MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Leila de Lima batted Friday for a review of the Anti-Hazing Law to give it more teeth to prevent killings during initiation rites by members of fraternities.
An urgent review is needed after another fraternity member, 25-year-old Marvin Reglos, died during an alleged fraternity hazing of Lambda Rho Beta group of the San Beda College of Law, she said.
“It’s very unfortunate. Have we not learned our lessons from those past tragedies? There is a need to take a second look at the regulation on these fraternities,” she stressed. According to De Lima, Republic Act No. 8049, the Anti-Hazing Act, should be given more teeth by Congress as effective deterrent to killings during initiation rites.
“I think it’s high time to review the command responsibility of leaders of fraternities on the conduct of initiation rites under the Anti-Hazing Act,” she said. Earlier, De Lima had summoned the Grand Rhoan of the Lambda Rho Beta fraternity to shed light on the incident involving Reglos.
The secretary had asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a separate probe, independent of that being conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP). Earlier, the Supreme Court had affirmed with modification the 2002 decision handed down by the Court of Appeals on the death of Ateneo de Manila University law student Leonardo “Lenny” Villa during the initiation rites by members of the Aguila Legis fraternity in 1991.

When not doing the rounds in the hospital, members of a medical fraternity in UP Manila spend their free time building wheelchairs for poor people with disabilities. Somewhere in UP Diliman, a business fraternity teaches basic stock market analysis and gives free entrepreneurship seminars to students. Meanwhile, in one of Gawad Kalinga’s adopted sites, more than a hundred fraternity members from around twelve different fraternities join hands together to build houses for the poor.

...10 Reasons Why You Should NOT Join a Fraternity by Reggie Paquette · 0 comments If you are not in a fraternity, but are reading this page, chances are you’re considering joining one. While I am an advocate of fraternities, I’m also here to help you make sure joining one is right for you. It wouldn’t be fair if all I talked about was how great they are without pointing out the negatives. So here are 10 reasons why you should not join a fraternity. 1. It might become a top priority in your life, even over family and friends   Fraternities are a great place to learn life, business, and leadership skills you don’t normally learn in class. Depending on how involved you get, will determine how much you learn and take away from it. Some people get so passionate about their fraternity, they don’t even realize it has moved above school, family, and friends on their priority list. You always have to keep in mind that the fraternity, while great, isn’t everything and there are other priorities in life. 2. Big time commitment Weekly fraternity meetings and events can take up a lot of your free time leaving you exhausted. This can directly affect how much time you have left for homework, a job, and other activities. Luckily, if you practice good time management skills, this problem can easily be overcome. Since every fraternity is different, simply ask them what sort of time commitment is necessary to successfully pledge and to be a brother in good standing if and when you are...

...humiliating tricks and ridicule) has always been seen as a secretive campus activity when it comes to fraternities and pledging. As a result, Dr. Mark Taff resorted in his article that, "..a series of 168 cases of injuries and deaths related to fraternity hazing activities...[occurred] in the United States between 1923 and 1982" (2113). Young college men are being hospitalized and even worse, dying, just for a couple of friends that give them a sense of belonging. The major causes of hazing are the students' wanting a sense of belonging in a big college campus, the college's infrequent knowledge of what occurs in fraternities, and the unwillingness of fraternities to change tradition. Since hazing has been around for more than a century, one cannot expect the practice of hazing to stop all together. It will probably take years before hazing perishes from the fraternity scene. Nevertheless, until an end is put to hazing, solutions can be used to make hazing less common, until it no longer exists. These solutions that may be able to put an eventual stop to hazing, in the long run, are better education about fraternity hazing, stricter laws to prevent hazing from occurring, and more intervention from college administrators.Stories of hazing incidents are all too common in the news media today. It would not be out of the ordinary, upon opening the newspaper, to read the testimony of some fraternity pledges "'We were taken to a deserted park and blindfolded...We sat on our knees for an hour...

Fraternities

...Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Fraternity is an organized society of men associated together in companionship dedicated for a certain goal that will benefit its members (Buttermilch, 2014). Fraternities typically have some professional development and service opportunities. It offers support network for college students. Its core elements are brotherhood and social interaction. But the social demands and time commitments of fraternities may be destruction to academic studies and other personal goals of students in school (Kokemuller, 2014). Fraternities and sororities exist outside North America, most notably in the Philippines and in some European countries, but for the most part they are a decidedly American institution. Some types of fraternities emphasize service to the community, professional advancement, or scholastic achievement. Fraternities or sororities often have a so-called hazing. According to graceful1 (2008) in her article “Hazing Issue in Fraternities”, hazing has been around for more than a century, one cannot expect the practice of hazing to stop all together. Possible solutions that may decrease, and eventually put a stop to hazing, include better education about fraternity hazing, and more intervention from college administrators. Through this, fraternities can be restored to their intended purpose: providing moral and social support for college students. According to Melanie Gueco (2010), the Philippines’ very first brotherhood was the...

