Article Title: “Knowledge management practices in healthcare services”
Myllarniemi, J., Laihonen, H., Karppinen, H., & Seppanen, K. (November 01, 2012). Knowledge management practices in healthcare services. Measuring Business Excellence, 16, 4, 54-65.
Summarization:
The purpose of the study is to develop understanding about the role of information and knowledge in healthcare processes and thereby create a basis for practices that would better support the actual service provision. This paper seeks to model and analyze the service processes of two case settings: laboratory and radiology units of a Finnish regional healthcare system. Finnish healthcare is facing many challenges that many other healthcare providers are experiencing today. They are trying to decrease costs but continue to improve their performance especially when the large population of patients is elderly. This article reflects on how important it utilizes knowledge resources and has active knowledge sharing among management. The paper also expresses the need for comprehensive KM initiatives instead of just transferring information. The paper services to answer two research questions, “What kind of challenges and problems are related to the existing knowledge practices and processes?” and “how could the existing knowledge processes and practices be developed in order to support service provision better?” I agree with the paper in that they state “Knowledge management aims to improve organizations effectiveness and performance by stressing the importance of knowledge creation, development, organization, and finally, leveraging”. This is a great key point and highlights the true meaning behind knowledge management. Today in healthcare everything revolves around health information systems. It is key to a healthcare practices success and federal government even now mandates doctor’s offices to have some type of health information system, and to record certain patient information or else the doctors will be penalized. I agree with Berg ( 2004), that health information management deals with the challenge of integrating health information systems in healthcare work. Healthcare facilities have been dealing with this challenge in which there is many different ways to approach the task. It is management’s job to come up with a efficient way to collect all the data and maintain a good work flow. According to Moss (1999), knowledge management is a term of understanding, defining and utilizing available knowledge provides the decision makers a useful tool for managing their organizations”. I also agree with the article that at the organizational levels both qualitative and quantitative information is needed to make decisions.
The second part of the paper discusses the empirical part of the paper in which the authors show relationships between those who provide service and those who purchase the service. Both service providers in the paper are from Finland. According to the article “based on the empirical data, several so called use cases were recognized, which refers to a certain situation where a clinician utilizes knowledge provided by the surrounding healthcare system”. The analysis showed that there were quite a few cases that were identified where information and KM had been the result of some change in the way the service process was executed. A weakness that I believe this study had is that they analyzed 32 cases. I think they needed to analyze more cases to get a more accurate result. Another idea would have been to analyze 30 cases and then once again 6 months later and compare the results. There are different decision-making situations in operative healthcare in which were identified in this article. In summary this article shows how important it is to develop knowledge processes and practices in healthcare organizations to be successful and efficient. It shed importance on knowledge bases value creation for healthcare management. I agree that it is important to recognize the importance of a multiple knowledge resources that are used in healthcare processes.

...Gaby Rodriguez was a senior in high school and all was going well, she was smart, pretty, had a boyfriend, all was good. All was good but one thing, a stereotype. This stereotype was she was bound to be pregnant before she was out of high school, just like her mother, sisters, and her brother getting a girl pregnant before they were out of high school. “People always seemed to expect that I'd follow the same path just because I'm Latina and a part of this family” (Rodriguez). All things Gaby wanted to prove wrong, but things don’t go as planned. After thinking about it Gaby realized that this is not all a bad thing and she wanted to challenge the idea that a stereotype has to define your future or if it does not. The Pregnancy Project

...Memoir, by Gaby Rodriguez and …. This is the story of a young Hispanic girl who decided that for her senior project she would fake a pregnancy. Gaby came from a family of four brothers and three sisters being raised in a single parent family. Gaby’s mom worked hard at three different jobs to support her children. She had Gaby when she was 35. Gaby knew what her mom had went through when she had her first child at 15 and she knew that she did not want that for herself. After much contemplation Gaby decided that for her senior project she would fake a pregnancy. She talked to her mother and enlisted her support and that was easy. Now she had to get her boyfriend’s support and after that the most difficult task was to get permission from the senior board and have the school district superintendent sign off on the project. Once all that was done she could begin her project. As the story continues she gets help from her doctor and the nurse in the local clinic. They were totally in favor of her project. Gaby has carefully planned her project and she begins to drop hints that she might be pregnant to her peers. At first they are in shock and disbelief that Gaby might be pregnant. American Music Film

...Mid-term Paper October 19 2012 Backstage Musical Evolution The backstage musical has been around for quite some time. From Busby Berkeley and Fred Astaire to more modern like Arthur Freed and Judy Garland, the backstage musical genre will always have a place in Hollywood history. What makes the backstage musical different from the typical musical is that the plot usually revolved around the theater and therefore can lead to natural breaks into song and dance. For example in Easter Parade Fred Astaire says that he can get anyone to become a great dancing partner, therefore Fred and his dancing partner, Judy Garland can break out in dance and the logic would not be questioned. This specific type of musical is very important in the history of American musicals. Like everything else in life, things change and mature and this form of musical is no exception to this. A lot of the movies in this genre started like a straight forward love story with singing and dancing but as time went on the plots for more complicated and mature. They also experimented with different idea and themes as time went on. As time went on the backstage musical changed. While there was a lot of change, one interesting thing that doesn't really change are the people behind these movies. Fred Astaire, Busby Berkeley, Judy Garland, Arthur Freed, and many more seem to have been the go to people for these type of movies. Understandably, they are all unbelievably talented and great at what they...

