Throught this journal Zaroff can be characterized as thorough and unempathetic. First off Zaroff studies his guests/prey and learns what he can about them. This is a quote I found from the story proving this, “one small trait of the general's that made Rainsford uncomfortable. Whenever he looked up from his plate, he found the general studying him, appraising him narrowly” (Connell 41). This quote shows that Zaroff watches how people act and think. Zaroff also is very thorough will hunting, because he examines every inch of ground. This quote from the story proves this, “It was General Zaroff. He made his way along with his eyes fixed in utmost concentration on the ground before him” (Connell 47) as well as this quote from a couple paragraphs …show more content…
These quotes from the story demonstrates Zaroff's knowledge of his hobbies and prey, “ ‘I've read your book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet’... I have but one passion in my life, Mr. Rainsford, and it is the hunt’ “ (Connell 40). This shows how Zaroff studies his craft and strives to know all that he can know about hunting. It even hints at how well Zaroff knows Rainsford. Zaroff can also be classified as unempathetic. Zaroff’s helping hand Ivan was killed and Zaroff seemed indifferent to his death. This quote helps to explain what happened, “for he saw General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not. The knife, driven by the recoil of the springing tree, had not wholly failed” (Connell 50). After Ivan is killed Zaroff continues with the hunt and does not care that Ivan was just killed. Zaroff acts as if the whole hunt is an intricate game. At another point in the story Zaroff loses his dog to a trap that Rainsford and Zaroff congratulates Rainsford on his achievement and then walks away. This quote shows how little Zaroff cares about his dogs, “for he heard the sharp crackle of the branches breaking… Thank you for a most amusing evening” (Connell

General Zaroff Character Sketch

...Game by Richard Connell is a short story following Rainsford and his conflicts with General Zaroff. In the beginning of the story, Rainsford falls over the railing of his yacht and swims to the shore of an uncharted island. Travelling through the island, hungry and exhausted, he stumbled upon a large chateau. Inside, he meets the island’s sole owner, General Zaroff; an eccentric, unsurpassed hunter who’s skills in hunting is similar to Rainsford’s. However Zaroff believes that anything is game including humans, an opinion Rainsford strongly opposes. They later engage in a one-on-one hunting match which leaves Rainsford as the winner and subsequently feeds the general to the hounds. General Zaroff is a difficult character due to his swayed characteristics; at one point he is of high-class and thoughtful towards his guests, while he also can be seen as a conceited murderer. These attributes and his serious stance towards hunting leave Zaroff as a complicated person. General Zaroff is a very thoughtful man, a trait that contrasts with his other traits. The first example to show the general’s respect towards others is the following quote: “We shouldn’t be chatting here. We can talk later. Now you want food, clothes, rest. You shall have them. This is a most-restful spot.” Another instance to prove the general’s thoughtfulness is one of Rainsford’s own thoughts. During the dinner he found the general to be a respectable host, one that is very welcoming....

Characterization And Imagery In The Most Dangerous Game By Richard Connell

...As the great author Richard Connell once said “sometimes I think evil is a tangible thing--with wavelengths, just as sound and light have. An evil place can, so to speak, broadcast vibrations of evil. Connell and Browning use characterization and imagery to show mankind can become so attached to something or someone that they could become psychotic. General Zaroff shows imagery by talking about his house on his island and saying that nobody shall leave. Connell uses the characterization of Zaroff in “The Most Dangerous Game” to show how hunting turned him into who he is now, very psychotic.”if anyone should try to get into my house-or out of it-something extremely regrettable would occur to him. He hummed a snatch of song from the folies bergere.”(Connell P#36) This quote proves how absolutely psychotic General Zaroff really was especially with killing/hunting.Zaroff has a lot of characterization that is used on him by Connell such as him being a hunter and how “his whole life is hunting.” In this quote Zaroff shows kind of what hunting is to him. “My whole life has been one prolonged...

The Most Dangerous Game Analysis

...hunter/hunted ideology is a prominent component. In the story, General Zaroff actually hunts Rainsford in a sort of game, hence, “The Most Dangerous Game.” Though this story is a clear example of the hunter/hunted complex in action, it is only one example. In another circumstance, the hunter/hunted complex would be irrelevant and therefore absent. In this particular story, a man called General Zaroff serves as the hunter. In the beginning, and even before the game begins, Zaroff boasts about his intelligence against the animals he’d hunted before. One example of his gasconade would be “Simply this: Hunting had ceased to be what you call ‘a sporting proposition.’ It had become too easy. I always got my quarry.(pg 234)” This quote portrays Zaroff’s pride and skill in being a hunter, along with his detachment to the game he hunts. Preceding this event, Zaroff himself states, “God makes some men poets. Some He makes kings, some beggars. Me He...

Even though these people might have been more docile, they would put up a fight in fear of being killed. This fear drives them to do extremely uncivilized things.“The Most Dangerous Game” portrays how civilized people will turn uncivilized if their life depends on it. One example of of people becoming uncivilized is strength that was not had before and aggression. On line 240, the narrative says, “‘Hurled me against a tree,ʼ said the general. ‘Fractured my skull.