A Fraternity

...A fraternity (Latin frater : "brother") is a brotherhood, although the term sometimes connotes a distinct or formal organization and sometimes a secret society. A fraternity (or fraternal organization) is an organized society of men associated together in an environment of companionship and brotherhood; dedicated to the intellectual, physical, moral, religious, and/or social development of its members. The Bad Effects of Fraternities Hazing The ritual most people connect with negative outcomes in fraternities is hazing. Hazing refers to the initiation rituals, customs or traditions new pledges must be a part of in order to join. Hazing practices have caused deaths and injuries after fraternity leaders subjected pledges to dangerous tasks like binge drinking, locking them in enclosed spaces or asking them to perform risky physical stunts. Hazing practices are not only dangerous to the individuals who must perform them, but they also compromise the reputation and integrity of the fraternity as a whole. Alcohol Consumption Most college fraternities are also known for being gatekeepers of the alcohol supply on campus. Underage students know they can drink at fraternity parties, which are usually hosted at fraternity housing. By offering underage students access to alcohol, fraternities promote illegal drinking, which often leads to hospitalizations for alcohol poisoning or alcohol-induced injuries. While some fraternities try to keep underage students out of their parties...

...Oughta Know About... SORORITIES/FRATERNITIES 1. Sororities and Fraternities are part of a long held social system on university campuses known as "the Greek System". 2. Sororities are generally for females, and Fraternities generally for males - some "sororities" are actually "female fraternities" as defined by their charter. The difference is negligible today although in the past there were differences. 3. Sexism is rampant in the Greek System; the unofficial attitude that many (not all) fraternities take toward women is notoriously misogynistic and is demonstrated in some of the practices of the groups (from taking pledges to strip clubs to "tagging" female guests at parties to label them as available or off limits to other members) - there are even cases of institutional sexism, some schools have banned Sorority houses as "bawdy house" since all the residents are female and live under an organized title. 4. Hazing in the early 1980's and 1990's gave Fraternities and Sororities a bad name, currently most major Fraternities and Sororities have an active anti-hazing policy in place with penalties ranging from expulsion of individual members to absolute discharge of an entire chapter. 5. Drugs and alcohol are technically banned in all Fraternity and Sorority sponsored functions - but the "Keg Party" is still synonymous with Fraternity on most campuses. 6. You have to "Rush" in order to get a chance to get in to both Fraternities and Sororities; next you must...

Fraternities

...Fraternity is one of the most influential groups that students may encounter during his/her college days. When we hear fraternity, commonly it belongs to men but as the years passed, even women are also being engaged with fraternities or the so called sorority. As an individual, we have this feeling that we need to belong. It is very essential for man to find fulfillment and to have a feeling of acceptance simply because man by nature is a social being. Adolescents were the ones who are always involve in fraternities. Adolescents, as said by many psychologists or theorists, it is the critical stage of life. It is accompanied by many changes that bring crisis and difficulties, and these changes include physical, mental, emotional and social. Physical changes were very visible and very observable thing that takes place during adolescence. But the social aspect of adolescents also changes. It is the time when an individual searches and identifies himself through socialization. The prior environment of every individual is the family. But as we continue to grow, it broadens extending to friends and peers in school. Adolescents begin to search for new friends and start to form or join any group that makes them think of joining one of these. Adjustment in the society is one of the most difficult aspects and includes the members of the opposite sex and adult outside family members and also the school environment. Being placed on a new environment might be difficult and a bit shocking...

Fraternities and Its Effects

...study and definition of terms. Background of the Study Fraternities exist now a day, these days fraternities are common among college students.. The word fraternities came from the Latin word, frater and soror, meaning ‘’brother’’ and ‘’sister ‘’respectively. From the beginning, the norms and values of fraternities were independent of the college environment. Since the founding of Kappa Alpha at Union College (in Schenectady, New York) in 1825 as the oldest secret brotherhood of a social nature, fraternities developed with different personalities and histories on each campus. The trappings of an idealized ancient Greece were added to those of Freemasonry to create secret societies dedicated to bringing together young men who were seeking conviviality. Members historically met weekly in a student dormitory room or rented facility for social and intellectual fellowship. To fight the monotony of mid-nineteenth-century colleges, fraternities institutionalized various escapes of a social nature. In our time many of the students who study at the university are involved in fraternities and became a big problem with the university because many of the students participating here have neglected their studies and the others were lost due to hazing. And most of the students involved in fraternities and unaware of their parents. Based on the researchers’ observations here in DCSP, many students are involved in fraternities. Usually, the first year students are taking a Bachelor...

