GINGIVITIS

What is it?
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums (gingiva). Bacteria sticks to the surface of the teeth forming plaque, which thickens and grows into calculus. This causes the gums to be pushed away from the teeth, causing pockets that are the perfect place for bacteria to grow. Gingivitis is a component of Periodontal Disease. This is one of the most common dental diseases of dogs and cats. (Inflammation of Dog's Gum (Canine gingivitis), nd) (Gum Disease in Dogs, n.d.)

Procter & Gamble, Inc. Scope

...CASE Procter & Gamble, Inc. Scope As Gwen Hearst looked at the year-end report, she was pleased to see that Scope held a 32 percent share of the Canadian mouthwash market for 1990. She had been concerned about the inroads that Plax, a prebrushing rinse, had made in the market. Since its introduction in 1988, Plax had gained a 10 percent share of the product category and posed a threat to Scope. As Brand Manager, Hearst planned, developed, and directed the total marketing effort for Scope, Procter & Gamble’s (P&G) brand in the mouthwash market. She was responsible for maximizing the market share, volume, and profitability of the brand. Until the entry of Plax, brands in the mouthwash market were positioned around two major benefits: fresh breath and killing germs. Plax was positioned around a new benefit—as a “plaque fighter”—and indications were that other brands, such as Listerine, were going to promote this benefit. The challenge for Hearst was to develop a strategy that would ensure the continued profitability of Scope in the face of these competitive threats. Her specific task was to prepare a marketing plan for P&G’s mouthwash business for the next three years. It was early February 1991, and she would be presenting the plan to senior management in March. ■ COMPANY BACKGROUND Based on a philosophy of providing products of superior quality and value that best fill the needs of consumers, Procter & Gamble is one of the most successful consumer goods companies in the world...

Improve Quality by Improving Access to Oral Health for Elderly Population in Ltcf

...considered separate from overall health. However, dental diseases are not only associated but can also lead to heart diseases, stroke, and diabetes. The significance of this correlation is due to the concept that the majority of care in cost excess can be attributed to these medical conditions. Some of the major oral health conditions of concern include tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancers. As the population begins to shift towards an increase in elderly patients, they are living longer and keeping their teeth longer as well, resulting in an increase in the need for treatment of gum disease and other dental services. These problems can also be a complication of certain medications used to treat systemic diseases. The purpose of this paper is to improve access and quality to oral health care for elderly population in Massachusetts who are residents in Long Term Care facilities. (Clemencia M. Vargas, 2001) The elderly are identified in the U.S. Surgeon General’s report on oral health as one of the most vulnerable populations with regard to poor dental care. In Massachusetts 13.3% of the state’s population are considered seniors, defined as being 65 years of age or older. There are more than 143,000 residents age 85 and older and that number is expected to grow 52% by the 2030. About 45,000 Massachusetts residents live in long term care facilities and there is no one-size-fits-all model of oral health care for this growing population. Many seniors are keeping their natural...

Resources are allocated to achieve those outcomes that the firm values the most. Promotion involves a number of tools we can use to increase demand for our The most well known component of promotion is advertising, but we can also use tools such as the following:  Public relations (the firm’s staff provides information to the media in the hopes of getting coverage). This strategy has benefits (it is often less expensive and media coverage is usually more credible than advertising) but it also entails a risk in that we can’t control what the media will say. Note that this is particularly a useful tool for small and growing businesses— especially those that make a product which is inherently interesting to the audience. Trade promotion. Here, the firm offers retailers and wholesalers temporary discounts, which may or may not be passed on to the consumer, to stimulate sales. Sales promotion. Electric Toothbrush Evaluation

...Preventive Dentistry An in vitro evaluation of electric toothbrushes B. S. Khambay*/A. D. Walmsley^* Fotir cotnmercially avaiiable electric toothbrushes (Sonieare, Braun Electric Toothbrush, Interplak, and Blend-a-Dent) »ere assessed both for their operating characteristics and their ability to retnove a 'food debris " medium. The Sonieare and Blend-a-Dent have a lateral vibrator)' action, while the Interplak and Braun produce a rotary movement of the brush head. The vibratory action of the Sonieare was susceptible to loading. All devices produced both stable-pulsating cavitation and acoustic tnicrostreaming that was demonstrated in vitro using a suspension of particles in water Their effectiveness in removing a food debris medium was assessed with and without water Three of the brushes (Sonieare, Braun, and Blend-aDent) were simitar in their abllit}- to remove the placjue, and all were superior to the Interplak: its streaming forces removed no food debris. The results indicated that the Blend-a-Dent was the most effective brush design in vitro, although the differences between Blend-a-Dent and Sonieare were not statistically significant. Hll Case

...Environmental Pollution at Hindustan Lever’s Kodaikanal Plant In mid-2004, Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) executives looked back at the events of the past three years at their mercury thermometer factory in Kodaikanal in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. After mercury leakage from the plant had been reported in March 2001, heavy expenditure had been incurred in environmental risk assessment, waste disposal and health monitoring. The expenditure had exceeded the total profits generated by the plant since its inception. But the pressure from NGOs, led by Greenpeace , who had been protesting since March 2001 had not subsided. The NGOs had indulged in novel ways of keeping the issue alive. These included chaining themselves to the HLL branch office in Chennai on 15th November 2002, disrupting the Annual General Meetings (AGMs) of HLL held on 13th June 2003 and 29th June 2004, shouting slogans and brandishing placards and enlisting sympathy from ex-workers and the general public. Greenpeace also maintained the pressure on HLL through its website, photoalbums, posters, persistent media briefing and seminars. The NGOs had most recently attacked HLL in April 2004 in a seminar in Chennai. Even as they waited anxiously for the regulator, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board’s (TNPCB) nod to start decontamination of equipment and remediation of soil, HLL’s senior managers believed they had discharged their duties conscientiously. They wondered what more was needed to be done...
