Investigating 3 Unbelievable Mystery Novels That Will Leave You Begging For More

“A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma”
This immortal phrase by Winston Churchill conveyed that while the tactics of the Russian government were beyond comprehension, there was perhaps a greater unknown truth that wasn’t as yet evident but was nonetheless intriguing to the casual outsider.

Although, the above is an allusion to politics, the same can be applied to the everyday unknowns that we encounter.

Being the mystery aficionados that we are, we’ve journeyed right from the intrepid and meddling ways of Scooby Doo and the gang to the nail biting turn of events in Gillian Flynn’s ‘Gone Girl’. Our thirst …show more content…
Every twist in this popular detective story, spawned from the fascinating mind of celebrated novelist Stewart Giles, will catch you completely off guard. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The story begins when the body of a young woman is discovered in her bed. No other clues except a mysterious note reading ‘I am sorry Martin’ decorate the tragic scene. A few hours later, the local police are urgently requested at a house a couple of miles away. They arrive to find a young girl brutally attacked and barely breathing. A few paces from her lies the body of her mother.

A man, who identifies himself as the father, is curled up in the corner of the room, shivering uncontrollably in an almost cathartic state. Drenched in blood but completely unharmed he is hauled to the station for further questioning. He reveals that his name is Martin Willow.

Following these puzzling circumstances, detective Jason Smith is appointed to spearhead the investigation. After hitting a complete cul-de-sac in the case he finally unravels a terrifying pattern in these morbid events. On Christmas day, the young girl awakens from her comatose state and divulges a crucial piece of evidence- a snippet of a song she’d heard just before she was …show more content…
A Dish Best Eaten Cold

The story revolves around a young woman named Liz who finds herself heartbroken when her long term relationship meets an abrupt end. She decides to move to a new town and embrace fresh beginnings.

It wouldn’t be much of a story if it ended there, would it? Her painful past tenaciously follows her to her new life when she is asked by the local police to assist them in investigating the savage murder of a woman named Joanna. Things threaten to burst at the seams when Liz discovers that Joanna is the woman responsible for betraying her trust and stealing Liz’s man.

The events gradually unfold to reveal some bitter secrets and a haunting past. It becomes evident that Liz is being framed for the murder of Joanna. An unknown entity presents a dangerous risk to Liz’s safety.

The book is so eloquently put and is told through the perspective of three dominating women in the story - Liz, Joanna and Molly, a woman who is the mother of the head solicitor. Each twist leaps at you from the dark. You will never see the end coming even with the largest magnifying glass to rival Sherlock’s himself.

...dolls, and extra-ordinarily beautiful girls, came about the idea of the female body. Whether you are a believer of creationalism, scientology, or evolutionism, somehow we all came about with the perception of the “perfect” female. Women have always been seen, and portrayed as a sex symbol, and usually the disobedient one. Dating back to B.C and the story of Adam and Eve, Eve was the naked one who bit into the fruit that god told her was forbidden. Why couldn’t it have been Adam that caused such scandal, and was the cause for destruction, and crime in the world, and not Eve? From the believed beginning of time, to present day, women have really only progressed a small amount up the social ladder. Today, women are looked down upon, if they are slightly more over weight then what is considered “normal,” if they are “underweight”, “darker skin color”, too “pale”, “flat chested”, big boned, “thick,” or because of their ethnicities and backgrounds. So what exactly defines the “perfect female?” Is it the girls featured on “Girls Gone Wild” in Cancun, or the half naked models posing for Victoria’s Secret? Or is it the perfectly put together “Miss America” pageant queens? Or is it the Hollywood actresses with billion dollar dresses, and priceless jewelry? Or the well toned, well defined professional team cheerleaders, and dancers we watch? WE, speaking for us “average” women, who often tend to idolize, and carry pieces of all these girls within us, and envy them, for not being...

