In the movie Freedom Writers, Erin Gruwell is challenged with the task of teaching at-risk students and inspiring them to learn tolerance as well as apply themselves. Ms. Gruwell recognizes and applies principles and strategies for communicating effectively in varied practice and learning contexts. During this movie, Ms. Gruwell made learning meaningful and relevant to her students by appreciating their diversity and finding ways to connect their backgrounds to ideas they related to. She encouraged her students and helped them to self-direct their learning. Ms. Gruwell considered where students were coming from, what their lives were …show more content…
Gruwell showed understanding of procedures for designing effective and logical instruction and assessment that was based on appropriate learning goals and objectives. She was effective because she considered her students’ needs when designing lessons and assessments, so that her lessons fit those specific needs, while still meeting the appropriate learning goals and objectives. Mrs. Gruwell was a very clear communicator in this movie. She not only spoke accurately, but she used words and examples that were both relevant and appropriate for her students. When an assignment was given to the class, her explanation of the activity, her expectations, etc. were all very clear. Her objectives for the lessons were clearly stated. Throughout the school year, she became more and more familiar with her students and by doing this, she was able to communicate clearly to …show more content…
Gruwell used inductive teaching strategies by learning about her students’ interests, and then creating different projects where they could gather information and find answers. As her students became more interested in the material that she selected based on their interests and backgrounds, they were more devoted to her assignments, her classroom and learning in general. One approach she used to motivate her students was a field trip to the Anne Frank Museum and a nice dinner out to meet with survivors of the Holocaust. This is a trip that they had to earn. Her students did not just learn material in order to pass a test, but instead experience life-long learned

Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities.
