The essay that we read is the part of the book by Michel Foucault “Discipline & Punish” (1975), Panopticism. So, actually who is Michel Foucault and what is he known for? “He was a French philosopher and historian, associated with the structuralist and post-structuralist movements. Foucault was born in October 15, 1926, and to a big regret has died in 25th of June 1984. The book “Discipline & Punish” was published in France in 1975, and translated to English in 1977 by Alan Sheridan. “(Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). The part of the essay that we read was “Panopticism” in III section DISCIPLINE 3.
To begin with, let me summarize this part of the essay. What is “Panopticon” and how it works? The structure of “Panopticon” should be used …show more content…
This type of system helps to see the difference between each person and have individual characteristic. Amid patients, the doctor, dividing them from each other can watch each patient symptom, if he/she is getting better or worse, and taking care of each patient individually. Also, this separation from each other will guarantee that there is no danger of spread of an infection, if there are madmen, no risk of their committing mutual violence upon one another. For example, there is a madmen and he is in the same chamber with not a madmen. The madmen patient might influence mentality of another patient. Another example is school, and how “Panopticon” might work there. So here, the individual observation might exclude cheating, wasting time to chatter or other distracting things, making noise. For instance, there is a student who is always distracting and talking, not doing homework, but getting an “A” on tests and quizzes. So, there is a huge chance that he is cheating, to find out that, teacher needs to separate all students from each other. After separating each student, give them test and see how each student is doing. By their work, teacher might see on what topics and where, each student struggle with. May be the student who was distracting, but still getting an “A” on tests, was cheating before, or he is smart enough, but too active in class, and teacher was overjudging him. Last, but not least example from the quote is about workers. By keeping workers in one room, the chief might see if the worker is doing his job well, on time. Also, there is not going to be robbery, disorder, and other distracting things which slows down the rate of work, and might distract their coworkers work. For example, the chief will separate each worker from each other and give personal task. The chief might see how well that specific

It will give an example of the way it can be observed, through contemporary society. Firstly, it will cover a general aspect of Foucault’s work, regarding his historical method and his understanding of madness, power, knowledge and the body. It will discuss the idea of the Panopticon and how it shaped the idea of discipline and power. Furthermore, it will examine one element of Foucault’s theory, and how it could be applied in contemporary society, through the subject of security in public places. Foucault’s 1964 work Madness and Civilisation, studied the evolution of madness from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, showing the evolving change of how madness was perceived over time in society. During the time of the Renaissance, Foucault found that people who were ‘mad’ were seen as liberated (Foucault 1967). However, the classical age in the seventeenth century created ‘enormous houses of confinement’ which reduced madness to silence (Foucault 1967:35). The mid seventeenth century saw madness associated with confinement. These institutions housed people who were poor, unemployed, prisoners and insane. In 1656, the ‘Hôpital Général’ was founded in Paris and could be seen from the start, that it was not a ‘medical establishment’, but rather a sort of ‘semi-judicial structure’ (Foucault...

There was a closing of the town and its outer lying districts. Each street was placed under the authority of a syndic, who keeps it under surveillance. Each house was watched over by the syndic who would come to lock each door from the outside of the house. Everyone was quarantined into their homes. The severity of this lack of freedom was expressed in Foucault’s essay when he said inspection functions ceaselessly. The gaze is alert everywhere, and a considerable body of militia, commanded by good officers and men of substance, guards everyone, everywhere, to prompt the obedience of the people. Foucault discussed the rise of lepers, which also gave rise to disciplinary projects. Rather than separating people into groups, like they did during the plague, multiple distinctions were used to separate people. The plague-stricken town was, as Foucault states, traversed throughout the hierarchy, surveillance, writing, the town immobilized by the functions of extensive power. In order to have the perfect disciplinary functioning, one would put themselves in the place of the syndic during the plague.  This control over people functioned to cut them off from all contact with each other. I argue that human resource management (HRM) may be best understood as a discourse and set of practices that attempt to reduce the indeterminacy involved in the employment contract. Here I reread HRM practices from a Foucauldian power-knowledge perspective and suggest that this provides an avenue to reorient contemporary, historical, and comparative analyses of the area. A glimpse at human resource management (HRM) texts would seem to give light to a comment by Beer, Spector, Lawrence, Mills, and Walton (1984) that HRM is a series of seemingly disjointed activities. This notion echoes an earlier view of Baldamus (1961: 347) that what is encompassed by HRM's subject matter is "anything from supervision, incentives and profit sharing to machine-paced production, methods of training and employee selection."
