When a person conducts a behavior that either is positive or negative harmful or beneficial for them they use their own brain to judge weather that behavior is the appropriate action or not. In the philosophical world of question and counter, british philosopher Galen strawson points out a theory. The strawson's theory of the impossibility of moral responsibility is a controversial topic. He stated that a person is not in control and should not be blamed for his/her actions. Claiming people may have many excuses as why they should not be blamed such as exemptions that show an agent is incapacitated for their interpersonal behaviors in their surroundings.

For this they may say “she's only a child” or “it was an accident” basically an excuse …show more content…
For one to be blamed they have to maintain a crucial mental condition that they have no control over. However this comes back to the same factor even though a person may have this mental condition they are still responsible for the damage they make. For example in a mental asylum a man starts breaking all the windows randomly, it is not anyone else only he can be blamed even if it's the cause of his sickness it was still him who caused this to happen. He also states that its not deniable that one is born in a certain way due to their hereditary background and previous experiences. How can a normal person not be accountable for his/her actions when they are the ones that control their mind and …show more content…
Free will and moral responsibility of the basic argument is a natural place to start. Strawson contradicts the statement “normal adult beings are are responsible for their personality”. Well this statement may have a few angles because it is not the person that made his or her personality that's how they were brought up but a person sure does have the capability of changing the way they are for the better, that which can be put on oneself to be responsible. For example a bullys personality is usually mean, aggressive and they tend to make other people feel lower than them, however if one day the bully realizes his or her mistake and they suddenly start to be a nicer person that is possible, in that case they are changing their personality for the better. It is surely true that “a man must make or have made himself into whatever in good or evil in a moral sense he is to become”. These effects come straight from the persons free choice and will which allowed them to choose which path they want to choose. It doesn't make sense how strawson can believe that it's impossible to have moral responsibility because everyone is brought up either in a good upbringing or bad but as they grow older every person should have a sense of common sense at least for their personal benefit and not for their

Galen Strawson's Analysis

...In Galen Strawson’s piece “The Impossibility of Moral Responsibility”, he explores the idea of moral responsibility and provides his reasons for believing that moral responsibility does not exist. He makes the basic argument which states that one cannot be morally responsible for any of their actions because nothing can be the cause of itself, and to be morally responsible one would have to be the cause of their own actions. Essentially, he is arguing that humans are not responsible for their psychological makeup, and therefore cannot be held morally responsible for their actions. He then advances this basic argument to the following argument: (P1) For one to be held morally responsible, they must be responsible for their own personality. (P2) No one can be held responsible for who they are. (C) Therefore, no one can be held morally responsible for their actions because they lacked the choice of personality. I agree with Strawson’s argument to a moderate...