Week 8 Assignment 2 Psy 110

...I have chosen to write about the TV show Drop Dead Diva, since it is my latest Netflix obsession. I am almost done binge watching all six seasons, and I am hooked. The show itself is not what I would call violent, since it is about an aspiring model who is killed and returns as an overweight lawyer, and has to live out the rest of that life; it’s more of a girl’s comedy-drama. In one of the episodes, Jane, who is the main character, is helping out a client who is trying to sue a “girls gone wild” producer for releasing a video of his 18 year old daughter showing her breasts. While in mediation, to try to settle, the producer makes a comment about his daughter that was repulsive and the father punched the producer in the face. He let out his anger, not only for is daughters negligence, but his anger towards the producer, through a violent act of physical harm. The show is based in California, at a law firm, and both the father and the producer in this scene are white male. The father seems to be in his 40’s and the producer in his 30’s. The scene takes place at the esteemed law firm, in the conference room. Since this show is considered a drama, I think that, by having an angry father hit the producer, it is scratching a needed itch in this scenario. Nobody wants to see their child embarrassed, especially when it involves nudity that is about to be displayed in store worldwide. The producer is a jerk, and the comment about the daughter’s breasts were inappropriate. I think...

Procter and Gamble vs Peta

...to pressure from PETA. In response to aggressive campaigns, all three have issued strict humane animal handling guidelines to suppliers of beef, pork, and chicken and enforce those standards with unannounced audits of production farms and processing plants. PETA has been known to use pretty crude tactics. In one instance, a viral ad featuring scantily clad women with cow udders instead of breasts was distributed in the UK as part of a campaign against milk drinking and production. PETA had hoped to air a television version of the ad on the ABC network in the United States during the Super Bowl, but was told the execution “falls outside boundaries of good taste.” Mimicking television shows like Girls Gone Wild, in which women are encouraged to disrobe for cameras, PETA’s “Milk Gone Wild” ad shows models dancing in a bar, surrounded by men drinking glasses of milk. When the women tear...

Rihanna's Personality

...Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born February 20, 1988), known by her stage name Rihanna is a Barbadian recording artist, actress and fashion designer. She lived the life of a normal island girl going to Combermere, a top sixth form school. Rihanna won numerous beauty pageants and performed Mariah Carey "Hero" in a school talent show. Her life changed forever when one of her friends introduced her to Evan Rodgers, a producer from New York who was in Barbados for a vacation with his wife, who is a native. Rodgers arranged for her to go to New York to meet Jay-Z, CEO of Def Jam Records. He heard her sing and knew she was going to be incredibly successful. She was 16 when she was signed to Def Jam. Since then, she's amassed phenomenal success. After watching Rihanna’s 2013 Grammy performance of her hit song ‘Stay’ it led me to conclude that Rihanna has a Strong personality, an assumption which is based off the application of Evolutionary psychology and Existential psychology concepts. As she sang, the audience could feel her raw emotion, it didn’t feel rehearsed it felt real, which was only suitable since the song can be seen as a representation of the current dilemma she currently faces in her love life with ex lover Chris Brown. Existential Psychology is the study of human existence, however Rollo May focuses on concepts like freedom, responsibility, Authenticity, Death, courage, anxiety, destiny, dasein , daimonic , etc. All of which can be found in the traces of rihanna’s personality that...

