The first one is done at Mahoney’s new job position with the resource he uses to perform the job. The second one is to teach Mahoney to go completely at his own pace and to study whatever aspects of the topics in order to successfully by leaving other parts. 2) The first step of Timmson’s training should be to help Mahoney to learn the self-directed learning which Mahoney will be going completely their own pace and study whatever aspects of the topic in order to success by learning. 3) During the training, Timmson should conduct the directed of Mahoney and the way of communication with customers to Mahoney. The first part is to teach Mahoney how to do his job without the boss helpful and meaningful and also make him learn self-directed during his daily work. And also Tommson should let Mahoney to clear about his job and manage his job-time. The least one is to increase Mahoney’s communication skills with costumers and sale skills. 4) I think the positive reinforcement and extinction would work best for changing some of Mahoney’s more problematic behaviors. Mahoney had doubt about what he should do to increase sales and manage the store. So the major aim of this training is to focus on how to tell Mahoney to manage his job and this store. 5) The appropriate training techniques...

Carrying Out a Site Investigation

...Task: In my capacity as a building consultant I have been asked to carry out a site investigation on two specified sites that a client is keen to develop. Introduction: In this assignment I have been asked to carry out a site investigation as a building consultant, on two specified sites that a client is keen to develop, Therefore I am going to show how each site investigation is constructed on both areas, as one site is at the north of Peterborough (Eye Village) and the other at the south (Hampton) Both landscapes may differ however this should not affect the way each site investigation is carried out. Currently Hampton has been under redevelopment for the past 15 years, as it was previously used as a quarry to store unused rocks and bricks for the brick industry, where as the site in Eye Village is a standard brown field site that is just run down and disused. Task 1: A site investigation describes the process of carrying out investigations on land to determine whether there is contamination present and to collect sufficient, suitable data for the purpose of risk assessment. Moreover it is a study of a sites state of affairs to determine their probable influence of the external and internal design and structure If a site investigation was not taken place, for landscape, drainage or vegetation such as tree preservation order (TPO) reasons, the build may not physically be able to commence, Also a huge risk of health and safety issues can take place if this investigation...

Foundation Types

...Types of Foundation The foundation is the base for the constructed building and as such is required to carry out several functions as follows: 0 The foundation should safely sustain and transmit to the ground the combined dead and imposed loads of the building without resulting in any settlement or other movement of the building or any adjoining works. 1 Foundations should be deep enough or be constructed in such a way as to avoid damage by the swelling, shrinkage or freezing of the subsoil. 2 The foundation should be capable of resisting attack by chemicals such as soluble salts or other deleterious materials present in the subsoil. Choice of Foundation The designer is required to choose the most appropriate type of foundation taking account of two main factors: * The total dead and imposed loads of the building * Possibility of subsoil movement The foundation design should take account of any subsoil movement caused by changes in the moisture content of the subsoil. These movements are normally changes in volume when the subsoil becomes either wet or dry and will normally occur near the surface of the soil . Similar volume changes can occur due to water freezing and expanding in a soil (this is called frost heave). Note the average foundation loading for a two-storey domestic dwelling is normally between 30 and 50 kN per metre. Foundation Types The most common foundation types used in low-rise domestic and light industrial buildings...

Soil Investigation

...Soil investigation is often neglected or rejected by most clients on the basis of cost, despite the fact that the cost of carrying out a soil investigation is very little compared to the cost of the project Soil investigation is done for various purposes. In engineering, soil investigation is very necessary. It is essential to investigate the soil of the selected plot on which a structure will be constructed. Based on soil investigation a soil report is prepared for the purpose of designing the building foundation. When an engineer designs building foundation he/she must carefully read the report and design the foundation based on the data provided in the report. Soil investigation is required for the following purposes - To know the allowable bearing capacity of foundation for proposed building. To know the depth and type of foundation for the proposed building. To know the allowable passive resistance for the foundation of proposed building. To know the type, grading and nature of soil. To know the ground water level. Typical steps of soil investigation Soil investigation involves following steps –  Details planning for the sequence of operations.  Collecting the samples of soil from the plot.  Determining the soil characteristics by conducting field tests.  Study the condition of ground water level.  Collecting ground water sample for chemical analysis.  Soil exploration.  Testing all collected samples in the laboratory.  Preparation of drawings...

Throughout history, progression and advancement in technology has fundamentally separated us from our evolutionary antecedents, enabling a life of greater comfort, extravagance and an increased ability to procreate and sustain ourselves. This improvement is especially apparent in the world of architecture and civil engineering, where there has been an unremitting ambition to surpass the existing boundaries, particularly with regards to height. The most renowned early example of a structure where height was key are the Pyramids of Giza where elevation was crucial in order to radiate power and divine authority. The tallest pyramid, standing at 146.5m, was built more than 4500 years ago, and remained the tallest manmade structure for the next 3800 years, until the 1300s when Lincoln Cathedral was built topping it by only 13.5m [1][2]...

Construction

...Lotus Riverside Apartment Complex was a newly built residential complex in Shanghai China that toppled over. It was a 13 story building that tumbled over before the building was all the way complete for move in. The building was built with a car garage attached to the bottom of the complex and the building collapsed while the workers were in process of excavating the area for the garage. The Lotus Riverside Complex failed due to many construction errors such as faulty foundation and improper assessment of environment before construction. The workers while excavating the dirt for the garage dumped the dirt on the opposite side of the building. When it rained the excavation started to fill with water and the pressure from the dirt changed the water table of the ground and created three thousand tons of force along with uneven lateral pressure and thus the pilings in the ground to support the building gave way and snapped off sending this thirteen story high building tumbling right over. The building was surrounded by other buildings but was far enough not to affect any of the other surrounding buildings. Engineers who came to the scene of the fallen building said that if the building would have come in contact with other buildings it could have created a domino effect and wiped out a total of nineteen buildings in a matter of minutes. This building disaster could have easily been avoided if the head engineers would have took the time out to calculate the water table around...

Does it mean more time required for meetings, and less for the actual design? Or does it require that less qualified people are given disproportionate influence over design decisions? Design collaboration is actually much more than asking more people for their opinions. Collaboration in the enterprise requires effort – designers must get over their own egos, objections from stakeholders, and the organizational...

...platforms. Balloon: a) Studs in balloon framing extend unbroken from the foundation to the roof. b) Firestops are required in balloon framing to close the cavities in the wall against the passage of fire. c) Floor joists in balloon framing rest on a wood ribbon (also called ribband) recessed into the studs. d) Studs n balloon framing rest on the sill. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Platform: Advantages: Platform framing is much easier to erect. Size of lumber is standardized and easier to manufacture. Almost no additional fireblocking is required. The walls bear upon the platform rather than directly upon the walls of the story below. House can be one or three stories instead of just two. The platforms are convenient working surfaces for the carpenters who build the frame. Disadvantages: Platform frame settles considerably as the wood dries and shrinks. Balloon: Advantages: 40% cheaper than mortise and tenon frame. Two men could attain the same results in a day that required twenty men using the old-fashioned method. Disadvantages: Lumber lengths are much greater, needing to span from the foundation to the attic. Fireblocking has to be added between floors. Floors rest on ribbands around the perimeter of the structure. Why has platform framing become the method of choice? Balloon frame used full-length studs that ran continuously for two stories from foundation to roof. In time, it became apparent that these were too long to erect efficiently...
