So what exactly is nanotechnology? With that question there is a lot of answers. The definition of nanotechnology is, “the branch of engineering that deals with things smaller than 100 nanometers (especially with the manipulation of individual molecules)”Nanotechnology will allow the construction of smaller circuits and computers. Smaller circuits will run faster enabling much faster computer speeds, and will give them much greater lives as well. That means a laptops efficiency could be increased by millions, living longer and working faster which would be more value for the money that you pay. I found an article on the internet from Royal society of chemistry that talks how nanotechnology will actually have a good impact on the environment in the future. It says “For the environment and energy, nanotechnology will have a significant impact. For instance, nanometer sized solar cells could be developed to provide much of the energy needed around the world and nanomaterial’s will increase the efficiency of fuel cells and batteries. I the future nanotechnology will be used to tackle environmental problems, new “green” processing technologies will minimize the generation of undesirable by-product effluent by curbing emissions.” Nanotechnology is a relatively new and emerging field of science, it was first alluded in 1959, but it remained largely theoretical until the 1980s. Inventing of the scanning tunneling microscope or STM allowed the first manipulation of individual atoms. In 1989 a major breakthrough came on the scene by IBM, they spelled out there corporate logo using just 35 atoms.
This chart that I got off of futuretimeline.net shows just how fast nanotechnology has grown in 44 years, and the trend they expect to see as it continues to grow. It’s amazing how fast it looks like it will grow, and how much we will be using it. In my own words, if I am reading everything right, I see nanotechnology as a science to make things smaller. In this case I can only imagine how big it is going to be in the future. The main thing I could see it being big in would be technology, like computers, and video game systems. They could put so much memory in one tiny chip. On futureblogger.com an article on their states “Imagine a world with billions of desktop-size machines that can create almost anything – clothing, furniture, electronics and more, in just minutes! Today, such services are not available but one day soon a small nano-factory will sit on your kitchen counter and let you order nearly anything you desire at little or no cost.” According to futurist Ray Kurzweil, nano – factories could be providing you and your family with meals, medicines, and most essentials by as early as mid-2020s. Back to nanotechnology in PCs. I read a book titled “Futures of Nanotechnology”, in this book they talked about something called a nano-chip. Shrinking transistor size will make the chips smaller, and faster. One benefit of packing transistors closer together is that the electronic pulses take less time to travel between transistors, this will increase the overall speed of the process. (Futures of Nanotechnology Crishelle Holdago). With medical nanotechnology, treatment would be more efficient and precise. Instead of opening the whole body area for surgical purposes, a microscopic nanotool would spare the patient from bloody and risky surgical process. With nanotechnology in the medical field, treatment would be precise, eliminating trial-and-error drug prescription. With a single laboratory test and highly technical computers, a detailed image of the body’s system and processes can be automatically spotted including the cause of the disease and its possible treatment. With nanotechnology in the fields of medicine, medical malpractice would be eliminated and the side effects of taking medicines out of sheer guessing from the physicians would be avoided. Medical nanotechnology can largely contribute to genetic therapy and improvement. Diseases can be easily treated if approached at the genetic level. So instead of treating diseases based on the symptoms, nanotechnology will help medical practitioners treat the problem by looking at the root cause. (Basics of medical Nanotechnology, nanoglass.com). I didn’t even know what nanotechnology was until I did this paper. It is at it sounds though, Nano means little, and technology means, well it just means technology. So if you put those 2 things together that’s what you get. Technology that has been shrunk down to as small as it can be. It is amazing how much you can do when you use nanotechnology, you have to think like this. If you can shrink down a chip in a PC and make it twice as small then you will be able to fit 2 of them or more in there. In return you are getting double the speed, at least!! So, that is nanotechnology broke down, I could have put much more, but it would be a lot of typing and would honestly get boring
