“From Outside, In” By Barbara Melix Reflection/ Response

In the article “From Outside, In” By Barbara Melix is about the use of different types of language. Melix points out Black English and Standard English are used in different contexts. Melix explains Black English is used as slang and Standard English is more formal or proper. Melix states that when African Americans speak Standard English instead of Black English they tend to be inferior because they feel embarrassed and ashamed to be their real selves. In the article Melix says, “ We were reserved, shy in the presence of those who owned and/or spoke the language.” She is saying that we hold back and are afraid to speak in front of those who spoke Standard English. African Americans are afraid to blurt out or say the wrong thing that will leave them feeling embarrassed or ashamed. As she goes deeper into the text she tells the importance language has on knowledge and power. In the article Melix states, “Speaking Standard English to whites was our way of demonstrating that we knew their language and could use it.” Melix is saying that we use Standard English in a professional environment or when we need to prove to white people we are just as educated as them. After reading I can relate to what Melix is stating in the article “From the Outside, In.” Learning to use language is not an easy task, when you grow up in a community that are comfortable with using one type of language: who don’t take the time or have an interest in breaking down the importance other languages. Everyone has struggled with learning when and where to use Standard English. “My parents never set aside time to drill is in standard English.” I understand what she is saying because my mom taught her children manners; it wasn’t demanded or pressed for us to speak to Standard English. This article made me realize the importance of language and how it can help you in life. It is good to have a good balance where you’re able to switch them up for the right occasion. It is important to know and embrace Standard English because without you will live on the outside of society will hinder your chance in the world. Standard English is not always about showing etiquette or good manners. Standard English is about education and knowledge that can develop reading and writing skills. In the article Melix concludes with “ I came to comprehend more fully the generative power of language. I discovered with the help of some especially sensitive teachers-that through writing one can continually bring new selves into, each with new responsibilities and difficulties, but with also with new possibilities.” Melix is saying that writing allows you to tell the stories of others in your own perspective and the language you use can bring power to their life. I learned that you don’t just use Standard English to represent to white people that you can use or speak their language. It is used to represent power in yourself and in your words. What I will take from this article is that is okay to just feel comfortable with the language that is accepted in your community. However, it is important that you develop a sense of formality with Standard English, because it can open doors and allows opportunities. Standard English is being professional where you can handle business in with class and manners. It is nothing wrong with using slang or Black English. In the world you will come across people in different walks of life. It is so important to know to communicate effectively.
