“Does my Head Look Big in This” and “Funny in Farsi,” gives reader a glimpse into the real world of first and second generation Islamic Immigrants. DMHLBIT describes a Muslim Australian teens’ journey from childhood to adulthood. The plot begins when Eleventh grader, Randa, begins wearing the hijab full-time and follows the backlash from her family, school and crush. FIF is coming of age memoir that follows Fizoozeh Dumas in her journey from second grade immigrant into her interracial marriage. The memoir is written as short stories; these give reader a glimpse into the everyday struggles and joys of being a first generation immigrant. In FIF, Firoozah Story shows her physical journey from childhood into her marriage. While studding in France, Firoozah ends the chapter by a reflection on summer spent there. “Against this backdrop of teenage angst, there would have to be a symbol of teenage angst, a representation of confidence that comes with the intellectual and spiritual growth. She explains how the summer had not been the trandformation that she had hoped for. Her growth though out the books has been mirrored though the events happening around her. This quote symbolisms her disappointment with the reality of the termination of her childhood. In contrast, DMHLIT shows amal emotionally growing up, and embracing the change for good. “Life isn’t like the movies. People don’t just change overnight. People don’t go from arrogant to self-righteous to ashamed and remorseful. They don’t suddenly give in when they’ve spent years taking out.
