Getting To Know Parks and Rec
Today, there are so many different television shows to watch and the variety just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Some people may like horror, drama, reality, etc. This essay is for the people who enjoy comedy television. These people might like one show in particular. The show Parks and Recreation. This show is a positive, successful, uplifting, modern television show that is worth the watch.
Parks and recreation is about a group of people who live in a small town in Indiana called Pawnee. These people work for the government in the Parks and Recreation department. The show follows these characters and lets you take a look into their crazy lives individually and as a whole. The show mainly focuses on the main character Leslie Knope played by actress Amy Poehler. Leslie and her colleagues work every day to help make Pawnee a better place. The show first aired on NBC in 2009, and ended in 2015 with seven seasons. You may still watch this show due to reruns, DVDs, Hulu, or Netflix.
This television show can be seen as uplifting for many reasons. In the show, Leslie loves her town very much and tries her absolute hardest to make it a better place for the residents. Unfortunately, the residents of Pawnee do not care much for what she is trying to do and make it harder for her to do her job. Even when they do this, she still does not give up and she gets the job done. The message here is that if someone or something is trying to push you back as much as possible, do not give up. Push forward, and later you will get to look back at a job well done.
Another uplifting concept is when Leslie helps all her friends get careers in something that they are passionate about. One of her friends Tom Haverford played by actor Aziz Ansari was not happy with his job, so she helped him find what he was passionate about. He later became an owner of a successful restaurant in their town. Another character Andy Dwyer played by actor Chris Pratt was a simple minded homeless man, but with her help multiple times, he became the lead character in his own successful television show.
This show has been very successful over the years and has won many awards. It has been nominated for 100 awards and has won 15 of them. In 2010 it won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Individual Episode. They have also won an AFI Award, American Comedy Award, and multiple IGN Movie Awards. In 2014, actress Amy Poehler won a Golden Globes Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical. Amy also got to host the 2015 Golden Globes Awards with Tina Fey.
This show has even helped the casted characters further their careers. Actor Chris Pratt was casted for very successful movies like Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy after being in this television show. He has also been nominated for 22 awards and has won 9 of them. Another actor from the show Retta has been casted for the movie Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, and the television show Girlfriends Guide to Divorce. The actress Rashida Jones has been had a role in movies Inside Out and A Very Murray Christmas. She has been nominated eleven times but has won three awards.
On The Website Rotten Tomatoes, this television series has a rating of 90 percent from the audience and all the critics. It also has an 80 percent rating from the top critics. So as you can see, this show is pretty well liked. With this being said not everyone is fond of this show. In season one, it got a 66 percent audience score, and an all critics score of 57 percent. Under these rating the websites states “While it has yet to develop its own identity, Parks and Recreation's awkward and absurd humor hints at its potential to become a great comedy, thanks largely to the talents of Amy Poehler”. Linda Stasi from the New York Post said “Parks is too self-consciously hip to be hip. This isn't one I'll be rushing to DVR each week”.
Parks and Recreation has been compared to some other television shows. The main one it is compared to is a show that airs on the same network called The Office. This show pretty much does the same thing Parks and Rec does. It just lets you take a look at the peoples live as individuals and a whole. In this show thought, the people all work for a paper company called Dunder Mifflin. The main character of this show is a male called Michael Scott played by actor Steve Carell. This show has an 80 percent audience score on rotten tomatoes.
If anyone is looking for a good television series to watch, Parks and Rec will not disappoint. Its story line and array of crazy characters is probably why it has been so successful and helped the careers of some of the cast members. Also, the positive messages in every episode can lift the spirits of anyone. That being said, it is very hard to find a television series that still does that.

Blast

...John Bartlow Martin / The Blast in Centralia No. 5: A Mine Disaster No One Stopped Already the crowd had gathered. Cars clogged the short, black rock road from the highway to the mine, cars bearing curious spectators and relatives and friends of the men entombed. State troopers and deputy sheriffs and the prosecuting attorney came, and officials from the company, the Federal Bureau of Mines, the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals. Ambulances ar- rived, and doctors and nurses and Red Cross workers and soldiers with stretchers from Scott Field. Mine res- cue teams came, and a federal rescue unit, experts bur- dened with masks and oxygen tanks and other awkward paraphernalia of disaster. . . . One hundred and eleven men were killed in that explosion. Killed needlessly, for almost everybody concerned had known for months, even years, that the mine was dangerous. Yet nobody had done any- thing effective about it. Why not? Let us examine the background of the explosion. Let us study the mine and the miners, Joe Bryant and Bill Rowekamp and some others, and also the numerous people who might have saved the miners’ lives but did not. The miners had appealed in various directions for help but got none, not from their state government nor their federal government nor their employer nor their own union. (In threading the maze of official- dom we must bear in mind four agencies in author- ity: The State of Illinois, the United States Government, the Centralia...

Nike and Ethics

...“Nike” History Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight founded Nike Inc. as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1962. The partners began their relationship at the University of Oregon where Bowerman was Knight’s track and field coach. While attending Stanford University, Knight wrote a paper about breaking the German dominance of the U.S. athletic shoe industry with low-priced Japanese shoes. In an attempt to realize his theory, Knight visited Japan and engineered an agreement with the Onitsuka Tiger Company, a manufacturer of quality athletic shoes, to be their sole distributor in the United States. In 1962, Knight received the first shipment of 200 pairs of Tiger shoes to his parent’s garage in Oregon. The shoes were bought by Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS), the name of the partnership between Knight and Bowerman that they formed with only $1,000 in capital. Knight peddled Tiger’s shoes at local track meets grossing $8,000 of sales in their first year. Knight and Bowerman both had full time jobs, so in 1965, Jeff Johnson was brought in as the 1st full time employee for BRS. Jeff Johnson quickly became a valuable asset. Jeff started all of BRS’s print advertising and even started designing some shoes. In 1971, BRS, with creditor support, started manufacturing their own line of shoes. Later that year, the first BRS shoe was introduced. It was the first shoe that bore the Nike brand name, referring to the Greek Goddess of Victory, and the Swoosh trademark. Introduction For most products, to suggest consumers would be better off served by a regulated monopoly than by a competitive market would be a heresy, but for electricity, experience in Britain suggests that this would indeed be the case. There are four main reasons for this: • Competition is not a ‘free good’. Introducing competition imposes a range of additional costs that must be paid by consumers. In the case of electricity, these costs are very high and it is far from clear that the benefits will outweigh them; • Retail electricity competition will result in a transfer of costs from large to small consumers because large consumers have the incentive, negotiating skill and resources to get the best deal from the market; • Within small consumers, it will be the poorest consumers that do worst because competing retail suppliers will target rich consumers...

Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. I was one of those Texas journalists. I spent about a decade trying to find accurate information on Bush’s record in the Texas National Guard.
