In everyone’s life, something motivates them to act a certain way, or relieve stress. With regard to Franz Kafka, a playboy life style caused some of his personal life to be paralleled in his works. His fear of corruption in politics was enough inspiration to write numerous books and short stories. However, his overbearing father is the most apparent influence when he writes. Franz Kafka lived a warped life epitomized by his continual commitment of adultery, sensitivity to the corruption of modern political systems, and deep rooted abuse and rage of his father converge together in his novel, The Trial.
Throughout The Trial, Kafka eludes to many instances where a character cheats on his or her significant other. The first instance occurs when K. arrives in the courtroom for his second hearing and he begins to talk to a woman who interrupted his initial hearing. The woman says, “The Court are woman chasers… even my husband has to get used to it” (Kafka 35). Kafka was a notorious adulterer, and had several short and long-term …show more content…
visits his local church and speaks to the Priest. The Priest tells a story about a doorman and a regular man who wanted access to what was behind the door, law. The doorman refused to open the door because the man was not allowed to access it; his destiny was predetermined. This story is a symbol of K., being the man, and the Court, being the doorman. Realizing his fate, K. almost accepts that he cannot beat the Court because they are flooded with injustice. Kafka, like K., was too aware of the system, and political corruption was the inspiration for his short story Before the Law (Gray 115). Also towards the end of his life, Kafka felt that he was personally lied to regarding the legal system and decided that politicians were the pinnacle of liars (“The Trial” 282). The Court began to have a stronger influence on K.’s life, sending him into fear and

...Kafka’s World W. Clement Stone said, “You are a product of your environment.” This theory can be used to understand the meaning behind Franz Kafka’s nonsensical writings. The politics, literature, and science present during Franz Kafka’s lifetime reflects in his stories’ characters. Kafka grew up in a challenging time period at the end of the nineteenth century, in the middle of Prague. At that moment in history, Prague was a part of the Austrian-Hungary Empire before World War I. “Kafka was born into a middle-class, German-speaking Jewish family (Nervi).” The empire was a mix of ethnicities and languages which led to a confused country. For families like Kafka’s, “they faced many special restrictions: they were not free to choose...

...“. . . All artists’ work is autobiographical. Any writer’s work is a map of their psyche. You can really see what their concerns are, what their obsessions are, and what interests them.” (Kim Addonizio). Franz Kafka was neglected by his family and rejected from society, which in turn influenced many of his works; this may be expressed through the themes and symbols of his short stories. These stories are brought by his political beliefs, his social standing, and his family relationships. Although, not one of Kafka’s renowned works, “A Report for an Academy” is a work that pertains to his life in more ways than one. The story is about an ape’s report, Rotpeter, on how he became human. By the end of the story it is clear that Rotpeter is no...

Exist

...Meaning and Existentialism in My Life - Existentialism is a phiosophy which revolves around the central belief that we create ourselves. External factors are not important. It is the way that we let external factors affect us that determines who we are. As individuals we all have the freedom to choose our own path and that is what life is all about. Along with the freedom of choice comes the responsibilty of one's actions which can make some people anxious but give others meaning to their lives. To overcome this anxiousness and accept responsibilty is to meet the challenges of life and to truly live it.... The dictionary defines existentialism as an individual’s experience filled with isolation in a hostile universe where a human being attempts to find true self and the meaning of life through free will, choice, and personal responsibility. Hamlet is an existentialist character who believes that he is forced to avenge his father’s death and the hatred builds in his heart because of the many betrayals which direct him towards a senseless life and constant thoughts about suicide; this ultimately leads to his demise and he is left with naught.... Magical Realism

...Magical Realism Granville Scott Nelson Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Abstract Magical realism is a Latin American genre in which the author takes an ordinary storyline and inserts an unnatural character or sense of being. This paper will show the difference between magical realism and fantasy or science fiction. Magical Realism From my reading I now understand that magical realism is adding an unrealistic feature or character to an otherwise ordinary story. Magic realism is a term used to describe a mingling of the mundane with the fantastic. “Magical realism is not speculative and does not conduct thought experiments. Instead, it tells its stories from the perspective of people who live in our world and experience a different reality from the one we call objective.” (Rogers, 2002) If an author is telling a familiar story and he adds a twist such as a winged horse or an individual who has been alive for two hundred years, that is an example of magical realism. The difference in magical realism and fantasy is that the story is very natural and true with a surreal object and fantasy is just that, fantasy. The term is best described by Baker in her 1997 writing: While realism itself is a chronically unstable term, realist writing is usually understood to be that which draws on a set of narrative conventions designed to create the illusion that the story on the page is real or true and corresponds in some direct way to the ordinary world of day-to-day life...

...in terms of genre, narration, resolution, aim and in terms of giving agency and power to the reader/ author. The novella can be seen as a parody, a suspense thriller and a detective novel of journalistic trend. The death is the central event but there’s no mystery regarding it rather completely different questions are raised. The aim of this paper is to show that the narrator is distinct from the author but sometimes they intersect. Thus Ronald Barthes statement that the author is dead is not completely true. The authors’ present but it’s not an omnipotent presence, controlling the universal subject (the reader). But this does make the reader all powerful. Barthes implies in his essay Death of the Author. The reader follows the patterns presented by the author but the final impression, overall opinion of the text and the reader’s reaction are not prefigured or controlled by the author. Thus the author and the reader together form the overall value of the text. Raymond Williams explains the formation of the category of Literature, its ever expanding and changing parameters\paradigms are explained in his essay Marxism and Literature. This paper will show the growing value of Latin American Literature, becoming a part of the literary canon, valued as a skillful piece of art. This novella is one of the hallmarks of the Latin American Literature, yet not falling into any one particular generic category, fulfilling all generic expectations simultaneously breaking\contradicting its rules...

Sullivan What is love? After all, it is quite simple. Love is everything which enhances, widens, and enriches our life, in its height and in its depths. Love has as few problems as a motor-car. The only problems are the drivers, the passengers, and the road. —Franz Kafka Introduction In 1949, a ship called the MS Westerdam departed from the coast of Europe, its hundreds of passengers headed toward U.S. shores. Nestled deep in the ship’s cargo compartment, a pair of headlights peeped out of a dark tarp; two wide, open circles leading to the soft curves of what would soon be known as the world’s most recognizable car. Protesters, rebels, dissidents, politicians, businessmen, the world’s corporate elite—all would eventually become entwined in its story. By the end of the 1960s, it would do what no other car had done before: transcend age, class, and country to become a symbol adopted by them all. Americans...
