You take the time to insulate and protect the pipes in your home. But, what about the pipes in your business? Every business has piping with water running through it. And those pipes may be vulnerable to freezing and bursting. If one should burst, it could end up flooding your business, causing thousands in damage and interrupting your business.

How much damage can frozen pipes cause?

You might think a frozen pipe is not a big deal. The weather warms up and the water starts flowing again. The problem is that when water freezes, it expands. Expanding ice can put a lot of internal pressure on the pipe, causing it to burst. And once the pipe bursts the water in the pipe can start flowing everywhere.

In extreme cold conditions, let water drip from faucets. This helps keep pipes from freezing.

Keep the thermostat at a temperature well above freezing. While you don't want high heating bills, there is still a need to prevent pipe freezing.

What do you do if the pipes freeze?

If someone comes in on a freezing morning, and nothing but a trickle is coming from the faucet, you may have a frozen pipe somewhere in the system. You need to take action to get the water flowing again and prevent a pipe burst.

Open up the faucet and let the water continue to flow. Running water helps break up ice.

If you know the location of the freeze, apply heat on the exterior of the pipe. A hair dryer, portable heater, or towels soaked in hot water can do the trick.

If you cannot find the location of the freeze, and the pressure is not increasing, get a plumber out right away.

Check all the faucets in your business to make sure you don't have other frozen pipes.

If you find any water on the floor or under a cabinet, you may have a crack forming in the pipe. Shut off the water and get a plumber out as soon as

...frame to a wooden base. 3• Stand all three tubes on their ends, with the long tubes 5.5 inches apart. Place the short tube in between them and use an arc welder to weld the steel crossbar at their top ends, and the angle iron pieces on both sides of their bottom ends. This will make a rectangular metal frame with the short pipe in the middle of one short side. • 4 File or grind any rough edges from your frame, then paint it. The paint will dampen down any shavings. Once painted, it can be attached to a wooden base by passing screws through the holes in the angle iron piece. • 5 Make the press canister by welding a circular piece cut from your plate steel onto one end of a wide steel tube. Drill holes through the outside of the canister and file down any rough edges. • 6 Form the press piston by cutting another circle of plate steel just small enough to fit inside the press canister. On one side of the disk, weld a short length of pipe with a diameter big enough to fit snugly over the end of the short pipe in the press's frame. • 7 Chop off the bottom third of a round plastic jug and cut a hole in the center of it big enough for the middle pipe in your frame. This will collect the oil as it drips...

...‘Blessing’ By Imtiaz Dharker The skin cracks like a pod. There never is enough water. Imagine the drip of it, the small splash, echo in a tin mug, the voice of a kindly god. Sometimes, the sudden rush of fortune. The municipal pipe bursts, silver crashes to the ground and the flow has found a roar of tongues. From the huts, a congregation: every man woman child for streets around butts in, with pots, brass, copper, aluminum, plastic buckets, frantic hands, And naked children screaming in the liquid sun, their highlights polished to perfection, flashing light, as the blessing sings over their small bones. I want to start off with a question: Blessings: do we take them for granted? Benjamin Franklin once said, “When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water”. This quote reveals the way in which humans take things for granted and then realise its value once it disappears. In this poem, a burst water pipe in the Dharavi slum of India causes great excitement for inhabitants as they are often lacking access to it. A theme that DIRECTLY relates to the text is that of “We do not fully appreciate an item until it becomes rare”. In the arid conditions of Mumbai, water is viewed as a precious commodity and every single drop of the liquid is considered a miraculous blessing. Water is like currency, it’s like money. In a hot country in that kind of climate, it’s like a gift. Dharker uses a combination of literary techniques in order to...

Fauquier Gas Company Case Study

...Supply Management and is responsible for purchasing of materials used in distribution of gas such as pipes, meters, and fittings as well as other various materials. The supply organization falls directly under the vice-president for operations. II. Major Problem Fauquier Gas Company is slated to begin a new project to turn an area once used for agricultural work into a residential and commercial property. This means that new gas lines must be installed. In January, Mr. Murphy overheard Mr. Byers, the project manager, discussing the requirement to add 3.5 miles of new gas lines slated to begin in June with an estimated completion date of September (3 Months). Having worked with the procurement of gas lines before, Mr. Murphy knew that the mills needed substantial lead times in order to accommodate Fauquier Gas Company's timeline. Mr. Byers advised Mr. Murphy the purchase request would be sent as soon as the design engineer was finished with the specifications and the project engineer approved it, both work areas fall under the vice-president of operations. When Mr. Murphy contacted Pat Wilson, the design engineer, he learned that the specifications of the pipes being ordered were changing from past orders. Instead of 3/8" wall thickness they were drawn at 3/4". This was done because the operation of the line would be governed by less stringent specification. The length of the pipes was also extended from 40'(+/-5') to 57' in order to reduce cost of welding. Lastly, the wrapping...

