The novel, the narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass was written by Fredrick Douglass himself to help the audience better understand slavery. What I found amazing is that within the novel Fredrick Douglass broke down the essences of slavery by putting in assorted details on how it effect both blacks and whites, Knowledge was the key for freedom and that the use of ignorance as a tool for power is still being used today.
In the context of the novel, the author is trying to tell the reader that white slave owners used ignorance as a tool of slavery. ...Frederick Douglass was born to a slave mother in Maryland and to a white father. After he escaped slavery he worked to free other slaves and fought for the civil rights of recently freed slaves. He was a newspaper editor, lecturer, and author of several books. This essay is a summary and analysis for one of his books that he wrote titled The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave (1841). Frederick Douglass was born in slavery his mother was a slave and his father was a white man. His mistress would often teach him how to read from a newspaper. Douglass liked his mistress because she didn’t treat him as a slave she treats him like a human being and took care of his basic needs. His master didn’t like how the mistress was treating Douglass so he forbids her to ever teach him how to read and to stop treating him with respect. Per her husband’s request the mistress made sure he never saw a newspaper again and he was also being watched carefully compared to the other slaves. There are two forms of Christianity represented in The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and each are described and function differently throughout the text. Based on Douglass’ personal recollections and thoughts in The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, there are both real and false versions of religion and generally, the real or “true” form of Christianity is practiced by himself as well as some whites who are opposed to slavery. The false form of religion, or what the author explained in one of the important quotes in The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, “the hypocritical Christianity of this land” (95) is practiced by whites, most notably Mr. Covey, and is a complete bastardization of the true ideals behind genuine Christian thought. Through his discussions of religion that are interspersed throughout The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the reader gets the sense that slavery and true Christianity are opposing forces and one cannot be present while the other exists. Each period had very distinct characteristics and writers who were able to define the style through their words. The Age of Reason was a time of wit, philosophy, and satire that Johnathan Swift and Voltaire utilized to explain their views on the modern world. Fredrick Douglass, William Wordsworth, and Jean Jacques Rousseau embodied the greatest aspects of the Romanticism era focusing on solitude, nature, and feelings.
