 1. Check to see that your force table is level, using the bull’s-eye level provided. (If not, you may adjust the legs slightly by unscrewing them.) 2. Attach three pulleys to the force table. (Do not tighten the screws too tightly. This can damage the pulleys.) Tie three strings on the ring and hang each over a pulley. These should be tied loosely enough to be able to slide around. 3. Attach a weight hanger on each string by winding the string around the top of the weight hanger a couple of times. (It should hold without a knot.) Be sure the string is not so long that the hangers touch the table. 4. Given the two vectors, F1 = 0.075 kg × g Newtons at 120◦ and F2 = 0.050 kg × g Newtons at 45◦ , (g = 9.8m/s2 is the acceleration due to gravity) find their vector sum or resultant by the following procedures. (a) Graphical Method. Use the parallelogram method of vector addition. (Be sure to use a scale large enough to minimize errors.) (b) Analytical Method using Trigonometric Identites. Use the law of cosines to compute the magnitude of the resultant force, and the law of sines to calculate the angle of orientation. (c) Experimental Method. Use the force table to determine the resultant force, by finding the equilibrant force using trial and error until the force balances the other two. Start with the ring held in place by the plastic bolt in the center of the force table. Once the forces are in equilibrium, the bolt can be removed and the ring should return to the center when it is moved around. 5. Repeat step 4 for F1 = 0.100 kg × g Newtons at 20◦ and F2 = 0.075 kg × g Newtons at 150◦. 6. Repeat step 4 for F1 = 0.200 kg × g Newtons at 0◦ and F2 = 0.150 kg × g Newtons at 90◦ . Note that F1 and F2 are the x and y components of a vector F = |F1 |ˆ + |F2 |ˆ. ı  ◦ 7. Given a force vector of 0.150 kg × g Newtons at 70 , resolve the vector into its components graphically, analytically (using trig identities), and experimentally. 8. Add the three vectors F1 = 0.050 kg × g Newtons at 30◦ , F2 = 0.075 kg × g Newtons at 80◦ , and F3 = 0.125 kg × g Newtons at 225◦ to find F = F1 + F2 + F3 , using all three methods: (a) Graphically — Using the “polygon” method. (b) Analytically — Using the component method. (c) Experimentally — Using the force table. (For this, you will have to add another string, pulley and weight hanger to the table.) QUESTIONS — For the writeup. See instructions. 1. Discuss the possible sources of error for each method. How would you rank the three methods as far as accuracy is concerned?

Palliser Furniture

...Palliser Furniture Contents Executive Summary 3 Problem Statement 4 Situation Analysis 4 Alternatives 5 Recommendation 9 Action Plan 9 Contingency Plan 10 References 11 Appendix A-B 12 Executive Summary Palliser Furniture (Palliser) is a key player in the highly competitive North American residential furniture market. They are under constant pressure to stay competitive and profitable in an ever changing market place. The volume of furniture solid is highly correlated to new homes sales and the industry has been slow to bounce back from the recession of 2008. Import penetration from countries with emerging economies is putting pricing pressures on domestic furniture manufacturers. To leverage its key success factor of low shipping costs and short delivery times Palliser has focused on strategic locations for their factories by identifying the different target markets for its comprehensive product lines and have made expansion decisions appropriately. Our recommendation is that they continue with their current location strategy as it meets their operation goals and allows them to access the highest number of market segments and is the best strategy to grow the business. In assessing new locations for strategies we recommend the company determine which of their product lines or revenue streams have the highest consumer demand and...

Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose

...and measures 24 ½ X 43 1/8 In.  This is the only still life Zurbaran signed in his life, at the lower right corner. In the painting, we can see a plate with citrons (not lemons), a basket of oranges and another plate with a cup, next to a rose.   The artist used many elements of form in this painting. The elements of form that I noticed were Color, Texture, and Light.  The Artist portraits these objects in a realistic way, these can be noticed in the reflection of the citrons on the silver plate, in the details of the basket, in the soft reflection of this basket on the table and in the amount of textures in the composition. Also, the play of light and shadows is subtle but profound.  The color of the fruits, pop up and contrast against the black background and the dark tone of the wood from the table.  The Principles of Design that I noticed were Proportion, Scale, Rhythm, Balance, Directional Forces and Contrast. The arrangement of the orange...

