Abstract

The Blast in Central No.5: A Mine Disaster, which No One Stopped, was a case that John B. Martin shared how this event made history and is known today as a very tragic event that occurred in the coal mine near the town of Centralia, Illinois. This tragic event bought the concern of mine safety and health concerns, which both were results in an explosion when an under burdened shot or blown-out shot ignited coal dust which 111 of the 142 men were killed. After the event many still question who could be blamed for this tragic event and how this tragic event could have been prevented.

The Centralia Mine opened in 1907 and remained free of fatal accidents for decades (.www.city.centralia.il.us) This is the same mine that during World War II, provided coal to the war effort. By the 1940’s the mine that was once free of all issues began to have concerns surface. The mine inspectors began reporting excessive coal dust in the mines and also provided recommendations to rectify the issue. Driscoll Scanlan was the inspector of the district that included Centralia Mine No. 5 at this time. Scanlan was also familiar with the mine environment due to the fact that was a former miner. Scanlan inspected the mine every 3 months. Each time he reported the severity of the coal dust buildup in the mine. Although Scanlan inspected the mine several times in the years before the explosion and documentation that was made concerned many due to the issues that he found in his through inspections. Due to all of the errors Scanlan found during his many investigations he was forced to speak with Prudent, the director of state mining board. Scanlan suggested that he shut down the mine for good or cleans it. Scanlan made it very clear that the concerns he had about the mine were major concerns. Scanlan not only shared these concerns with Prudent he also sent reports at the end of

Turner and the Sublime

...Turner and the Sublime In Romantic art, nature—with its uncontrollable power, unpredictability, and potential for cataclysmic extremes—offered an alternative to the ordered world of Enlightenment thought. The violent and terrifying images of nature conjured by Romantic artists recalled the eighteenth-century aesthetic of the Sublime. An artist that stood out among the many individuals of this time was Joseph Mallord William Turner. Turner was one of the most influential landscape painters in England. His style consisted of oil painting, watercolour, and etching. Through his career he went through different ways of expressing his talent when painting. At the beginning of his career, his work consisted of solid objects and detail but as time moved forward his focus turned towards accentuating color and light. Fascinated with natural and atmospheric elements, Turner stood out as an early-impressionist for he violated the rules of academic painting, and for this was highly criticized by his fellow contemporaries. Despite the critics, Turner never ceased to provoke through these turbulent, chaotic forces that haunted his paintings. J.M.W. Turner, born in 1775, came from a working-class family. His father, William Turner, was a barber and wigmaker while his mother, Mary Marshall, came from a family of butchers. Turner's mother was mentally unbalanced, and her instability was aggravated by the fatal illness of Turner's younger sister. As a result, Turner was sent to stay with an...

...Born in Ohio in 1934, Charles Manson is notoriously connected to the brutal slayings of actress Sharon Tate and other Hollywood residents, but he was never actually found guilty of committing the murders himself. However, the famous Tate-La Bianca killings have immortalized him as a living embodiment of evil. Images of his staring "mad eyes" are still used today to illustrate countless serial-murder news stories. The Manson Family—including Charles Manson and his young, loyal dropout disciples of murder—is thought to have carried out some 35 killings. Most were never tried, either for lack of evidence or because the perpetrators were already sentenced to life for the Tate/La Bianca killings. In 2012, Manson was denied parole for the 12th time. Charles Manson I believe was not crazy but very clever individual. Manson had a group of people he referred to as his “family” he was a very manipulative man to the people around him. His followers numbering round the one-hundreds, also including a small portion of impressionable young girls. He had them all to believe without question that he was Jesus and his prophecies of a race war. Manson was not only influenced by drugs such as LSD but by art works and music of the time such as The Beatles song “Helter Skelter” from their white album. The first murders took place on August 9, 1969, at Roman Polanski’s Beverley Hills home at 10050 Cielo Drive. Manson chose his four most best comrades- Charles “Tex” Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia...

