Assignment 5-1

The two business leaders that I will be comparing are Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. These guys are the leaders of the Information Technology Industry who have revolutionized the Information Technology world with their great thinking and innovation. As far as their education is concerned they both don’t have a good record, they both were the dropouts. As I am doing the comparative analysis of each of their appropriate skills, I will be considering the differences and similarities between Bill Gates of Microsoft and Steve Jobs of Apple Computer, two of the most successful Business Leaders in the world of personal computing. Both started their careers almost at the same time and within the same industry. They are without a doubt two of the most successful and wealthy men in the PC industry. Steve Jobs is a true creative thinker and technological leader while Bill Gates is a brilliant businessmen and true genius. The competition and rivalry between Gates and Jobs has become one of the most enduring and fascinating in the American business industry. In the end both men are well-known and idolized by many. Both Bill Gates and Steve jobs are extremely good at taking in good ideas, and developing them and making them into a successful product. This mostly because they are not at all afraid of taking any risks and try very hard even if they do not always get it right the first time. An example for this would be MS-DOS for Microsoft and an example for apple would be The Lisa and the Page Maker. As far as their management style is concerned Steve Jobs was having an aggressive and demanding personality and is known to be aggressive. Aspirations of Jobs are to position Apple and its products at the forefront in the IT Industry. He wants to be a trend setter in terms of innovation and style. “Innovation distinguishes between a leader

Mac vs Pc

...Mac vs. PC Bill Gates: “There may be a few….similarities.” Steve Jobs: “Similarities? Similarities? Try theft.” (from “Pirates of Silicon Valley”) Everyone knows of the popular household names Apple and Microsoft. Apple was started by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. They created the first Apple computer in Jobs’ parents garage in the 1970’s. They knew that they had created something great so they called their company Apple. Bill Gates on the other hand created Microsoft. He never made a computer; what he did was create software and put it on other computers. Allegedly, Bill Gates stole Apple’s Macintosh prototype software from Steve Jobs. Gates only received the prototypes because Jobs thought he could trust Gates, but he was sorely mistaken. These two popular household names are similar, but they have differences such as ability to customize, operating system, price, and virus protection. Apple and Microsoft are alike in they were created at the same time and both had great ideas. Some similarities they share are products such as portable media players and smart phones, tablet devices, and retail stores. They both have portable media players. Apple has the iPod and Microsoft has the Zune. They both do the same thing, but have completely different functions within the device. Zune is all tiled and more cut and dry verses the iPod ,which is sleek, creative, and allows more wiggle room than the Zune. Apple wins over people with the iPhone; it functions just like their iPod...

Garden Gate Tuition-Aid

...affecting it. Firstly, garden gate tuition program does not have an already existing advantage for future internal promotions. The company needs to use the tuition aid program as an incentive for already existing employees as a way of getting a higher chance of being promoted. This means that the employees that take part in the program should be highly considered over other employees for promotion positions because of their efforts and it would also motivate employees to take part and do well in the program. Secondly, their should be some sort of list or database of employees that have taken part in the tuition aid program so that they can be easily recognized and distinguished among other general employees. Thirdly, many supervisors do not regularly review the internal job postings which means that many of the company's HR professionals in-charge would have no idea about the internal job postings to start with, know who to nominate and the exact positions oped for promotions which is what the tuition aid program should be good for. Fourthly, the information in the database is outdated or incomplete, so the HR professionals wouldn't know who among the employees have completed the tuition aid program and graduated and who hasn't. This is very ineffective and Garden Gate needs to implement and improve the ways its database is organized. The HR department needs to be aware of the changes in status of their employees, and also the job openings in the different departments...