Literary Analysis

...Literary Analysis of Gone with the Wind Literary Analysis of Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell Gone With the Wind is the only novel written by Margaret Mitchell for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. The novel follows Scarlett O’Hara, a spoiled sixteen year old just before the start of the Civil War through the war and Reconstruction (1861-1870). Major themes throughout the novel are: The importance of land; love of money; survival; wanting what you cannot have; and the change of a culture (Mitchell, 1936). Scarlett’s life revolved around the parties she would attend at neighboring plantations, flirting with the young men of the county and pursuing her childhood crush, Ashley Wilkes. Scarlett was a spoiled. In 1860 sixteen year old Scarlett O’Hara lived on Tara, her father’s plantation in Georgia. She is self-centered girl who seemed to care little for the feelings of others and who was used to getting everything she wanted. Her father, Gerald was an Irish immigrant who had prospered in his new land. Her mother, Ellen was from an aristocratic French family. Scarlett had two sisters, Suellen and Careen to whom she paid little mind. Mammy was Ellen’s house servant and the girl’s nanny. Mammy was always concerned that the girls be proper ladies like their mother. The O’Hara plantation had many slaves and was prosperous (Mitchell, 1936). ...Cat in the in rain My assignment will contain an analysis of the short story: “Cat in the rain” written by Ernst Hemmingway. In my analysis and discussion I will focus on literary modernism and the lost generation, what typical features of the period, of the generation and of Hemingway’s style we see in the text, besides the text in from the 1920’s. The story is written in third person omniscient narrator, who deals with several different characters appearing in the short story. In the story we follow a couple and particularly the woman, and her vision on the relationship between her and her husband. She deals with many different issues, which appears in the way she is described throughout the story, and by the way she interacts among the other characters. The couple is on vacation in Italy, where they are staying at a hotel. The story takes place a rainy day. The American woman is looking outside the window, when she suddenly sees a cat hidden under a table from getting wet by the rain. She decides to go outside, to save the cat. On her way, to rescue the cat from the rain, she comes across the padrone of the hotel. He sends a maid out to help the American girl. When they gets to the table, where the cat were suppose to be, it was strangely enough gone, in proportion to how strange it is for a cat to walk into the rain, when they hate water. When she returns to her room, she is al of the sudden sad and annoyed. Without knowing why, she just wanted the cat so bad. When she...

Gender Roles

...Gender Role Analysis Mindy Brown SOC/333 February 17, 2014 Erica Lloyd Gender Role Analysis Gender roles and stereotypes are often intertwined. Stereotypes can be positive or negative, and are speculations about the roles of each gender. The stereotypical female role is to marry, have children, and take care of the household duties. Stereotype of the male role is to be the family provider financially. Children learn these from adults as stereotypes and gender roles are passed from one generation to another. This paper will analyze gender roles shaped by education, norms of the government, its laws and its policies, and in the workplace. Gender Shaped by Education Gender roles and stereotypes are often reinforced in the classroom setting. Children learn these gender biases from their teachers and the materials used for learning. Some teachers have an unconscious bias toward a gender and make assumptions based on the gender's behavior and actions. Girls are expected to be polite and studious while boys are rational, unruly, and boisterous. Bias may also be social as well. Teachers may socially categorize children by race, class, and religion. For example, they may perceive African American girls to be more outspoken and louder than Caucasian girls. Teacher typically targeted boys of the Caucasian race as they asked and answered most questions (Scantlebury, 2009). Teachers may ask them more complicated questions than the girls. If they are unable to answer the question...

...CHARACTERS: Anastacia Agueda Agueda’s daughter Don Badoy Montiya Voltaire – the grandson   THEME: * Life is always full of regret, for we always realize what we have when it is gone. * Love was blinded and it turned into hatred * Love cannot be based on passion alone. CONFLICT: External conflict, Man vs. Man. We can see that Agueda and Badoy after having a bad married life with each other, used to regret the past that they’ve been together and it is revealed with their hatred for each other and how Agueda used to describe the devil to her granddaughter as if it was Badoy and same way as Badoy describing the witch in the mirror to his grandson as if it was Agueda. LITERARY MOVEMENT: GOTHIC FICTION with REALISM The story happened in the year of 1847 and it has a little blend of horror and fiction because of the superstitious belief of fortune telling as well as the devil and witch that will come out in the mirror if everything in the ritual will go wrong. ANALYSIS: Agueda and Badoy’s bitter marriage all began on that May night. Agueda and Badoy are two, completely different people. Agueda is a girl ahead of her time. She is bold and liberated unlike most girls her age. She stands out from the broad range of followers of her era. The tragedy is when Badoy’s heart forgets how much he felt for Agueda. The tragedy is how both were not careful enough to mend their drifting marriage. Both Badoy and Agueda perceived their marriage to be a taste of hell. Instead...

