Abstract
“Douglas MacArthur was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on January 26, 1880. After graduating from West Point in 1903, he fought in World War I, and in World War II was the commander of Allied forces in the Pacific. When he criticized President Harry Truman's handling of the Korean War, he was relieved of his command. MacArthur died on April 5, 1964, and was buried in Norfolk, Virginia.” This is a small synopsis that I found on this web site. (MacArthur, 2014)

Douglas MacArthur a Leader
MacArthur attend WestPoint and graduated in 1903. This was the start of his leadership qualities. He fought in WWI where he achieved the rank of Major. After the war MacArthur was named superintendent of West Point, a post he held for the next three years. In 1930 he was promoted to general and selected as the Army chief of staff.
MacArthur earned the rank of five star general during WWII and was named the supreme commander in the Pacific war theater. He was ordered out of The Philippines after the Japanese were getting to close to him. He left there and was quoted saying “I shall return.” He made true on his promise. Below is a picture his return.

Japan surrendered to MacArthur on the battleship Missouri. Below is a picture of this happening. (MacArthur, 2014)

After WWII MacArthur was named the supreme commander of Japan’s occupying forces where he rounded up a lot of the war criminals and prosecuted them according to the law. Macarthur also made a constitution for Japan. This entitled many meetings with the leaders of Japan where changes were made and voted upon. He also was allowed to meet with the Emperor of Japan where he was instructed to not shake his hand, don’t step on his shadow, to always stand on his left, and no photos would be allowed these were just some of the things . MacArthur listened well as you can see below there is a picture of him with the Emperor something’s he did honor, but not all of them.
Below the picture an author by the name of Koyoto Inoue wrote about how things worked back then. (MacArthur, 2014)
“Japanese-American author Koyoto Inoue characterized the new Constitution in the title of her scholarly book: MacArthur’s Japanese Constitution. The book offers vivid insight into how the Japanese were able to address cross-cultural and cross-linguistic factors in fashioning a document which advanced combined Japanese and American values to create a new political system. The numerous drafting and approval processes required extensive participation and the ultimate approval of Japanese officials and entities. There were multiple meetings of the Japanese Cabinet, the Cabinet Bureau of Legislation, the Association for the People’s National Language Movement, the Privy Council (11 meetings), the National Diet (114 days of debate), the House of Representatives (HOR) Special Committee (meetings spanning 24 days), the House of Peers (HOP) Special Committee (16 sessions) and its subcommittee (4 days in closed session). Despite constant outside pressure to alter and influence this process, MacArthur remained firm in his commitment to a democratic government for Japan. Japanese officials and the Japanese people eventually embraced his vision.
On August 24, 1946, the HOR voted approval 429 to 8 and on October 6, 1946 the HOP passed the new Constitution with over a two-thirds majority. A few amendments were worked out and finalized thereafter the new Constitution was promulgated on November 3, 1946. It went into effect six months later, on May 3, 1947, which subsequently became a national holiday in Japan – Constitutional 
Memorial Day.
MacArthur also influenced Japanese leadership to implement additional reforms involving land ownership, education and decentralization of the economy. Japan would no longer be controlled by a small group of powerful land owners and businessmen. MacArthur, in his Reminiscences, was generous in sharing credit for this historic accomplishment:”
(MacArthur, 2014) Once the Korean War started MacArthur was put in charge of the forces fighting in Korea. He tried to fight the war as he did back in WWII. This did not sit well with President Truman. The two had a few meetings upon disagreeing on how the war should be handled Truman fried MacArthur. Some speculate it was because Truman did not want him to run for President. MacArthur never ran for President. I feel he would have made a good President as he was a good leader during some of the worst times in our history. In 1952, MacArthur met with Dwight Eisenhower, who had just been elected president. He advised him on how to end the Korean War. His decidedly extreme strategy, which included the use of atomic weapons, was rejected. Douglas MacArthur died in Washington, D.C., on April 5, 1964, at the age of 84.