Operating Systems

...NT1110_StudentName_Module1_Lab.doc 3/21/15 An operating system takes input in the form of zeros and ones -- bits -- and runs them through various circuits and processors, the hardware behaves according to built in rules. We define these rules using gates, which take input and produce an output in a structured way. The operating system allows complex programs to access hardware to get results. Only the hardware's physical properties can limit what programs can do. You could design an operating system by physically programming it into a computer's circuits. This would require building electrical pathways using millions of gates. But such an operating system would be slow and you would need the patience of Jonah to use it. That's why operating systems like Mac OS X and Windows are software. Software is flexible and hardware is not -- you can make changes to software with updates. To do the same with hardware would mean switching out physical chips and circuit boards. Operating systems are like the manager for a computer, it’s the job of the OS to monitor what software needs and what the hardware can provide. When you run applications on your computer, the OS allocates the resources necessary to complete the task. That can include processing power, memory and computer storage access, among other things. Ideally the OS will make sure that your computer's hardware is never overtaxed. ...

Should Hr Managers Only Recruit Extraverts as Leaders?

... there isn’t a relationship in between personality traits. By the last argument I am trying to say that it isn’t because a person is extravert that he is emotionally stable or that he is open minded. Therefore, a person can be extremely extravert but score poorly on other traits that are as important to be a good leader. When we look at the study of Judge and LePine about the bright and dark sides of personality, we see that here as well extraversion has its pro’s and con’s. It’s true that extraverted personalities are more likely to emerge and excel as leaders, and those have a higher job and life satisfaction. But these personalities where associated with sensation and excitement seeking which triggers impulsive behaviour. This brings along that extraversion is correlated to absenteeism, dangerous behaviours that lead to accidents, and a lower performance in certain jobs (routine jobs, isolated work,..). Following the Skills Approach Capability Model we can say that an extraverted person may have the potential to be a leader but that doesn’t mean that he performs as a leader...

Apple vs. Google Assignment 1

...Catherine Carr APPLE vs GOOGLE The Business week article is about Google going into the mobile phone business by developing its own touch screen smart phone, such as Apple’s has done with its popular iPhone. At the same time, Apple was announcing their, what they called, a strategic acquisition, by purchasing the company “Quattro Wireless, for a mere $275 million. Quattro is known in Silicon Valley circles, as a company whose main focus of business is to target mobile phone users. Apple is now the proud owner of “Quattro”. Now when first reading the article I had to wonder is this “déjà vu” 21st century style; or did the two CEO’s that were once good friends and of course, assuming their business relationship has not changed their personal relationship and that Schmitt and Jobs have not been forced to take the adversarial position in the “smart phone/mobile apps” world. Remember the legendary rivalries: Microsoft vs. Netscape, what a mess that was and really, in the end Bill Gates lost, if you call the multi millionaire losing at anything. But seriously, who really paid all the costs to fight Netscape? We did of course, the consumer. Microsoft and Apple were always “in”, but Jobs seemed to or appeared to be satisfied appealing to a certain type of individual consumer. Whereas, Microsoft always attracted the masses and the Business minded. Today there is Google and Apple and a new generation of high tech on the horizon, Apple...

Disadvantages Of Solid State Technology

...convert microwave signals. Without them we wouldn’t have RADAR! We also would not have a good foundation of information for the materials used in semiconductors today.(1,2) Theory There are many parts within a SSD and each has a specific and important job. Each piece is vital to the puzzle. Firstly we will discuss and explain the lingo around solid state technology, just so that later, we sound like we know what we’re talking about! Memory – Ahem! The correct term is Storage . . . nm - (nano meters) This is the production process used to make the cut on a piece of semiconductor material. The smaller the process, the more cuts can be put on a chip. This increases the storage capacity and lowers the voltage needed to run the chip, as the gates are smaller. MLC/SLC/TLC – This is the type of flash memory that data will be stored on. Single level cell was the first to come. It’s very reliable and, hence why it is only used within the enterprise market. Multi-level cell and triple-level cell came later. They all represent how many bits of data can be stored on a cell. NAND Gate – Negative AND gate. A NAND gate is the same as a AND gate, except it requires both of the inputs to be true for the output to be false. NOR Gate – Negative OR gate. If either input is true then the output will be false. Garbage collection – This is the recovery of space on the SSD that has been used for programs, when a program has finished with the space the data gets deleted. Wear levelling – This feature...