Business Research Ethics

...been a highly debated and controversial topic. More recently, larger corporations have come into the spotlight and under scrutiny about their methodical ethics. While ethics is a concern in the general operations of a business, it should also be a major concern about ethics in the research of, for, or conducted by a business. Researchers have an important responsibility to practice ethical behavior, especially where their research results can have major impact. Clinical research will always have an ongoing and widespread impact because of the value of results for doctors and patients alike, as well as, the ongoing search for cures to ailments. In “Misleading Reporting of Research Results: A Widespread Problem”, Alan R. Gaby M.D. discusses the occurrences of skewing research results. While no specific companies or trials are mentioned in the article in regards to unethical business research, it does provide an overview of unethical research reporting in clinical research cases. ...Gabriella Boix Español 203 Mss. Gubuny The movie, La Historia Oficial successfully demonstrates the result of the dictatorship that lasted from 1973-1986. The movie was based off the life of a school teacher named Alicia, who has an illegally adopted child. Throughout the movie Alicia puts together the pieces that leads her to determine that her daughter is in fact a kidnapped child. I believe it was right of Alicia to look into the past of her child, to determine where she came from. I also believe that Roberto is to blame for multiple occurrences in the movie. The main one being the illegal adoption of his daughter Gaby, but Alicia’s friend Ana returns from exile and confronts Roberto about his involvement in her arrest. Even Roberto’s father and brother call him out on the injustice of his practice. It would be difficult to know what I would do in that situation, but if I were Alicia I would try to do the right thing and keep in contact with Gaby’s abuelita. I do believe that Roberto had to do with the illegal adoption. What confuses me is why Alicia waited until her daughters fifth birthday to question where she came from. She should have wondered these things initially. She didn’t question how her husband got a baby with no questions asked, it seems to me like it would have been fishy from the very beginning. This movie was interesting because it didn’t show the side of the victim. Instead it focused on the lives of a family that was built on the forced separation...

The Negative Impact of Hand-Held Technology on Teens

...Thesis: Measures should be taken by parents, teachers and adults to reduce the usage of hand-held technologies, due to its negative impact on teenagers. There are many negative impacts of technologies such as iPod’s and Smartphone’s. Such as the distraction it causes when in school because of the instant network of communication and entertainment it provides, and the dangers reported when “texting and driving”. Heath Wright reported that “Gaby Badre, M.D., conducted research on the effects of cell phone usage on sleep patterns in teens. Badre found that teens with excessive cell phone habits exhibit chronic restlessness, a reliance on stimulating drinks, difficulty falling asleep at night, disrupted sleep and an inclination toward fatigue and stress.”(Wright, 2010). There are also negative effects caused by social media sites. Most cellular products today have the option of going on the internet on your phone. In turn most teens are susceptible to the dangers that social networking presents. Such as encouraging the use of poor grammar and spelling, the threat of online predators and providing information that would increases the risk of identity theft. Cyber Bullying also stems from the misuse of the technology. In conclusion, adults must be vigilant with what teens and children do on their phones. Steps that can be taken are always being cautious of what your teens do on their smart phones. Monitor the daily activities...

Obesity and High Fructose Corn Syrup

...High Fructose Corn Syrup and Obesity DeVry University February 20, 2013 In the age of high fructose corn syrup and processed foods, obesity is rampant in the United States of America. More than one-third of adults and seventeen percent of children suffer from obesity. Since the 1960’s the rate of obesity has more than doubled. Many think that this is directly related to America’s growing consumption of high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup has made people obese and unhealthy, but we can change this by better educating children on proper nutrition and by changing our eating habits. High fructose corn syrup was first created in Japan in the late 1960’s. By the 1970’s the process had been perfected and was introduced to the public market. High fructose corn syrup is fifty-five percent fructose and forty-five percent glucose, and tastes exactly like sucrose (sugar). (Pollan p.89) Like everything else that we eat, in moderation fructose and glucose (high fructose corn syrup) may not be considered that bad for you. However, with the amount of processed foods and beverages that Americans consume it has become nearly impossible to avoid the overeating of high fructose corn syrup. So how exactly does high fructose corn syrup affect the body? We know that high fructose corn syrup is made up of fifty-five percent fructose and forty-five percent glucose. Glucose is a form of energy that is used by just about every part of the body. Glucose gives...

Chinese Lunar Lantern Festival

...Yusheng Chen #13 Professor Barber BC 230 October 21, 2015 My Favorite Holiday China is an old country which has five thousands years history, so there are lots of holidays in China. My favorite Chinese holiday is the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in lunar calendar. Actually, Lantern Festival is not a real name in its Chinese meaning, because people can not translate that festival’s name correctly due to different culture and language. My favorite festival is the Lantern Festival because there is much fun in the Lantern Festival. In China, we call the Lantern Festival as “Yuan-Xiao Festival”. The reason why Chinese people made this name is that Chinese people have a special calendar called lunar calendar which is based on cycles of lunar phases, and it’s different from the Gregorian calendar which we use now. Thus, the Chinese character “Yuan month” means the first month in lunar calendar, and “Xiao” means the night. So this is what the festival’s name should really be. There are several versions story about the origin of the Lantern Festival, but no one knows which one is true. The most plausible origin states that the Lantern Festival is from Buddhism, and it began from Han dynasty. The emperor Ming of Han dynasty believed Buddhism, and he knew there was some tradition that Buddhists lighted lanterns to show their respect to Buddha’s relics in every fifteenth of lunar January. So the emperor Ming let...