Fraternity

...7 Disadvantages of Joining a Fraternity The benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority are many, and it's important to realize that Greek life in college has a lot of impressive things to offer. It's also important, however, to realize that there might be some challenges. So just what do you need to be aware of before officially pledging? 1. You might be stereotyped by your fellow students. Even if you had a great impression of fraternities and sororities before you came to college -- and an even better one once you learned about all the great initiatives your school's Greek organizations do -- not all students share the same perception. Ignorant or well-informed, your fellow students might stereotype you once they know you belong to a certain Greek house. And while there might not be much you can do about that, it's important to at least keep in mind. 2. You might be stereotyped by faculty. You might be having an amazing, life-changing experience as a member of your fraternity or sorority. But your professors -- who were, after all, college students themselves once -- might not have had as great of an experience during their own undergraduate years. Or they could have had problems in the past with students from your particular organization. While you are your own person and should be judged accordingly, just be aware of the perceptions some faculty members might have about how you spend your time outside of class. 3. You might be stereotyped by future employers. While your...

...whether or not fraternities and sororities should be co-ed, most people are not sure which side of the argument to choose. Where the argument usually ends, is a question of equality. Although fraternities are troublesome, they should remain single sex because of the lifelong friendships it creates. Generally, many of the actions that take place in Greek life are frowned upon. The biggest problems with Greek life, practically fraternities, is the alcohol and sexual abuse. Fraternities host the parties, which means they are in control of the environment in which they party in and the alcohol. Which can it more dangerous because he men take advantage of the women easier. Many people are making the argument that making Greek Life co-ed would put an end to the problems with it. Some believe that “The presence of women in fraternities would prevent male students from having absolute control over social events and would reduce the risk of sexual assault”(Mott). By making fraternities co-ed, women will gain more power of the party environment and be able to better protect themselves. Some people claim that lifelong relationships are not enough to justify “The harm that segregation by sexes wreaks on young people’s development across both personal and career realms”(Eliot). Spending all of one time with one sex growing up is detrimental to their social behaver, that socializing with the opposite sex will become difficult. Although there are positives for fraternities going co-ed, there...

Fraternity

...study What is Fraternity?-The term fraternity, often colloquially shortened to "frat," generally refers to all-male or mixed-sex student organizations at a college or university; the female-only equivalent is usually called a sorority, a word first used in 1874 at Gamma Phi Beta at Syracuse University. Before this, societies for either gender were called "fraternities." To this day, some women's organizations prefer to be called "women's fraternities." Outside North America, they are also referred to as "student corporations," "academic corporations," or simply "corporations." Fraternities and sororities often use the Greek alphabet to depict their name. There are usually various initiation rituals for new member before he or she is accepted into the organization and entitled to the benefits that come with that particular fraternity or sorority. These can include a close knit group of friends, access to on campus parties, job placements after school with fraternity or sorority alumnus, and residing in the chapter house—housing usually given to them by the college or university. The name of this type of organization implies that the members live and relate to each other as siblings, brothers or sisters, in a familial relationship. Indeed, one's student peers are like one's siblings, and many of these organizations specifically treat new members as younger brothers or sisters. However, in the fraternity or sorority there are no parents. The problems...

...Fraternity Position Statement on Hazing and Educational Initiatives [Adopted December 1980] [Re-Affirmed December 4, 1999] The Issue One of the most controversial legacies left to the modern fraternity or sorority by past generations is the tradition of physical, psychological, or emotional testing of its potential members as a rite of passage to full membership. The historical results have left a blemish on a record of otherwise fundamental successes and outstanding achievements rightfully attributed to American fraternities and sororities. The placing of another in a situation which renders them open to physical or psychological harm is an anathema to any concept of brotherhood or sisterhood. Yet throughout the fraternity and sorority world, hazing arises when reason is clouded by tradition, when loyalty is equated with subservience, and/or where the ideal of brotherhood and sisterhood is misunderstood as something must be proven through the degrading of the individual. AFA Position Statement The Association of Fraternity Advisors solicits the assistance of all inter/national organizations and their officers, college and university administrators, and the undergraduate chapter members and alumni/ae in developing programs and/or policies which are constructive to the fraternity/sorority education of the new members and which forbid the practice of hazing. It is the responsibility of the fraternity and sorority chapter and primarily its leaders, in conjunction...

...ASPECTS OF FRATERNITIES The first thing that enters my mind when I hear the word fraternities are organizations of guys who spend their time drinking beers and having their social gatherings. Well, these accusations have been proven many times on the articles that I have read a long time ago, that most fraternity members, especially on college campuses are seen as drunks who accomplish nothing scholastically or socially. But this impression of mine has changed a little after I have done some researches regarding on the topic. Most people fail to mention the fact that there are some memberships in fraternity who value a life-long experience that help their members develop social organization and study skills and also teach true, everlasting friendship. Fraternities can be organized for many purposes, including university education, working skills, ethics, religion, politics, charity, chivalry, other standards of personal conduct, asceticism service, performing arts, family command of territory and even crime. they were established to nurture pride, leadership, unity and commitment. But the main purpose of a fraternity vanished after the existence of the nowadays fraternities, especially found on college campuses. Results indicated that membership in a fraternity was associated with significantly lower scores on the reading comprehension, mathematics, and critical thinking. This is one of the disadvantages that a member may encounter after he decided to join a fraternity. But the...
