CH. 3: Global Supply Chain Purchase Homework

1. Go online and find one product that is native to one of the BRIC or VISTA countries (see Chapter One for a list of those countries if you don’t remember) and that you are sure is not carried in Lubbock area stores. This should be a product from one of those countries – NOT a product from an American company in one of those countries (for example, a soft drink that Coca-Cola sells specifically in Brazil or a special chicken sandwich sold by McDonald’s in India). Write a brief description of the product (including the brand name) and bring either the product or a picture of the product to class.

Redro Fish Spread is a native product in South Africa that was introduced as a substitute for Britain’s Peck’s Anchovette. The product became so popular once released that it spent thirty years as a monopoly in the spread industry. The spread comprises of fresh Anchovies, Mackerel, and Pilchards and is marketed as a fun snack for children.

2. What cultural or social barriers may be keeping the product from enjoying success in the US?

When Americans choose a spread to put on sandwiches or crackers, anything salter than mayo or butter is uncommon. A cultural barrier to this product is America’s desire for sweeter spreads such as Peanut Butter and different types of Jellies. Geographic locations also depict the distribution of this salty spread. Fish spreads and concentrated yeast extracts are more commonly found the eastern hemisphere where saltier spreads are in demand. America simply doesn’t have the taste for these products.

3. How can you mitigate these barriers?

One way to mitigate these barriers is to introduce the product in grocery stores that sell foreign food such as World Market. Once individuals become accustomed to the taste of the product, demand will go up and word about the product will spread.

...and political. Some have said there is no “geography” in this current global environment. Some issues for supply chains in a global environment are: 1) more economic   and political risk; 2) shorter product lifecycles and 3) the blurring of traditional organization boundaries. Another issue is global competition for sources of supply and demand.   Traditionally underdeveloped countries such as China and India have become enabled and can participate in the global economy much more readily. Developing companies such as BRIC and VISTA have developed technology and have been outsourced to these countries. Technology has played a major part in time and distance being compressed. Collaboration opportunities with individuals and companies throughout the globe have increased.   Flow of commerce is multidirectional. 2) Mass retailers like Walmart have been growing larger and larger. These organizations develop, design, produce, promote, and distribute their own products are using their size and power to impact the supply chain to their own advantage. Consumer product companies are giving special privileges to these large retailers and offering customized distribution services; allowing them to run more efficiently and more effectively. 3) The impact of the consumer is much more direct for supply chains because the consumer has placed increased demands at the retail level for an expanded variety of products and services. 4) The deregulation of several important sectors...

The industry is split in two sectors: full-service restaurants (FSR) and limited-service restaurants (LSR). FSRs typically have a wait-staff; LSRs do not have wait-staff. The top five countries, in terms of total number of foodservice outlets, are: China, India, Brazil, Japan, and the US. The industry is of low concentration. The 2013 global labor force was 62.4M employees, up 2.4%. In accordance with Porter’s Five Forces framework, the forces that shape competition in the restaurant industry have a moderate to high impact on competitiveness. There is a moderate threat of new entrants and a high threat of substitutes. Buyers have a high degree of bargaining power and suppliers have a moderate degree of bargaining power. The restaurant industry is highly competitive and experiences intense rivalry. In terms of macro-environmental factors, emerging markets around the world over are having an impact on how restaurants execute strategy both domestically and abroad. The growth of the middle class in emerging markets, such as China and India, presents a new demographic and an opportunity...

...Introduction The business as per the generally acceptable notion is a profit making entity and takes into account function of monetary transactions as the criteria measure for the success of its operational activities. Corporate social responsibility in the past is considered as unwanted activities which are imposed on business by law and governing bodies as unnecessary burden which is against the basic principle of profit making for the business organizations. Business organizations have been considered as bodies that meet the demand of the consumers by supplying their goods and services, and have the responsibility for generating wealth and employment opportunities. (Mette Morsing & Carmen Thyssen, 2003) In recent times after the increase in concern about the ecological imbalances and the impact of business on the environment, this above view is however changing and more and more entities are taking corporate social responsibility activities and few of them are also able to align their business goals in order to generate profits. The modern business also debates over the business responsibility towards the Shareholder’s and owners versus Stakeholders (employees, consumers, suppliers and shareholders) in the present day scenario. After taking the consideration of responsibility towards stakeholders, businesses are coming closer to the society and are altering the function of business organizations taking into considerations the business’ wider role. The wider role define...