...or obvious solutions (Hammond, Kenney & Raiffa, 2002). Decisions are part of an everyday cycle that everyone has to go through. Furthermore, decision making is a critical skill that is sought-after to lead people towards the right direction. In business, there is a thin line in the thought process between slowing down and being hasty. In this case study, we analyze and get to know the why’s of a work incident. Initially, the obvious symptom was a major water leak from the ceiling onto the unsuspecting business workers. The room darkens, which could mean the power has shorted, and everyone is stuck in the hall way in an uncomfortable situation. What are some reasons that cause a pipe to burst? Well some leading conditions are wear and tear, age, and temperature of the pipes ("Burst water pipes," 2012). Environmental issues are part of an uncertain risk factor that creates a halt in any process. While the water outflow was the main calamity, this event also generated a domino effect to more setbacks. There was also the incident where the water caused the important work papers and electronics on the table to be swamped and maybe even become unsalvageable. Work would be hindered for at least a couple months for reorganization. Budgeting new materials and building cost also comes into effect. At this point, people would feel shock and overwhelmed. Another thought is, what decisions might they have made based on different causes? One reason could have been a miscommunication...

Something Borrowe, Gladwell

...play called "Frozen," written by the British playwright Bryony Lavery. "She said, 'Somehow it reminded me of you. You really ought to see it,'" Lewis recalled. Lewis asked Betty what the play was about, and Betty said that one of the characters was a psychiatrist who studied serial killers. "And I told her, 'I need to see that as much as I need to go to the moon.'" Lewis has studied serial killers for the past twenty-five years. With her collaborator, the neurologist Jonathan Pincus, she has published a great many research papers, showing that serial killers tend to suffer from predictable patterns of psychological, physical, and neurological dysfunction: that they were almost all the victims of harrowing physical and sexual abuse as children, and that almost all of them have suffered some kind of brain injury or mental illness. In 1998, she published a memoir of her life and work entitled "Guilty by Reason of Insanity." She was the last person to visit Ted Bundy before he went to the electric chair. Few people in the world have spent as much time thinking about serial killers as Dorothy Lewis, so when her friend Betty told her that she needed to see "Frozen" it struck her as a busman's holiday. But the calls kept coming. "Frozen" was winning raves on Broadway, and it had been nominated for a Tony. Whenever someone who knew Dorothy Lewis saw it, they would tell her that she really ought to see it, too. In June, she got a call from a woman at the theatre where "Frozen" was playing...

Mission Trip

...Mission San Luis Rey was built on June 13, 1798. It was nicknamed “King of the Missions”. San Luis Rey is the18th mission in the mission chain. It was named after St. Luis the 9th, King of France. San Luis Rey is located in Oceanside, California. It was founded by Father Lasuen. San Luis Rey’s church was very interesting to learn about. The church is the tallest building in the mission. The windows are high to prevent thieves and to make the walls stronger. The church was very important to them because it was a place to pray and to have mass. Mission San Luis Rey has a magnificent bell tower. They bells would be rung to signal morning and night and to announce daily events such as lunch and dinner. They would also be rung for celebrations, warnings, and in times of mourning. There were once was 8 bells in the bell tower but now there are only 4 bells. Kitchens at this mission were not convenient like the ones we have in our homes today. They used the kitchen for cooking and preparing the meals. The indoor kitchen was a smoky room with holes in the top of the roof so the smoke could go out. The Indians at the mission ate atole. They served tortillas at almost every meal. I wish I could have seen the worker’s quarters. Fortunately, I learned that unmarried women and girls 8 years or older lived in a dormitory which was called a momjero. Men lived in similar buildings. The men slept on mats on the floor or on benches. Married workers lived with their...

Preparedness

...As campus police made their rounds early one Saturday morning in 2007 they spotted water flowing out of the Lower Level receiving doors of the Library. The campus police were able to get the water shut off to the library but neglected to inform anyone from the library what had happened. Several hours passed before the damage was discovered by Library staff when they came into work. After some investigation it was discovered that an overhead heating pipe had burst sending water and pieces of ceiling tiles cascading down on several ranges of books on the fourth floor. The water found its way down to the third floor shelves then on down to the lower level of the library’s receiving. Initial action called for plastic sheeting to be placed over the book ranges that were directly under the water pipe and to either side to help prevent more water damage to the books, along with the ranges on the third floor. Phone calls were made to the Head of Circulation along with the Senior Associate (Acting) Dean to get further instructions on what could be done before they were able to get to the library to inspect the damage. The Library staff was told not to do anything more until the acting Dean arrived; even though there was a staff member present who had gone through the disaster class taught by Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS) and knew what needed to be done. A few hours later, the Acting Dean arrived on scene to assess the...

Installing Plumbing

... GS1140 Installing Copper Pipes Problem: Install copper pipes for a new bathroom to run water to the toilette, sink and shower. 1. Prior to building the bathroom make sure that there is adequate accessibility to run copper pipes to the area where the bathroom will be located. 2. After bathroom is built and the configuration of toilette, sink and shower is complete make either a mental or written pattern of how you will connect the pipes. Remember you have hot and cold water. The sink and shower need both while the toilette needs only cold water. 3. Measure distances between toilette, shower and sink to have a general idea of how much copper pipe you will require. Always get about 10 feet extra just in case of a bad measurement or an adjustment in plan. 4. Drill 3 holes in wall near the toilette and sink to accommodate the shut-off valves: toilette gets 1 and sink gets 2. 5. Attach shut-off valves to 9 inch copper pipe segments and install so that valves are inside bathroom and other end is in the crawl space. 6. Attach copper pipe segments to shower on/off fixture so that the ends are in crawl space. 7. Measure copper pipe so that each segment connects with the corresponding hot or cold water shower on/off fixture or shut off valve. Make sure the ends of the pipe segments are clean with a shine. Use fine grained sand paper. Dry fit these segments only. (Dry fit means that no flux...