Macbeth

...Shakespeare in Film Individual Assignment Macbeth is well known to be one of Shakespeare’s shortest yet darkest tragedies. The rich, psychological turmoil experienced by the main characters and the incorporation of elements such as the supernatural culminates in a tragedy that is one of Shakespeare’s most intense and grim. I will be examining the 1971 Roman Polanski film due to the unique life story of the director and the gruesome murders that occurred prior to the film. The film employs the use of gratuitous violence, nudity and graphic imagery that far exceeds that of the text, which Roman Polanski masterfully uses to highlight the inherent madness and evil that drives Macbeth and in doing so, successfully creates an psychologically disturbing film with an atmosphere of perpetual dread. Firstly, one distinct feature about the film that differs from the text is the inclusion of nudity seen in several scenes. Macbeth itself draws largely upon the theme of the occult and madness as the main driving forces, with the inclusion of the prophetic apparitions, visions of ghosts and mental breakdowns. The scene showing Macbeth seeks out the witches for the 2nd time exemplifies the occult brilliantly as it opens to a huge coven of naked witches huddled around the cauldron whilst chanting “Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn, cauldron bubble”. In the book, there was no mention of other witches apart from the three and by including the scene, the huge gathering...

King Lear Nothing

...Hermesmann 1 Anna Hermesmann Nothing From Nothing: Concepts of Justice in King Lear Ex nihilio nihilfit—“nothing comes from nothing.” In the pre-Christian world of Shakespeare‟s King Lear, this doctrine rules as the actions of the characters prove futile and tragedy results. Lear fails to maintain order in his kingdom and his family; Gloucester loses his sight; and Cordelia, the only one who really loves her father, dies. Critics such as Samuel Johnson have argued that because of Cordelia‟s death, Shakespeare‟s ending is flawed, that he fails to follow the “natural ideas of justice” by allowing “Cordelia to perish in a just cause.” In 1689, approximately eighty years after Shakespeare completed the first text of King Lear, Nahum Tate published an alternate ending to the play in which Cordelia lives and eventually goes on to rule in her father‟s place. While this “happy” ending was performed as if it were Shakespeare‟s original for decades afterwards, it actually runs contrary to the original version of King Lear by applying Judeo-Christian human concepts of justice to a world that is not governed by a just God. In the nihilistic world Shakespeare creates, there is no just force to establish an objective morality, and therefore, the rules of right and wrong, and the consequences of each, are obsolete. Thus, because King Lear is set in a world in which the generally accepted rules of justice do not apply, Shakespeare‟s ending, including the death of the only truly virtuous character...

Charles "Tex", Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian, were sent to a home that was rented by Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. When arriving there was the first victim, Steven Parent who was outside that was a friend of Sharon Tate and at 18 years old his life was taken, for just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. At the time Tate was pregnant and she was the one who pleaded for life as Atkins took her life by stabbing her stomach. Atkins then used, Tates own blood to write "pig" on a door. Charles Manson's Inhumane Cases

...The Manson Family was a cult that was founded in San Francisco in 1967. The group’s theme revolved around scientology, satanism, and other beliefs as well. The cult’s practices began when Manson developed the idea that there would be a race war in our country. This war would be called, “Helter Skelter.” This would consist of African Americans winning the war, but would turn to the whites for leadership. He was going to start the war, hide with his cult, then emerge afterwards to take control. He did this by posing murders to frame blacks. In total, nine people were killed. The most famous murder case involved with the Manson Family was the Tate murders. Charles Manson had wanted to pursue a music career, but was rudely turned away by Terry Melcher, a famous record producer. Thinking that he had still lived in the same location, he sent four of his followers: Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabian, and Patricia Krenwinkel to the house to, “totally destroy everyone in the house, as gruesome as they could.” The owner of the house, Roman Polanski, who was not the person that Manson was targeting, had...

Serial Killers: Charles Manson

...of knowledge he found himself through his music and helped him form a perspective of the world. Sometimes, he would even use the power of music to control his females. Charles went through many girls; mostly of which were powerless and would do anything he asked of them because he made them believe that he was Jesus Christ. He keeps his follower growing and staying by moving place to place (London, 2013). Drugs were a real big problem of how he controls his followers. Charles got an isolated ranch where he could keep his followers, which grown so big he named them the “Manson Family” (London, 2013). The family would do anything that Charles told them to do, including kill. Charles instructed Tex Watson to lead the girls into Sharon Tate house to do kill and Charles continued to tell them to kill anybody else he could think of and then he told them to leave messages on the walls. Some of the messages on the walls were “Death to pigs, Pigs, and Helter Skelter” (Bugliosi & Gentry, 1994). Manson motive was that “his philosophy of the upcoming Apocalypse was the true motive behind the killing and told his family that Helter Skelter was coming and the uprising of the racial war between “blackies” and “whiteys”. He would facilitate this war by killing “whiteys” and implicating that the African Americans did the acts” (“Charles Manson and the Manson family”, 2016). This motive is what drove Manson and his followers to commit the murder acts. Manson personality let alone was...

