Free Will Vs. Compatabibilism

When one is defining free will its said to be the power to act one’s own discretion. A common argument known as determinism asks how can we make our own choices if all actions are already determined by the events of the past working with laws of nature resulting in a set future. On the other hand compatabilism views that the two in fact can coexist. Compatabibilism brings the two ideas together resulting in the choices we face now are a result of the choices we faced in the past all leading to one outcome in the future. Meaning that our choices represent our free will and the repercussion of those choices is what leads up to the determined future ahead of us.

The different options is what allows a person the freedom of choosing the best option therefore resulting in a determined path. In other words, there are alternative paths an person could choose to take, but the paths available have already been predetermined. With this the person meets the criterion of acting on their own free will, because they could've acted differently.
Frankfurt believes that what separates us from other creatures is our will. though we all have in common what he calls first desires what truly put us above is second order desires. frankfurt uses the example of an unwilling addict. h states that the unwilling addict is not free but i believe otherwise when it comes down to compatabilism. the unwilling addict had a free will before ever taking the drug to turn away from it and walk away. instead he stayed therefore determining his future as an addict and revoking his sense of free will to the drug. frankfurt states that there is free of will and freedom of action. one’s will is not always allowed to be acted on since one tends to restrict thise since a person is morally responsible for their
