Function of School

According to McNergney and Herbert (2001)

1. The intellectual purposes of schooling include the following; to teach basic cognitive skills such as reading writing, and mathematics; to transmit specific knowledge. 2. The political purposes of schooling are to inculcate allegiance to the existing political order (patriotism); to prepare citizens who will participate in the political order; to help assimilate diverse cultural groups into a common political order; and to teach children the basic laws of society. 3. The social purposes of schooling are to socialize children into the various roles, behaviors, and values of the society. This process, referred to by sociologists as socialization, is a key ingredient in the stability of any society; it enables members to help solve social problems; and by participating in socialization, schools work along with other institutions such as the family and the church, to ensure social cohesion. 4. The economic purposes of schooling are to prepare students for their later occupational roles and to select, train, and allocate individuals into the division of labor. Whereas the degree to which schools directly prepare students for work vanes from society to society most schools have at least an indirect role in this process.

By this I mean, if it were to be awarded in the colour brass it would function as an achievement award and if it was for progress award it would be in the colour Nickel silver. I have used these two colours because they are identical to the colours used in any competition: gold and silver, so that the students will appreciate it more. This award also functions as a picture in the spherical acrylic so that when the picture is taken of the student receiving the award they can print at a size of 3x4. And including this picture frame enables the award winner to remember the time in which they won it. Also according to my design influences it does not offend anyone because there are no crosses on it referencing a religion that can offend other people with different ethnicities.
