Say No to GMO

More than 60-percent of the food an average American eats contains one or more GMO. A genetically modified organism, or a GMO, is any organism that has been altered by genetic engineering. This is the process of manually adding new DNA to an organism. GMOs are unnatural and have negative impacts on our environment and well-being. The elimination of these artificial organisms could aid in the growth of a more organic world. Today, there are more GMO crops produced in America than conventional crops.
Some may argue that since there is a surplus of the genetically modified organism crops, and they are more readily available for a cheaper price. Compared to organic produce, non-organic produce is more affordable and convenient to a majority of the population. However, these organic crops would be just as abundant and affordable if they were not being replaced with GMOs by companies such as Monsanto. The mass production of GMO crops has taken away from the production of the organic crops, preventing a surplus of them. The price of organic crops is on average greater than the price of GMO crops due to the fact that the government subsidizes less money to be given to organic and local farms. The funds given is in favor to large scale operational farms who can produce more at a lower cost. If the money was given in favor to the all-natural, organic and local farms, their products would be more accessible to more consumers. (Lynas)
Biodiversity has been and continues to be negatively affected by the use of genetically modified organisms. Biodiversity is the existence of many different species of plants in an environment. For example, in the past there were 307 different varieties of corn crops, and presently, there are less than twelve. According to Science Policy Analyst, Bill Freese, companies such as Monsanto are monopolizing seed farms by only offering
