What makes a company so successful? It is their connection to their audience. If the audience feels disrespected, it will hurt the company a great deal. GAP is a well-known clothing store for people of all ages. Being very popular, they have a wide and very diverse audience. They recently released an advertisement that did not sit well with a majority of their audience. It was viewed as racist and many people made sure that GAP knew they were not okay with it. Even though it was a misunderstanding and it was not GAPs intention to come of as discriminate, they still got a lot of criticism for it. They could have multiple people watch over the advertisement before it was released to make sure that it was acceptable. If they had their KELP principles in order they could have been even more successful. The major principle that they needed to address was pathos. If they thought about the audience's emotional reaction to this, it could have prevented this problem to begin with. By releasing an advertisement looked at as discriminating, they may have lost some customers. Discrimination is such a sensitive topic they should have take the audience's emotion into consideration before they released it. They should take this situation as a lesson and instead of just taking the advertisement down and giving an apology, they could have release a remake of a better one to keep all of their customer happy.
The rhetor, GAP, should have released another advertisement in place of the old one, instead of only taking it down. The kairos would have been perfect because after such a horrific outlash, releasing an advertisement against discrimination, using many diverse races, would have touched onto the audience's pathos. By releasing another advertisement, the audience would see that GAP cares about them and about what they had to say and they do not want to sweep the problem under the rug, but instead they want to show they understand what they did wrong and they want to try and fix
