“The Pie” Essay Sin can take over someone’s life and can change their perspective of things. Those who succumb to sin will regret it later in life. In an excerpt from his autobiographical narrative, A Summer Life, Gary Soto describes his first memory of sinning and the guilt associated with the sin through the use of a light tone and biblical allusion, repetition, and imagery. Soto begins his story by detailing the event of stealing a pie at the age of six. He uses biblical allusion and imagery to highlight his struggle with sin. At the beginning, the image of, “the shadow of angels…” depicts a sense of ignorance because the reader sees that Soto forgot about angels and his religion as he thought about which pie to steal. Soto uses repetition and imagery to convey this feeling of remorse for his actions. At first, the image of, “the pie tin [glaring] at me,” depicts a sense of an uneasy feeling because the reader sees that the word glare conveys a guilty feeling. This is significant because as Soto sat on the curb looking at the empty pie tin, he realizes what he did and stars to feel guilty and remorseful. Additionally, the repetition of Soto saying everyone knew functions to describe his paranoid feeling after eating the pie. This structure supports the author’s purpose to show that he felt guilty for stealing and eating the pie. Lastly, the image of, “listening to the howling sound of plumbing,” depicts a sense of eeriness because the reader sees that Soto thinks the howling is God judging him for what he did. This is significant because it shows the extent of how guilty Soto is for eating the stolen pie. The imagery and repetition Soto uses serves the purpose of showing his guilt and remorse. Through this excerpt of Gary Soto’s narrative, he used biblical allusion, imagery, and repetition to describe an early memory of sinning by stealing a pie and how he regretted it later. Adult Soto realized his sin and by using a light tone he shares his story of greed, guilt, and struggles he had with

Gary Soto The Pie Analysis

...As a child, a bored Gary Soto finds himself either watching shadows flopping on the back yard grass or crawling underneath his house looking for something to do. His young self, Soto assumes that he has known enough about what was morally right and wrong, yet the tempting quality of a pie pressures him into stealing it from a grocer regardless. Gary Soto recreates the experience of his guilty six-year-old self through the use of word choice and biblical allusions. Soto utilizes diction both specifically pertaining to the bible or simply ones that involve what he has undertaken from his actions, which interpret into his overall feelings of remorse after stealing the apple pie caused from boredom. Gary Soto The Pie Analysis

...The pie by Gary Soto essay Do you remember as a child stealing another's kid snack just because it seemed tasty? And then when the teacher told you to justify your actions you started to cry and felt like a piece of crap because you knew what you did was sinful and against your core values. This what Gary Soto did when he stole the pie from the German market and feels bad because he is over the top religious? Gary recreates the moment of his guilty six-year self, stealing the pie and become a sinner by using deep imagery, sharp word choice and biblical allusions that make sense. The story would be bland and would not have a point if Gary did not include these Soto’s skill of recreating the moment, using biblical allusions, makes its appearance...

'The Rhetorical Analysis Of Gary Soto's Essay'

...Rhetorical Analysis of Gary Soto Essay” In his autobiographical narrative, Gary Soto recreates an experience with his guilty six-year-old self. Ultimately, he shares a story with his audience about how his younger self lost his innocence through stealing a pie. Through the effective use of rhetorical devices, Gary Soto achieves his purpose. Pacing was one of the most useful rhetorical strategies used in his essay. In the beginning of the narrative, a slow pace was implied as Soto explained his “boredom” as he sat “underneath the house… looking for something to do”. He then felt anxious as the “juice of guilt” began to “[wet his] underarms” while he tried to decide which pie to steal. The pace drops to a moderate level after Soto is relieved that he was able to steal the pie and “no one saw” him do so. Soto’s relief was short lived as he went into a panic assuming that his neighbors were...

Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...

...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...

In the end, we are our choices. —Jeff Bezos, commencement speech at Princeton University, May 30, 2010 Prologue In the early 1970s, an industrious advertising executive named Julie Ray became fascinated with an unconventional public-school program for gifted children in Houston, Texas. Her son was among the first students enrolled in what would later be called the Vanguard program, which stoked creativity and independence in its students and nurtured expansive, outside-the-box thinking. Ray grew so enamored with the curriculum and the community of enthusiastic teachers and parents that she set out to research similar schools around the state with an eye toward writing a book about...