Lucille Clifton

...Harsh conditions, death, poverty, the overall unsentimental nature of life, and definition of an identity are all are subjects explored by writers Lucille Clifton and John Crowe Ransom in their writings. Although the two poets came from very different lives, the unique search for identity and meaning in life unites the two writer's poems in their expression of life. John Crowe Ransom a very distinguished gentleman born as the third child to a Methodist minister was raised in a very literate family. At age fifteen Ransom enrolled in Tennessee's esteemed Vanderbilt University where he later became a founding member of the group of writers known as the fugitives. Favoring poetic modernism in the early 1900's, The fugitives focus was on philosophy, american pragmatisim and the loss of a "southern identity and culture" due to the industrialization of the time period. After graduating from Vanderbilt in 1909 Ransom went on to become an English teacher, Rhodes Scholar and later the headof the english department at Vnderbilt. Allthe while Ransom gained notoriety with scholars for his candid and unique way of examining emotional situations with little eotional pull or bias. With rootsin psychology, Ransom's poetry examines the ironic and unsentimental nature of life. Much like Ransom, poet Lucille Clifton often explored the rigityof the world, however Clifton's insight and ability to write about such rigity come from her impoverished and unprivilaged upbringing. Born in 1936 to father...

Splenda

...insecticide at Queen Elizabeth College in London. He was working with his colleague another scientist named Leslie Hough. While working on a compound that mixed sulfuryl chloride and a sugar solution produced a violent reaction that looked like powder. The compound that it produced was 1‘, 4, 6, 6‘- tetrachloro - 1‘, 4, 6, 6’ - tetra-deoxygalactosucrose. Shashikant Phadnis misunderstood a directive from his superior and though he was told to taste the mixture. What he tasted was extremely sweet. He told Hough about it and he tried it as well. Hough was so delighted by the sweetness that he had the idea to put some in his coffee even though Phadnis was concerned about toxicity. The two scientists worked with a British sugar company named Tate & Lyle over the next year to find the perfect formula combination for their discovery. In 1976, Phadnis and Hough found their formula and in its pure form it is known as “sucralose”. The little yellow packets we use today contain fillers with the sucralose known as “Splenda”. (Bilger, 2006). Splenda is used on many foods or even baking. It can be used on fruits and in drinks such as coffee and tea. The popularity that Splenda has today has even been mass produced in foods, beverages, sport drinks, cookies, cakes and frozen foods. (Splenda, 2005) Safety There have been some controversies concerning the safety of Splenda or sucralose. Sucralose has been tested and has had more than 110 scientific studies done. Napoleons Ambitious Regin

...Napoleons Ambitious Reign In George Orwell’s allegorical novel, Animal Farm, Napoleon takes his dominate reign to a level of despair with his inhumane morals and the segregation he forces upon the animals. He builds himself up to an eminence beyond any other leader. He becomes a cynical and crazed pig with power after he banishes Snowball, who was the so called better leader. Although after all his hype was over, he becomes “untouchable” in a sense, with only having a few willing supporters. In the end it seems that Napoleon destroys what was once a harmless dream of Old Majors. Throughout the fable Napoleon was no democrat, with his twisted techniques of propaganda and forceful persuasion. He was not one for freedom of speech, and had no care for anybody but himself, although with Snowball still around he seemed unable to display his full leadership skills. Even with Snowball seeming to be the stronger leader, Napoleon had still managed to round up a clique of followers for himself. This group eventually grew as Napoleon became more bitter and demanding of the animals. He established this initial power by disagreeing so strongly with Snowball, which lead to arguments, thus leading to animals having to pick sides. With the commandments written on the wall and the second being “Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend” just shows how evil and cunning Napoleon becomes as he decimates Snowballs power. For example, with the starting idea of a windmill getting built...
