Google Analytics
Google analytics is a service the Google Company gives to clients. Through this service Google wants to attract more of the traffic in the internet to get more site visitors into customers for the site owner. The owner of the site can use Google Analytics to learn which online marketing initiatives are cost effective and how visitors actually interact with the site. It shows how the site owners can make informed site design improvements, drive targeted traffic, and increase your conversions and profits. Google Analytics uses a first-party cookie and Java script codes to collect information about visitors and track your advertising campaign data. Google Analytics anonymously tracks how visitors interact with a website, including where they came from, what they did on the site, and whether they completed any of the site`s conversion goals. Analytics also keep track of your e-commerce data, and combines this with campaign and conversion information to provide insight into the performance of your advertising campaigns. All this information is presented in an easy to read, yet through manner, through intuitive visual reports. Google Analytics won`t affect the performance or the appearance of your website and there are no extra files to host on your website.

Some of the things Google Analytics do are:

1. Goals Track Sales and Conversions - Measure your site engagement goals against: threshold levels that you define.
2. Complete Campaign tracking Capabilities - Track emails campaigns, banner ads, offline ads and more.
3. Integrated with Ad Words and AdSense- Optimize your Ad Words performance with post-click data on your keywords, search queries, match type and more. AdSense reports show publishers which site content generates the most revenue.
4. Ecommerce Reporting - Trace transactions to campaigns and keywords, get loyalty and latency metrics, and identify your best revenue sources.
5. Mobile Tracking - Track mobile websites, mobile apps and web enabled mobile devices, including both high end and non-java script enabled phones.
6. Flash, video and social Network application tracking- Track usage of your Ajax, Flash, social networking and Web 2.0 applications.
7. Internal site search- Understand visitor intent, find out what your customers are really looking for and speed up time to conversion. (Google)
Google Analytics keeps track and makes it easy for you to learn precisely what`s happening. Google Analytics shows you how to track different market segments and analyze conversion rates, and reveals advanced techniques such as marketing-campaign tracking, a valuable feature that most people overlook. (O`Reilly;, 2010)

Understanding Google Analytics Time Calculations

Measuring time on a website can be hard, really hard. Every web analytics tools have issues, and that include Google Analytics. Here are some tools and how they work:
1. Understanding Engagement Hits- The key to understanding Google Analytics time calculations understands the data that is sent to Google. We affectionately refer to this data as HITS. I know, that`s a terrible term to use when talking about analytics. But they really are hits. Data hits are the image requests sent to Google Analytics. There are six different types of data hits in Google Analytics:
a) Page view hits
b) Event hits
c) Ecommerce transaction hits
d) Ecommerce transaction item hits
e) User defined hits (this is the predecessor of custom variables)
f) Social plugin hits
While they are all data hits they are not all engagement hits. An engagement hit is any hit that is not marked as ‘’non-interaction’’ and is not filled only with custom variable information. This means that the hit has at least page information, ecommerce transaction information, event information and social tracking information.
2. How Time on Page is Calculated- Time on page is calculated in two different ways. The calculation depends if the visit has one page view OR if the visit has multiple page views.
a) When there are multiple page views in a visit- If there are multiple page views during a visit then the time calculation is based on the start time between the current page and the start time of the next page hit.
b) When there is only One Page view in the Visit- If no other page is viewed during the visit, Google Analytics use the time between the initial page hit and the last engagement hit that follows the page hit. Time on Page= (time of last “engagement hit” on page) - (time of first hit from page).
Conclusion
In today`s world, computers and fast internet has made possible a wide range of different ways companies can save money and make money. Definitely if a website owner wants to get numbers about how a site is working Google Analytics is a great free tool any web site owner can use.
