...NAIROBI SCHOOL OF BUSINESS MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION TERM PAPER TOPIC: ISSUES IN GLOBAL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT DSM 602: By DR. YABS NGETICH MONICAH D61/69197/2013 INTRODUCTION The scope of strategic business issues faced by companies and organizations striving to operate and be successful internationally has widened due to an increasingly broad geographic scope and the increasing complexity of technology. Strategic issues arise not only through the formal, periodic strategic planning processes in companies but also can, and quite often do arise unpredictably due to new insights, unexpected advances in technology or competitive activities in the market place. All companies have their way of identifying and dealing with these being their most critical strategic questions. However, theprocess of managing emerging strategic issues is typically non-structured, not necessarily optimally suited to enable the effective identification of the most critical questions and the appropriate allocation of top management attention and corporate intelligence support to answer the identified strategic questions. Despite the past research during 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s into the domain of strategic issues (SI), strategic issue management (SIM), and strategic issue management systems (SIMS) there is a scarcity applicable approaches for firms to use in improving their attention focus and distribution in strategic issue management processes. The underpinnings of strategic management hinge on managers...

Geoengineering: a Global Issue

... 4. Environmental Issues & Science 5. Human Impact 6. Ethical & Justice Issues 7. Conclusion 8. Bibliography Geoengineering: A global issue Essay Abstract Geoengineering is a set of new technologies which aim to change the environment in human favour. Considering the technology is nascent, the morality, ethics, technological knowhow and the human impact are all uncertain as they relate to geoengineering. This paper argues that on these grounds, the geoengineering issue should be a global issue. Local governments fail to implement this technology effectively. The subsidiarity test should be passed when it relates to the geoengineering issue. Introduction With rising CO2 levels, changing weather patterns and an ever increasing intensity of weather events, governments and environmental groups are trying to address the global warming issue. There are many theories on how to deal with climate change; from a reduction in pollution to carbon capture. Geoengineering is a relatively new idea in the field of science which “describes this array of technologies that aim, through large-scale and deliberate modifications of the Earth’s energy balance, to reduce temperatures and counteract anthropogenic climate change.” (Bracmort et all., 2011: 1) The vast majority of technology is nascent and at a theoretical stage but it has the potential to affect populations and climate on a global scale. (Bracmort et all., 2011: 1) Any issue that has the ability to...

Global Issues In Volkswagen

...1. Climate change. Volkswagen is facing sever environmental and climatic issues since its co2 emission scandal came into picture. The company using ‘defeat software’ to cheat the norms of emission was one thing that has led to many reparation losses as well as devaluation of the stocks of VW. Therefore the company now wants a sustainable climatic policy in line with EPA so that such kind of challenges are not faced in future. 2. Noise, health, biodiversity & Environment impact The company’s emission scandal has led a great environmental impact. The overall impact would be less but if you consider the impact in Europe alone than it is significant. Melting Point: the Issue of Global Warming

...Melting Point: The Issue of Global Warming What is Global Warming? Well, it is just that, our planet is getting warmer. Due to increased carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in our atmosphere, we are retaining excess heat that usually is radiated into space. This excess heat that is being captured by our CO2 enriched atmosphere is now causing a rise in temperature that could affect nearly every aspect of life. If we do not stop our excessive carbon dioxide output, major changes could happen to our environment and our economic well being. You emit CO2 emissions almost everywhere you go, every time you drive your car, have a fire in your fireplace, and even when you use your gas stove to cook a meal, you are producing green house gases that spread into our atmosphere. When you are using these items they release green house gases such as carbon dioxide, steam (H2O), and methane (Broder). These gases trap the heat in our atmosphere that is usually dispersed into outer space. This is causing our global temperature to rise. But unlike the other green house gases, CO2 stays in the atmosphere for “thousands of years” instead of the “weeks or years” that the other green house gases make residency in our atmosphere. This labels CO2 as the main contributor to global warming (Broder). Initially, for some people the idea of global warming isn’t such a bad idea. But the suspected outcomes of global warming far outweigh the pro’s that some may see. There is evidence that global warming has been...

Issues of Global Warming and Industrial Pollution

...of international legal instruments, specialized organs, and agencies at the global and regional levels to respond to identified problems in each of the three areas. Often these have seemed to develop in isolation from one another. Yet the links between human rights, health and environmental protection were apparent at least from the first international conference on the human environment, held in Stockholm in 1972. “Man is both creature and molder of his environment, which gives him physical sustenance and affords him the opportunity for intellectual, moral, social and spiritual growth. . . . Both aspects of man’s environment, the natural and the man-made, are essential to his well-being and to the enjoyment of basic human rights even the right to life itself.” Therefore, it becomes very important to study the impacts of industrial pollution and threats to bio diversity closely while studying about Human Rights. Industrial pollution is one of the main causes of pollution worldwide. Industrial activities are a major source of air, water and land pollution, leading to illness and loss of life all over the world. The World Health Organization estimates that outdoor air pollution alone accounts for around 2% of all heart and lung diseases, about 5% of all lung cancers, and about 1% of all chest infections. Apart from health hazards, water pollution due to discharge of contaminated water and Global Warming are some of the harmful effects of industrial pollution. Industry...