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been Literary Analysis

...Milano English 1102 Professor Crowther 9/11/2014 " “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” Literary Analysis “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” is a story that all teenage girls can relate to. It really reminded the readers how difficult life can be for a teenage girl because of all the pressure and feelings that come along with these angst-filled years. “Her name was Connie. She was fifteen and she had a quick nervous giggling habit of craning her neck to glance into mirrors, or checking other people’s faces to make sure her own was all right” (145 para. 1). Joyce Carol Oates does an amazing job creating such scenes that do happen to girls in their early teens years. In the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?,” the main character Connie deals with many coming of age situations including her parents and sister, social situations, and Arnold Friend, a boy. Connie’s mother is always trying to bring her down. She always compares her to June, Connie’s older sister. “Why don’t you keep your room clean like your sister?…” (145 para. 2). This can lead Connie to having a horrible self esteem issue since her mother obviously does not see the best her youngest daughter can be. She is very jealous of how beautiful of a young woman Connie is becoming, and that gives her a reason to tear her down. “Her mother had been pretty once too…but now her looks were gone and that was why she was always after Milano 2 Connie.” (145 para. 1). Her father is never really around...

The New Girl Analyze

...Analysis and interpretation of “The new Girl” Allison is a girl at the age of ten, who lives on Prospect Street with her parents and likes to play with Barbies and listen to Hall and Oates. Prospect Street is a street placed in a lower middle-class white neighborhood, where most of the houses are about seventy years old. In the start of the story the environment is described: It’s a hot day, the sun is shinning and everything is burning. The burning part is a symbol of this intense conflict, which is about to appear later in the text between the new girl, the narrator and Allison. Allison’s mother does not like the new neighbors, it seems. She is prejudiced against them, because of the color of their skin. She thinks that they are going to ruin their house, meaning that the new neighbors will make the prices of the neighborhood fall, because no white person wants to share the same street with a ‘nigger.’ Allison has of course inherited the same hatred towards African Americans. You see that clearly in the text; “I said get out of here, nigger, or I’ll beat you up.” As for the narrator: he doesn’t feel that same spitefulness that Allison and her mother have for African Americans, at all. I am by the way assuming that the narrator is a boy, from the three facts that the narrator doesn’t share Allison’s interest in Barbies, they have been pretending to be married and then there is the fact that they are already friends, yet the narrator is wondering if she likes him. The...

From what I can tell, the narrator or main character, Holden, isn’t very optimistic about his life. When I first read a couple lines of this paragraph, I thought to myself “this book is going to be terrible” because Holden didn’t really grab my attention like I thought. |     Chapter 2    “ Have you yourself communicated with them? …..   And how do you think they’ll take the news? Well …. They’ll be pretty irritated about it; … This is about the fourth school I’ve gone to… “Boy?” I said. I also say “Boy? Quite a lot. Partly because I have a lousy vocabulary and partly because I act quite young for my age sometimes” (Salinger 9.) |  At the beginning of this quote, Holden is talking to Mr. Old Spencer. Mr. old Spencer is asking Holden if he told his parents that he got expelled from school. Holden seems to know what his problems in school are, but he doesn’t want to do anything. He likes to make himself seem like a bad boy, but it just makes him look stupid. |   Chapter 3“The whole time he roomed next...

Cameron Willingham Case

...Evan Stabolitis Professor Max Seymour Political Science 6th April, 2014 Case Cameron Willingham Willingham was immediately prosecuted for arson and the murder of his three little girls to cover up the supposed “abusing” of them. Stacy Kuykendall said there was no way he abused the children and that they were spoiled rotten. Think about it, how could a man abuse two twin one year old little girls and a two year old little girl. According to his wife he was also the best the father she had ever seen and the most loving man she’d ever met. When these things are put together, there is no way he could have done it, there is no reason why. Some of the evidence gathered against Willingham was charcoal starter fluid which was under the grill under the front porch which was melted, but some starter fluid was found inside the door next to the grill. This evidence shouldn’t have held any weight because of the fire hose pressure probably blowing some of the fluid into the house while trying to put the fire out. There was three starting points in the house where an accelerant was supposedly put to start the fire because of the marks of a “fast and hot” start of the fire. Later in the case a fellow inmate of Willingham testified against him saying that Willingham had indeed told him he did start the fire. The inmate that gave this information should have not have been of any importance because him and Willingham had gotten into an argument days before. The inmates background was not...