Work

...I am the overnight manager at the local IHOP restaurant. The normal everyday life of the restaurant is quite dull and boring. We are open Sunday through Thursday from 6 A.M. until midnight. On Friday and Saturdays we are open twenty-four hours a day. When the witching hour hits at midnight on these two nights, in particular, it is like being one of the main characters in a Tim Burton movie, maybe perhaps, “A Nightmare at IHOP”. The first of the stragglers start to uproot themselves from their graves around 2:30 A.M. This is when the majority of the clubs start to shut down all over Birmingham. You know what kind of night you are going to have when you see the first of your guests trying to detangle themselves from the restraints of their cars. If it takes them twenty minutes just to exit the vehicle you know you’re in for a bumpy ride. The next thing you notice is the clothing of the people that are about to enter the restaurant. Clothes make up a huge part of this chilling experience. These girls have also rummaged into a t-shirt drawer and decided that a t-shirt will be the choice dress of the night. The t-shirt barely covers the back of their hairy upper thighs. But hey, the mirror that they looked into before they left their house for the night said, “Girl, you look damn sexy”. Glittery makeup is acceptable when it is worn on the eyelids but when you have liberally powdered your entire upper body it is only accentuating...

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND INFORMATION Muungano group is a self-helpgroup made of school leavers. The aim of this group is to become self-reliant and attain financial independence by engaging in furniture making. It was realized that the number of temporary carpenters and customers are increasing due to increasing demand of furniture. This has led to increase in record keeping which is bulky and consumes a lot of the limited space of storing record. Moreover, this has made the business inefficient. I came up with a furniture management system that will end all this problems and bring the business to its standards. PROBLEM RECOGNITION The problem...

Santa Claus is my grandfather! *The following story is purely based on my imagination. :) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Present 1 (it just means chapter 1, instead of writing chap 1, I feel this is more interesting? XD ) 'Will you be my queen, princess?' he spoke with so much love and gentleness, it could melt any girl's heart. Yes! I longed to say yes. I don't really know why but I just have this feeling that I have to say yes. However, the sad thing is that I can only see a black silhouette of this 'king' or 'prince' kneeling in front of me. I couldn't see his face. 'Yes,' I whispered lightly and at the same time, I could feel blood gushed to my cheeks. He rose from his knee and lifted my chin to face him. As he leaned closer toward me, my heart was pounding rapidly against my ribcage. Of course, I am nervous and excited because I haven't had my first kiss yet. Hey! Don't you dare to laugh at me! I am just waiting for the right person to appear at the right moment for the one and only first kiss. Every girl has her right to dream. :P I closed my eyes and anticipated the moment where our lips touched. It was soft.... Wet and sticky... Hold on a minute! Wet and sticky??!! Eww!! Such likenesses allow the reader to perceive the object more precisely. An objective sample: The kitchen table is rectangular, seventy-two inches long and thirty inches wide. Made of a two-inch-thick piece of oak, its top is covered with a waxy oilcloth patterned in dark red and blue squares against a white background. In the right corner, close to the wall, a square blue ceramic tile serves as the protective base for a brown earthenware teapot. A single white placemat has been set to the left of the tile, with a knife and fork on either side of a white dinner plate, around nine inches in diameter. On the plate are two thick pieces of steak. (Notice how "objective" the narrator in the piece is; his or her eyes scan the scene, but there is no emotional response provoked by the scene). A subjective sample: Our lives at home converged around the pleasantly-shaped kitchen table. It was the magnet that drew our family together quite warmly. Cut from the sturdiest oak, the table was tough, smooth, and long enough for my mother, my two sisters, and me to work or play on at the same time.
