How we are affected by death, and how we accept that it is inevitable seems to be a theme for many short stories and poems. Death brings a struggle between the dying and the family and friends of the dying. All the loved ones of the dying want them to do is fight, to encourage them to stay positive, even when there is no chance of survival. We want to be selfish and want to spend as much time as we can with them before they die. Just as the two poets in these poems do. In Dog’s Death by John Updike, the dog wants to lie down, to hide so she can die peacefully but the family rushes her to the vet to try and save her. Updike was “widely recognized as one of the most accomplished and prolific stylists of his generation, Updike has emerged as a short-story writer and novelist of major importance in American letters” (Parks, J., Peck, D., 2006). He was born on March 18, 1932 in Reading, Pennsylvania and died on January 27, 2009 in Danvers, Massachusetts. (Clugston, 2010) The formalist approach of literary criticism is the type where the critic looks at the structure, imagery, tone, and other tools. This is done to see how these things work together to give the reader the full experience of the piece. The formalist approach is the most widely used of literary criticisms. ...John Updike’s “The First Kiss” uses a great number of rhetorical devices such as monstrous metaphors, dreary to encouraging diction, and descriptive symbolism. These three rhetoric devices help Updike get his theme across that baseball is meant to be fun no matter how demanding it is to the players and the fans throughout the season. Although Updike’s ultimate theme was positive and optimistic, he used a combination of a gloomy and elevating tone to get to his theme. He started off with his gloomy and remorseful tone talking about the previous season and the Red Sox’s late season blunder falling to the Yankees but then he moves onto the fans preparing for the next season and the eagerness that is behind the “Fenway Faithful”. Updike uses words like “unraveling” and phrases like “dreadful days” and “so dank an opening day” to show that the Red Sox will “never get [the fans] to care again and to point out the downheartedness that filled the fans the previous season. However, by the end of the short essay, Updike says “this is fun” and that the sport is filled with “innumerable potential redemptions and curious disappointments”. Then when the two managers shake hands and the “many-headed monster booed furiously” at Zimmer, he just “laughed” and shrugged it off. She cannot get the idea of the killing out of her head. She seems like she is praying to Hansel to help her with her guilt. She seems to want to wash away the pain of killing even though she knows what she did was right. 2. Suicide Note The speaker apologizes to her parents for not being a strong man. She believes that if she were a boy her parents would not have been disappointed with her less than perfect grade point average. The attitude she displays to her parents is on of despair and resignation. 3. The World is Too Much With Us The speaker feels that people have lost touch with nature because of modernization of the world. The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece. She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit, at the top of the backs of her legs.
