As i continue my research in this class I would like to give an example what Avian Ecology is before I start to elaborate on my research. Avian Ecology is a classic study to see if birds segregate themselves by habitat and food. Although there are many field methods available for conducting avian ecological research; bird counts are a good way to estimate population size, detect changes in population size or species diversity, and determine the cause of the changes in environmental or habitat and plenty of data and research is collected. I will also analyze what type of environment theses birds like to be in and how do they function in certain areas as well as the type of food these birds like and dislike. I will be collecting my data and research in Bay St Louis, MS. This area has a lot of birds and a great place for doing research on the studies of birds. Since this time our research has to be in an area in Mississippi instead of being in our own back yards I had go to my dad’s home to observe these different types of birds and to watch their activities. The different types of birds that I have observed are the northern mocking bird, blue jay, a house wren, mourning doves, red bellied wood pecker and a few others just to name a few. As I was starting on my research paper which I was very excited about it because we get to now discover different kind’s bird’s habitat in a different state. I started observing these birds after the Natural Disaster hurricane Isac that hit Louisiana including other states which delayed me a couple of weeks on my research paper until the power was restored. I had to double the time I spent observing the birds as well as waiting about 2-3 weeks for the birds to return after the storm. This was not fun at all. As things turned back to normal in about 2.5 weeks I started to see birds return in the area. I actually didn’t have to buy new bird feeders because of the ones I still had from the last experiment. As follow I set up two bird feeders one in an area of wooded area and another in an area of an open area with little to none traffic. I started off by using the basic bird feeder to see if the birds would like the food or just fool around with it taste it and leave. The birds started flying in one by one sitting on the bird feeder looking around then one flies off and another came and sat at the end of the bird feeder and did the same thing. These birds kept doing this for at least a half an hour. I thought it was very strange because I have never witnessed a bird’s activity like this before but, I am assuming that the birds had to make sure the area that the bird food is in was safe enough to eat and that there was no kind of other birds that would endanger them.

Avian Ecology Theory: Bird Feeder Experiment

For this experiment I used the same bird feeders but to give this experiment an interesting twist to it instead of using the same food I tried two different kinds of foods each week to see if the birds would like the food or dislike the food. I also switched the bird feeders around as well to see how many birds would go to the different feeders. As I started my observation with these birds I started off by using the (generic) brands of food now during my first bird experiment I just started off with a regular brand of bird food. As I continued to observer the birds I noticed that some of the birds like the sparrow, mourning dove did not really care for the generic food because they would constantly push the food out of the bird feeders to get the good pieces of bird food that they like. Now I was saying to myself these are some ungrateful birds I have ever seened to push mostly all of the food out of the feeder to get the certain kind that they only eat. The other birds could care less like the wren, blue j, and the N. mocking bird which I had no idea that I would of come across some of these birds because I’ve never seened them before . I had to actually take picture of the birds from the window because if you get up close to them they like to fly away, to find out what kind of birds these are then look them up on the internet and in the library. This was very interesting to me because I thought that I would encounter the same birds but, I did not and I was amazed that I had new birds to come and test out my experiment. After I had found out each birds name and a little bit about their habitat I started to switch up the food still to see if the birds can continue to live off of the same food even though they do not like it or will they just go away and not return??. As I continued to observe the birds they did not go away they just kept pushing the food out knowing that I was going to refill it until I get a better brand of bird food. The next week I had brought what I call “the good stuff” it’s typically the type of bird food that any type of bird likes, the birds ate up all of the bird food and were crowded around that one feeder fighting and pushing one another to get the last scraps. I had to refill the bird feeder nearest to my home at least several times a day. The only problem that I had with the specific kind of food is when I went to buy it in Wal-Mart there is only like a medium sized bag of it and it cost almost five dollars but with the generic bag of food I can buy a big bag and still pay less than five dollars just a thought how the different sizes of the bags. As I continued to feed these expensive birds they were only coming to the feeder nearest to my home not by the woods and they would only be out at 6:30a-7:00p and would go away for the rest of the evening until the next morning. I observed the birds for at least 3-4 weeks to see if anything different was going to happen but, nothing did the birds remained the same and ate the same expensive food.