It is estimated that some 1.1 billion people are affected currently by violent conflict or at extremely high risk of being affected in the future. The persistence of conflict has ripple effect far and wide. ...The Global News Stations Blue Ranney ReactionPaper-RanneyB-FA13 Middle East In the Middle East (Southwest, Asia) there has been a war going on for over hundreds of years and many people have lost their lives and some live on to tell their stories. It’s not every day that we hear about everything going on over in the Southwestern region, but there are all sorts of unfathomable crimes taking place as we speak today. I’ve seen on CNBC nightly news the war crimes taking place in Syria. There have been over 180 Syrians killed and over 200 women and children kept as hostages. This is a war crime led by rebels teamed with the government. If it wasn’t for CNBC news I wouldn’t have known about this story. There are numerous different ways to hear about what’s going on in the world today. You can read magazines, watch TV, and get information from the internet. I personally like to stay up with the world news using the internet. Three foundations that I would like to focus on are “Human Rights Watch, NPR, and Alternet”. My first thoughts of these sites, I drew a blank, and didn’t really know what to expect from them. The one similarity that I recognized is how they are funded foundations through charities and donations. The” Human Rights Watch” and “NPR” are both funded...

Global Issues

...GI units 1,3 and 4 Through out the assigned Global Issues units certain themes seem to keep coming out that are vital in the world of international business. The emergence of the B.R.I.C is a key ingredient in understanding and planning for the future of international business. Also important is the growing population and the resources needed to sustain these numbers of people. We must also realize the effects that international business has had on the environment and what those effects will mean for us in the future. Finally and probably most all encompassing is the idea of the world evolving into one cohesive unit, better known as globalization of industry. BRIC is a grouping acronym that refers to the countries of Brazil, Russia, India, and China that are deemed to all be at a similar stage of newly advanced economic development. Goldman Sachs argues that the economic potential of Brazil, Russia, India, and China is such that they could become among the four most dominant economies by the year 2050. These countries encompass over 25% of the world's land coverage and 40% of the world's population and hold a combined GDP of 18.486 trillion dollars. On almost every scale, they would be the largest entity on the global stage. These four countries are among the biggest and fastest growing emerging markets. Now that we have properly defined what the BRIC is, we must now step back and view this on a global stage. From a global business standpoint we cannot downplay the emerging...

...1. Most Malaysian Moslems take Islam very seriously, and follow its precepts as a lifestyle as much as a religion. Because the mosque is regularly visited, it may serve as a place to socialize and nurture business contacts within the Moslem community, because of the influence of Hindu and Chinese spiritual beliefs, Malaysian Moslems (like their Indonesian coreligionists to the south) are more likely than Moslems elsewhere to believe in ghosts and the spirit world. While remaining true to the essential monotheistic beliefs of Islam, Malaysians nonetheless recognize spiritual forces or attributes of the soul in a variety objects. The presence of ghosts, witches, and other spiritual entities remain a real part of life for many Malaysians, and the need to placate these spirits affects all aspects of life, including work. A common mistake of foreigners is to view Malaysia as a traditional Islamic society and therefore to play down the importance of these supernatural forces, to criticize such beliefs, or to mistakenly reduce their importance to that of mere superstition. Fear of ghosts or the believed presence of spiritual forces can prevent employees from coming to work or prevent the conclusion of a business deal.  A vital element of Malaysian culture, as with most Asian cultures, is the concept of face. In Malaysian society to 'lose face', that is to lose control of one’s emotions or to show embarrassment in public, is perceived as a negative behavior. Malaysians will use a number...

Poverty: a Global Issue

...POVERTY: A GLOBAL ISSUE Charles Williams Introduction to Sociology – SOC100 October 29, 2011 1. Describe how society defines poverty. Poverty is a condition in which a person or community is deprived of, or lacks the essentials for a minimum standard of well-being and life. Since poverty is understood in many senses, these essentials may be material resources such as food, safe drinking water, and shelter, or they may be social resources such as access to information, education, health care, social status, political power, or the opportunity to develop meaningful connections with other people in society. Poverty is the state for the majority of the world’s people and nations. Behind the increasing interconnectedness promised by globalization are global decisions, policies, and practices. These are typically influenced, driven, or formulated by the rich and powerful. These can be leaders of rich countries or other global actors such as multinational corporations, institutions, and influential people. In the face of such enormous external influence, the governments of poor nations and their people are often powerless. As a result, in the global context, a few get wealthy while the majority struggle. Poverty is also characterized by a chronic shortage of economic, social and political participation, relegating individuals to exclusion as social beings, preventing access to the benefits of economic and social development and thereby limiting their cultural development...
