The Move Review: I've never met anyone like Forrest Gump in a movie before, and for that matter I've never seen a movie quite like "Forrest Gump." Any attempt to describe him will risk making the movie seem more conventional than it is, but let me try. It's a comedy, I guess. Or maybe a drama. Or a dream.
The screenplay by Eric Roth has the complexity of modern fiction, not the formulas of modern movies. Its hero, played by Tom Hanks, is a thoroughly decent man with an IQ of 75, who manages between the 1950s and the 1980s to become involved in every major event in American history. And he survives them all with only honesty and niceness as his shields.
And yet this is not a heartwarming story about a mentally retarded man. That cubbyhole is much too small and limiting for Forrest Gump. The movie is more of a meditation on our times, as seen through the eyes of a man who lacks cynicism and takes things for exactly what they are. Watch him carefully and you will understand why some people are criticized for being "too clever by half."

New Zealand and India Forest Resources

...Internet Assignment 1 New Zealand Forest Resources New Zealand is a widely diverse ecoregion which is made up of 7 contiguous ecoregions. These regions are spread over 170,000 sq. km (or, 65,500 sq. miles). With only 5 major temperate rainforests in the world, the temperate forests of the South Island of New Zealand are some of the largest areas of native vegetation in the country. The New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis) belongs to the ancient conifer family, Araucariaceae, one of the largest and longest-living trees in the world. The most southern-growing species, New Zealand kauri, is restricted to the sub-tropical forests in areas north of latitude 38°. The Afforestation Grant Scheme (AGS) helps growers establish new forest plantations. Producing 100% of its products from plantation forests; the New Zealand plantation forests and wood products industry is based on wholly renewable resources, the industry is predominantly based on sustainable plantations of Monterey pine or New Zealand pine, and Pinus radiata, commonly known as radiata pine. Douglas-fir and various eucalyptus and cypress trees are also grown for timber. FOA members manage around two-thirds of the plantation forests of New Zealand’s 1.79 m ha plantation forestry estate. Over 94% of the plantation forests are privately owned and over 90% of New Zealand’s planted forests are pinus radiata. Forestry in New Zealand is geared to both domestic and export demand. About 44% of the harvested logs and various percentages...

The Degradation of Women Through Advertisements

...days ago, before being assigned this extra credit opportunity. The advertisement that I am going to be analyzing was found in a Cosmopolitan magazine only a few days ago. The advertisement is for Orbit chewing gum and at first the picture seems rather harmless. However, when you stop to think about what was said in the video shown in class, you may begin to see and think otherwise. As I flipped through the pages of the magazine I found myself stopped because of an enticing advertisement. This ad in particular has a very nice looking woman dressed like a Hawaiian hula dancer who is front and center on the page with only a small portion of beach and ocean behind her. All seems well so far, right? Well, everything would be fine or at least acceptable if things were not so bizarre. The thing that struck me as a little out of the ordinary was that she was not wearing a real bikini top or even a coconut brassiere. The thing that makes this ad so degrading towards women is the fact that this beautiful young lady is wearing two packs of Orbit gum tied to string to cover up her breasts. That is not all. On top of the insult that they would exploit a woman’s breasts to sell chewing gum, they make a poor attempt at witty-humor as well. This is because the flavor of the chewing gum that Orbit and the Wm Wrigley Jr. Company are advertising is “NEW! Orbit Maui Melon Mint”. This is particularly...

...sugar free spearmint gum go through change when it is heated? First, we must understand what gum is used for. One use is that it can be used to freshen up your breath. Also, a use for gum is to chew it when you have an upset stomach when Tums are not available. Another use is to use gum as an adhesive when nothing else is around. Gum’s melting point is about 125 degrees fahrenheit (mentalfloss.com). By knowing this we hypothesized that the gum would melt to a liquid. In our experiment we used spearmint sugar free gum of four different brands: Extra, Icebreaker, Trident, and Orbit. In order to answer this research question, we must first know the...

Should Kids Be Allowed To Chew Gum In School

...“POP!” Her gum popped in her mouth. The mint flavor was her favorite and now she could chew gum in class. No teachers pestering her over gum anymore. At least thats what would happen if she could chew gum in class. But she couldn’t, and that’s where I come in as principal. Allowing her to chew it when ever she wanted; all the kids chew it anyway so instead of having the teacher waste time yelling at every kid in the classroom, and wasting time everyone could chew it! By having teachers yell at kids for doing this, it takes away class time that is beneficial for kids to know. Envisage if kids had their own dorms in the school. Good idea, right? Rainforest Biome

...Dear Ms. Roberts, It is currently the summer of 2016 and I have just arrived in Brazil to watch the summer Olympics with my beloved, British boyfriend Harry Styles. Harry was invited to perform at the opening ceremonies here in Rio de Janeiro with his band, so I decided I would come with him and research the Tropical Rain Forests. The thing most different about rain forests compared to South Dakota is the fact that they are warm year-round. In fact, rain forests go through virtually no season changes. To say it simply, every season there is equivalent to a wet, hot summer. Tropical rainforests on average have around 100 inches of rain a year and the temperatures range from 40 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The amounts of animals that are located in the rainforests seem endless. One of my favorites, though, is the Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth. This sloth is unique because unlike many other species of animals, the male and females are almost exactly proportional. Both genders range from 17 to 31 inches in height and weigh anywhere from 5 to 15 pounds. Another very unique species I found in this tropic climate was the Red-Eyed Tree Frog. The thing you may notice at first would be the big, bulging red eyes; but I noticed their special way of camouflaging themselves. Although their eyes may be very noticeable, those big eyes are actually how they hide themselves from predators. When this species of frogs close their eyes, the eye lids are a vibrant...

Global

...An important ecosystem service provided by forests is the ability to counter-act the effects of global warming. Carbon dioxide, a contributing factor to global warming, is taken up by the plants and vegetation contained in forests through photosynthesis and the resulting carbon is stored in both living and dead plant biomass. This process, known as carbon sequestration, greatly reduces the potential for global climate change (IPCC 2001). Forest cover also affects the albedo, that is, the proportion of incident solar radiation that is reflected by the earths surface. The dense green coloured canopy of tropical forests have a low albedo when compared with grasslands or deforested areas. This allows for more incident solar radiation to be absorbed and cooler air termperatures (O’Brien 1996). Perhaps the most important ecosystem service provided by forests, which is a basic requirement for life, is the supply of clean water. Forests facilitate the storage of clean water through filtering precipitation through the tree canopy. This, in effect, slows the rate at which precipitation collects at the ground surface allowing it to remain unsaturated. It is estimated that over 2/3 of the clean water supply is United States is contained within stream water, which was filtered through forests, with a direct value exceeding $27 billion per year (Snail 2009). This clean water can be captured and stored in watersheds that in turn, can be used for variety of purposes including agriculture,...

Corruption has been a prevalent issue in Indonesia, and was even worse after the end of the Suharto government system. Deforestation rate is excessive from 1.3 to 2 million hectares every year. Indonesia represents about one-quarter of global tropical wood production and exports, and about half of global tropical hardwood plywood exports. Indonesia is one of the prime targets of international awareness on illegal logging and forest destruction operation (Creek 2004). According to Creek (2004), ‘The...