...A college degree does not mean success Contrary to popular belief a college degree is neither a guarantee nor a prerequisite to success. Success is a term that depends on the person defining it but very purpose of a college degree is to gain monetary success. There far too many incidences that have proven the statement wrong. Oprah Winfrey, Henry Ford and Bill Gates are not the only persons to achieve success without a degree. A quick search on the online search engine google.com would prove otherwise. Many that opt for college do not know of the myriad of careers that do not require a college degree. And with the current economy, even those with a college degree have a hard time finding a job. Dropping out of school is very often frowned upon. Terms like ‘slacker’ and ‘aimless’ are used to describe school dropouts. Even the term ‘dropout’ is derogatory. However, according to Forbes.com, the list of the richest people is filled with the very such dropouts. Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Larry Ellison found higher education to actually be keeping them from success. Bill gates scored an almost perfect score on his SAT but dropped out of Harvard University, Michael Dell dropped out of University of Texas at Austin and Larry Ellison dropped out of the University of Illinois. Surprisingly, the same article stated that 33% of the Forbes 400 members did not have a college degree. The popular magazine further mentions that “the average net worth of Forbes 400 members without...

The Outliers Gladwell Analysis

...In this chapter, Gladwell saw if the 10,000 hour rule apply to Bill Joy, Bill Gates, the Beatles and all the other examples he gave. The author soon discovered that the rule does, in fact, apply to all the peoples. Having a certain skill and excelling at it by practicing, will definitely lead to success. Also, having a cultural background is an advantage and a curse. Gladwell makes this statement known during his re-tell of the Beatles origin story. He also makes another theory regarding historical timing. Timing is relatively essential for having a lucky break, like Joy and Gates. Therefore, Gladwell believes that success is some what easy to achieve by having an practiced special skill, a cultural background(somewhat), and demographic timing. Outliers Chapter 3: “In the fifth episode of the 2008 season, the American television quiz show / vs. 100 had as its special guest a man named Christopher Langan. ” (Gladwell, p69) Gladwell writes about a Christopher Langan whose story is somewhat similar to many stories of...

Microsoft V the World

Author Note This paper was prepared for [PHIL301], [CS13-01], taught by [Carolyn Geiser] on [October 20, 2013]. CASE 7 !2 ! MICROSOFT VS THE WORLD Long before Google was born and before Apple was the most powerful company in the world there was Microsoft. Microsoft was the leader in software, services and solutions. Unfortunately for the competition Microsoft didn’t seem to like to play fair or enjoy competition. Microsoft’s competitors constantly called its business practices both monopolistic and anticompetitive. With Microsoft bringing in annual revenues of more than $66 million a year, a strong case could be made that Microsoft’s competitors were absolutely right. Microsoft had a practice of selling Windows to original equipment manufacturers (OEMS) at a 60 percent discount if they agreed to pay Microsoft for every computer sold. Microsoft was using its large share of the market to squeeze out smaller companies. Then when Microsoft battled Apple Computer, Bill Gates threatened to stop making Apple compatible products if Apple didn’t stop developing competitive software. Eventually both Apple and Microsoft worked out their differences. So in 1998 Microsoft paid $150 million of non-voting stock in Apple and $100 million for access to Apple’s patents. Microsoft used its market power to force another competitor to play by its rules. Microsoft...

