...This past week, the same day I photographed the Brown Creepers in my last post, I was making the trip home after work, when my good karma finally paid off. I was starting to change lanes to turn when I saw this on the roadside. [singlepic id=1093 w=450] I often have trouble distinguishing a Cooper's Hawk from a Sharp-shinned without putting some work into it, but this one was large enough to remove any doubt. This was a Cooper's and likely a female since they are larger than males. And this was a large Cooper's. Still running 70 mph, I couldn't stop in time to pull over. That meant turning around, driving a mile back and making another pass. I was ready this time, stopping at a distance, shooting the photo above before moving closer. This was the first Cooper's I'd ever "worked," so I didn't have any idea what to expect. Do they sit and let you approach or are they like Red-tails, so skittish that it seems they bail if you so much as think of pulling over. The road was busy, including too many 18-wheelers for my comfort, so I had to wait for an opening to creep down the shoulder to get closer. Plus, there's a Highway Patrol office a half mile back towards town and the last thing I needed was a trooper getting after me for driving on the shoulder. Close enough to shoot through the passenger window, I killed the engine and stopped. I had the camera halfway up and the hawk seemed like she was going to stay put. On a certain tit-for-tat level, ''Enough'' might even be seen as a feminist revenge for the stereotyping in ''Fatal Attraction,'' even though both films were written and directed by men. The movie, which opens today nationwide, also exploits an ugly undercurrent of class warfare. Its star, Jennifer Lopez, plays a spunky working-class woman suckered into marriage with a rich yuppie master of the universe who brutally abuses her. In the movie's climax, she faces down her husband in one-on-one combat, armed with brass knuckles and fortified by a crash course in martial arts. Will honest working-class pluck and self-reliance triumph over spoiled upper-class privilege? You don't have to ask. It is prevalent on a daily basis, whether from social networking sites, search engines, or Internet Service Providers. In his October 2014 lecture “Why Privacy Matters”, Journalist and New York Times best seller Glenn Greenwald disputes the notion that aggregated observation only affects those divulging in acts of misconduct. As a replacement for the traditional visual arts museum or participating in a touch tour, it would be a museum of music history. The group of visitors will experience the stimulation of their audio sense and will be asked to share what they can see in their mind while music is being played, which would be remarkable to be captured on film. A thesis, on the other hand, makes a specific case, it tries to prove something. One way to tell a thesis from a topic: if it doesn't have an active verb, it's almost certainly still a topic. Controversial. That doesn't mean something like “Abortionists should be shot” or “George W. Bush's election was illegitimate” — it means that it has to be possible for an intelligent person to disagree with your thesis. If everyone agrees on first sight, your thesis is too obvious, and not worth writing about. It also has to be something you can reasonably argue about: it's not enough merely to give an unsupported opinion. Analytical, not evaluative. A college English paper isn't the place to praise or blame works of literature: theses like “Paradise Lost is an enduring expression of the human spirit” or “The Sound and the Fury isn't successful in its choice of narrative techniques” aren't appropriate.
