Analysis of Students’ Performance in Junior Secondary School Mathematics Examination in Bayelsa State of Nigeria The finding of this study showed that students’ performance in 2006 JSS Mathematics test was high. Comparing the hypothetical pass mark of 20.00 with the students’ mean score of 28.59 this indicated that the students performed very well. This result is in agreement with Linn (1965), Anderson (1942) and Akpan (1989) who reported that if an examiner has a favourable attitude towards a particular subject, then this will reflect in his performance in that subject. This is to say that since mathematics has been made compulsory and a pre-requisite for admission into the senior secondary, hence the students have developed a favourable attitude towards the subject resulting in their high performance. On whether performance is influenced by sex, the result showed that male students obtained higher mean score than the females with the calculated t-value significant. Many sociologists would agree school processes such as labelling have an effect on a child’s educational achievement. However there are many other school processes that cause underachievement. To label someone is to attach a meaning or definition to them. For example, teachers may label a student as smart, thick, hardworking or troublemaker. Studies have shown that teachers often attach such labels regardless of the pupil’s actual ability or attitude. Instead they label pupils on the basis of stereotyped assumptions about their class background. Becker carried out an important study of labelling. He carried out interviews with 60 Chicago high school teachers. His findings were that they judged pupils according to how closely they fitted an image of the ‘ideal pupil’. Pupils work, conduct and appearance were key factors influencing teacher’s judgments. Middle class children were seen as the closest to ideal by teachers however lower working class children were seen as furthest away from it because they regarded them as badly behaved. Cicourel and Kitsuse’s study of educational councilors in an American high school shows how such labelling can disadvantage working class students. I think I scored higher on these areas because I have always been a very independent learner. In school and in life if I did not know how to do something I have almost always been able to figure it out with little to no help. I was not surprised at all that I scored higher on these then other areas. I am the type of person that likes to learn something new every day. I do not require other people being on me about doing the things I need and want to do. The areas that I scored the lowest on were employing interdependence, with a 52, gaining self-awearness, and mastering self-management, both with scores of 67. I don't think a 67 is really that low but they could be better. I think I scored lower on employing interdependence because like I said before I have almost always been able to figure things out with little to no help from others. Growing up I did not really have a support group, that had the abilities to help me. My mother grew up with dyslexia, but graduated from high school with help from her friends and her mother. Most studies of this sort have reached conclusions along the lines of: “We estimate that, on average, a student who attended an Independent school is 6.9% to 5.4% less likely to be awarded a ‘good’ degree compared to a student who attended an LEA (state-sector) school, ceteris paribus” (Naylor and Smith, 2005). That students from the maintained sector out-perform their privately educated peers in higher education has become the received wisdom, and it is widely assumed that this must be the case at all UK universities. Hoare and Johnson (2011) found it to be the case at the University of Bristol. This study examines whether it is the case at the University of Cambridge. Methodology This study considers the academic performance at Cambridge of undergraduates educated at UK schools and colleges.