Competitive Strategy

...Competitive Strategies: Apple Vs. Microsoft Paul Brouse BUS 508 February 4, 2013 Competitive Strategies: Apple Vs. Microsoft Since the mid-80s Apple and Microsoft have been locked in a heavy weight battle to become king in the technology industry. While Apple released its first Macintosh computer in 1984, Microsoft followed shortly after with the release of Windows 1.0 just a year later. The two struggled to gain a foothold on the market, and have been trying to outdo one another ever since. Corporate Culture Apple has long been known to have a very uncompromising corporate culture. For years Steve Jobs ran the company as a perfectionist who, while very successful, was not typically willing to alter his vision in any way. Where some corporations are a collaboration between the ideas of many individuals with some give and take, Apple products were almost one hundred percent Steve Jobs uncompromising vision. With Microsoft Windows maintaining a huge market share in the personal computing business, Apple never swayed from the concept of putting their Mac OS only on Apple hardware, instead of licensing it to various hardware manufacturers so that it may be on a wide variety of systems. Apple has always been about the vision of Steve Jobs, and the man was almost more of a designer than a technology guru, which is an indication of why the Apple iPhone with its superior design has been so successful. Another noticeable concept of Apple’s corporate culture is its secrecy...

Ballmer

...|Gates vs. Ballmer: Leadership at Microsoft | |Thought Exercise 6 | |HRM 601 | |Vickii Bacchetta | |April 5, 2009 | Broadly defined, a leader is someone who sets a direction for a company. This vision needs to be created and then fiercely believed and upheld. The leader must inspire others to work toward the vision. To do this well, a leader has to first be followed, trusted, and respected by their subordinates. Typically leaders have this vision because they also have a strong aspiration to make their mark on things. They aren’t happy with the way things are and believe they can make a substantial change. These characteristics may seem to make a person egotistical and arrogant but a good leader is still able to admit to and learn from faults or mistakes. What is Bill Gates’ leadership style? Bill Gates was great at setting direction for the company. He had a vision of the world and successfully moved Microsoft in that direction. That vision was “a computer on every desk and in every home”. Gates started the first major software company at a time when personal computing hardly existed – a radical change that has helped lead us into the Information Era. Gates believes, “it will...

Microsoft as a Monopoly or Not

..."Microsoft Corporation, is a multinational computer technology corporation with global annual revenue of US$44.28 billion and 71,553 employees in 102 countries as of July 2006. It develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range of software products for computing devices. Headquartered in Redmond, Washington, USA, its bestselling products are the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software, each of which has achieved near-ubiquity in the desktop computer market. Microsoft possesses footholds in other markets, with assets such as the MSNBC cable television network, the MSN Internet portal, and the Microsoft Encarta multimedia encyclopedia. The company also markets both computer hardware products such as the Microsoft mouse as well as home entertainment products such as the Xbox, Xbox 360 and MSN TV" ("Microsoft Corporation by eknowledge"). By law a monopoly is not allowed to exist in the US. It has been long discussion whether Microsoft is a monopoly or not? Among other charges Microsoft was charged with "monopolizing the computer operating system market, integrating the Internet Explorer web browser into the operating system in an attempt to eliminate competition from Netscape, and using its market power to form anticompetitive agreements with producers of related goods" (Economics: Resource Center). Because it obtained the current monopolistic state through innovation and its superior products many judge Microsoft...

Disposal Process of Paper

...dispose of paper products is to recycle it. For recycling, used paper must go through a process which will sort it, strain the glue and ink from it and finally bleach it so it can be made into new paper. The beginning of the disposal process of paper starts with the consumer disposing of the product in either a trash can or recycling bin. This is where the paper will either travel to landfills, incinerators or recycling facilities. Recycling trucks must collect the contents and transport them to sorting and processing facilities which will recycle the paper to new usable paper. Cities consider themselves environmentally responsible to recycle and dispose of paper and therefore provide garbage and recycling pick up services. This helps create jobs, plus recycling will also prevent cutting down other trees. Profit making companies are also involved since they will save money by using recycled material. Companies which use recycled paper and create recycled paper products have a socially more acceptable image. Educating the public also goes a long way to maximizing the recycling of as much of the used paper products as possible. By recycling...