Hypothesis

After doing much research and clarification on Avian Ecology theory, and soaking in the knowledge that I have learned from this experiment; I have realized that the majority of the birds in bird feeder #1 nearest to my home prefer the name brand instead of generic bird food. The birds also were very active and playful at feeder one. Feeder #2 nearest to the woods has little to none of the action and the food was barely touched but the birds did fish through the food and sat on the bird feeder for quite sometimes unless the squirrels were around or some other type of animal that might make them seem in danger. It was best that I used two different types of bird food and two different feeders to get an accurate conclusion.

Observation and Data Collection

As I mentioned before in my Hypothesis the birds preferred the name brand food and the area where it is much safer less movement and activity from other animals (excluding other birds) the other birds took to the feeder nearest to my home and really did not care for the feeder that was nearest to the woods. The birds preferred feeder #1 over feeder #2. Feeder #1 had a better variety of food and a lot of action on the feeder.

Results and Conclusion

As I have stated before the birds preferred feeder #1 instead of feeder # 2. The reason for this is because the feeder that was the closest to my home had most of the action from the birds because of the location and the food that the birds liked the most. The birds in feeder #2 were very picky about the selected choice of food that was given and only fished through certain parts that were their favorite. The birds to me were very pick and somewhat constantly fought over the name brand of food a lot. The birds also invited other birds to come and test out the area before they actually called other birds to come and join the feast.

Role of a Manager

...Manager’s are integral in the proper functioning of a business. Even though the type of a business will determine varying roles and functions of a manager, all managers have the same fundamental functions that ensure the business runs as efficiently as possible. There are four areas that a manager deals with in the functional areas of any business. These four areas are controlling, leading, organizing, and planning.( Bateman ) It is important to realize that the role of control for a manager is not negative in nature. In the functional areas of a business, control means that a manager is making sure that all areas from work goals to employees are stabilized. This means that a manager establishes clear guidelines for all employees to ensure that productivity occurs. The manager’s role with control means directing and monitoring the progress of all employees. This is done, in part, by controlling the environment of the company, making sure that the work environment is conducive to achieving work established goals and deadlines. Control also means monitoring both internal and external elements that may impede the progress of the employees. One of the most important roles of a manager within the functional areas of a business is with leadership. Analyzing the Role of a Manager Within the Functional Areas of Business

...Analyzing the Role of a Manager Within the Functional Areas of Business Kevin Woodbridge Management 512 02/03/2015 William Wider Analyzing the Role of a Manager Within the Functional Areas of Business A manager heading an organization can oversee a plethora of responsibilities, in which most of those duties are directorial in essence. In small corporations, the role of a manager is more so handy in all aspects of the company and may be a lot more hands on. However, in large businesses, there are various degrees of specific supervisory duties within each business function. Nevertheless, the prime responsibility for all managers is business growth and development. If an organization is coming up short of its goals as an operation, it is the manager’s role to adjust accordingly to ensure that everything is back on course. Every corporation operates by having various business functions where duties and responsibilities are handled by employees. These functional areas of a business can include Human Resource, Accounting/Finance, Legal, Information Technology, etc. Functional managers lead these divisions, in which they have a role and responsibility to strategize, shape, direct and oversee divisions to reach department objectives, which then leads organizational objectives (Bansal, 2014). “Manager is someone who uses authority and reason for efficient and effective problem solving and to mobilize, coordinate, and control organizational resources by the use...

...accounting management are two additional areas that help to provide the financial monitoring of the business. These two areas are separate, but rely heavily on each other to monitor expenses, costs, and determine the profitability of the business. According to Pope (2010), “accounting academics who have successfully taken their knowledge into the real world often play important roles in helping financial statement users in the investment management and investment banking communities to interpret the accounting information that finds its way onto the large and expensive databases that help drive many investment decision models” (p.89). Budgetary considerations and revenue monitoring feed directly into the statistics that must be monitored to assure success. Economics and marketing management areas monitor the needs of the business and the image of the company. The economics monitors the supply and demand of the goods and services and assures that prices remain both competitive and in line with the public needs to find that fine line between too high and too low. Marketing helps to target the individuals and groups appropriately for advertisement and assure response to yield the desired image and goals.
