The article I chose for assignment 2 is, “Google Is fixing The ‘Permanently Closed Problem’”. This article is found on marketingland.com and is written by Joy Hawkins on February 26, 2016. The article discusses the problems Google has been facing with their “permanently closed” feature that appears on the listings found on Google maps. The problem is that some of the business’s that appear on the listings as “permanently closed” are not actually closed. Google has gotten thousands of complaints from businesses that feel inconvenienced by this mistake. Most of these mistakes have happened because businesses forget to inform Google that they have moved locations. To solve this problem Google has added a new “moved” feature that is connected to Google maps. With the new “moved” feature, companies’ photos, reviews and followers can still be intact with their new location. The article concludes with some advice on how to use the “moved” feature. This article relates to place, which is a core component of the marketing mix. Place refers to all the activities necessary to get the product to the right customer. The listing of businesses found on Google maps is an effective way for a company to be reached by its customers and promote their products. When a business is wrongly labeled “permanently closed” it is affects the place component of the marketing mix because it is prevents the customers from consuming the business’s products. Many people may overlook the importance of this component of the marketing mix because it is not as readily visible from the consumer perspective. However, place is what delivers the product to the customers.

Uburger Goes to China

...UBurger Goes to China UBurger is a fast-casual food chain that is committed to serving fresh high quality products to a discerning populace. They specialize in a selection of burgers topped with fresh produce and sauces with three choices of protein - beef, chicken, and vegetarian patties. In addition to their staple burgers, they also serve french fries and milkshakes. We would like to take UBurger to Shanghai, China to profit from the market for American fast food which has emerged in the industrialized country. UBurger is not the first to follow down this path; many others such as McDonald’s and YUM! Brands have done the same. We feel that these other brands have left an opportunity for a healthier line of food to strive. Given that UBurger does not have the same network of international support as these other brands, a joint-venture would be the best mode of entry to this new market. Real Kung Fu - China’s largest fast food restaurant - would become partners with UBurger in this new venture. As the UBurger Brand grows, we will open additional stores across the nation. Within three years, we will have opened a new location in Beijing and then spread out from there, eventually opening locations in the capitals of all of China’s provinces. UBurger serves signature burgers that are topped with a variety of fresh produce and sauces in its fast-casual food chain locations. The addition of and attention to this produce and these sauces creates separation from traditional fast...

...Open-Sourcing Self-Organizing Collaborative Communities Alan Cohen still remembers the first time he heard the word "Apache" as an adult, and it wasn't while watching a cowboys-and-Indians movie. It was the 1990s, the dot-com market was booming, and he was a senior manager for IBM, helping to oversee its emerging e-commerce business. "I had a whole team with me and a budget of about $8 million," Cohen recalled. "We were competing head-to-head with Microsoft, Netscape, Oracle, Sun-all the big boys. And we were 82 playing this very big-stakes game for e-commerce. IBM had a huge sales force selling all this e-commerce software. One day I asked the development director who worked for me, 'Say, Jeff, walk me through the development process for these e-commerce systems. What is the underlying Web server?' And he says to me, It's built on top of Apache.' The first thing I think of is John Wayne. 'What is Apache?' I ask. And he says it is a shareware program for Web server technology. He said it was produced for free by a bunch of geeks just working online in some kind of open-source chat room. I was floored. I said, 'How do you buy it?' And he says, Tou download it off a Web site for free.' And I said, 'Well, who supports it if something goes wrong?' And he says, 'I don't know-it just works!' And that was my first exposure to Apache . . . "Now you have to remember, back then Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Netscape were all trying to build commercial Web servers. These were...

In the end, we are our choices. —Jeff Bezos, commencement speech at Princeton University, May 30, 2010 Prologue In the early 1970s, an industrious advertising executive named Julie Ray became fascinated with an unconventional public-school program for gifted children in Houston, Texas. Her son was among the first students enrolled in what would later be called the Vanguard program, which stoked creativity and independence in its students and nurtured expansive, outside-the-box thinking. Ray grew so enamored with the curriculum and the community of enthusiastic teachers and parents that she set out to research similar schools around the state with an eye toward writing a book about...
