1. What are the primary characteristics of culture?

Culture is Learned : People are not born with culture. We learn culture from families, peers, institutions, and media. The process of learning culture is known as enculturation. While all humans have basic biological needs such as food, sleep, and sex, the way we fulfill those needs varies cross-culturally. Culture is Interrelated Element : The various parts of a culture being interconnected. All aspects of a culture are related to one another and to truly understand a culture, one must learn about all of its parts, not only a few. Culture is Adaptive : This simply means that cultures interact and change. Because most cultures are in contact with other cultures, they exchange ideas and symbols Culture is Shared : Because we share culture with other members of our group, we are able to act in socially appropriate ways as well as predict how others will act

Primary Characteristics of Culture - Language : Important for communication and passing on tradition and beliefs.
- Communication : There are many sayings,expression that only some people understand
- Religion : Monotheism-belief in one good Polytheism-belief in more than one good. Major world religions are Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism.
- Values/Attitudes : Promote cultural pride and unity such as arts and literature.
- Social Structure : A way to rank people in order of status. (Money, Occupation,Race,Edu)

2. What are individualism and collectivism? How do they differ? Individualism is a belief that everyone needs to look after themselves and support themselves.Individualism is the cultural belief that the person comes first and collectivism is the belief that the group comes first.
